Urban fabric is the key to understanding a city's most essential characteristics. When we speak of Shanghai, our minds often first turn to the architectural exposition of the Bund, the clusters of skyscrapers in Lujiazui, the Jiangnan garden scenery of Yuyuan, and the lilong housing that hides in the shadows of towering buildings. However, these iconic elements are merely the most eye-catching voices in the grand symphony of urban fabric. What truly shapes Shanghai's urban character is those seemingly ordinary yet ubiquitous spatial structural patterns—how waterways cut through the urban area, how streets organize blocks, how buildings enclose space, and how capital flows and gathers. These spatial forms, seemingly static, actually carry centuries or even millennia of accumulated urban development history and continue to exert influence in shaping the city's destiny today.
This chapter, as the starting point for the book's theoretical construction, bears a dual mission. On one hand, we need to establish a conceptual framework that can effectively analyze Shanghai's urban fabric—a framework that not only explains the historical evolution of urban spatial patterns but also reveals the deep structural causes of contemporary urban issues. On the other hand, we must contextualize this theoretical framework within Shanghai's specific context, examining how, through the long journey from the establishment of a town in the Song dynasty, to opening as a treaty port, from concession expansion to contemporary global city construction, Shanghai transformed from an obscure peripheral market town within the Jiangnan water network into a global metropolis controlling the allocation of resources worldwide. This process was by no means simple linear growth but rather a complex dynamic interwoven with spatial games, institutional changes, and technological revolutions.
1.1 The Theoretical Lineage of Urban Morphology and the Fabric Concept
As an academic concept, urban fabric has its theoretical roots deeply planted in the European urban research tradition. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with the urbanization wave brought by industrialization, European architects and urban planners began systematically studying the historical evolution of urban spatial forms. The earliest systematic research can be traced back to Italian architect Camillo Sitte, who in his 1889 publication "Der Städtebau nach seinen künstlerischen Grundsätzen" (City Planning According to Artistic Principles), first systematically analyzed the spatial aesthetic principles of European medieval cities, revealing the organic relationships among plazas, streets, and building clusters. Although Sitte's research primarily focused on aesthetic dimensions, his pioneering view of urban space as a coherent whole with inherent logic established a methodological foundation for subsequent fabric studies.
German geographer Konrad von Engen further developed this tradition in his 1903 work, being the first to employ the term "Stadthaut" (literally "city skin") and understanding urban fabric as the dialectical relationship between built mass and open space within urban areas. Engen argued that urban fabric is not simply an accumulation of buildings but an organic whole where buildings, plots, streets, and open spaces are organized according to specific principles. Through his research on dozens of German cities, Engen identified different fabric types—such as the dense medieval fabric, the regular Renaissance fabric, and the mixed fabric of the industrial era—and revealed the intrinsic connections between these fabric types and urban socio-economic development. Engen's work provided important analytical tools for subsequent comparative urban morphology research.
Scholars in British architecture and urban planning inherited the European continental theoretical legacy and developed it into a more systematic academic framework. Michael Conzens and Peter Cosgrove, among others, proposed the discipline of Urban Morphology in the mid-20th century, elevating urban fabric studies from scattered urban design observations to an independent discipline with distinct methodological characteristics. In his groundbreaking 1964 paper, Conzens proposed three basic elements for analyzing urban fabric: street systems, plot patterns, and building fabric. This three-element analytical framework remains the foundational paradigm in urban morphology research and has been widely applied in urban historical studies across various countries.
1.1.2 Space Syntax: Methodological Innovation in Quantitative Fabric Analysis
In the 1980s, Space Syntax theory pioneered by Bill Hillier and Julienne Hanson at University College London brought revolutionary methodological innovation to urban fabric research. Space Syntax is not merely a simple spatial description tool but a complete analytical theory and methodology system, with its core assumption being: spatial structure itself carries profound social logic, and the spatial configuration patterns of urban fabric directly influence the possibilities for social interaction, material circulation, and information dissemination.
The fundamental analytical method of Space Syntax involves abstracting urban space into a network graph composed of nodes and connections, then calculating various spatial integration indices to measure the accessibility and centrality of different spatial units within the entire system. High-integration spatial nodes typically correspond to the busiest streets, most active commercial districts, and locations where social interactions most densely occur. Through empirical research on numerous urban cases, Hillier discovered an important pattern: the spatial structure of urban fabric is not randomly formed but follows principles distinguishing between "natural movement" and "forced movement." The convenience demands of daily life guide people to choose the shortest paths through urban space. The cumulative effect of such "natural
