> What is Positive Discipline? — A New Parenting Philosophy
> It's 11 PM. Duoduo, four and a half, has finally stopped crying. She leans against your shoulder, still holding the picture book with one page torn out. You sit on the edge of the toddler bed, staring at the small scissors in the corner—the same pair you used half an hour ago to threaten her: "If you keep acting up, Mommy will throw away your favorite doll."
> You didn't throw the doll. But you said it. That sentence is a thorn in your heart, impossible to remove. In that moment, a thought struck you—Am I really teaching her? Or am I teaching her to fear me?
> This is the first question of this book, and one that almost every parent who has broken down at night has asked themselves. When a child throws tantrums, hits, grabs toys, refuses to eat, refuses to sleep—besides yelling, threatening, punishing, and giving in, is there really a third path?
> The answer is yes. It's called Positive Discipline.

> A Real Turning Point: From Punishment to Breakdown, to a Different Night
> Let me start with a real story. The protagonist is a friend of mine's older sister; let's call her Lin Jie for now.
> Lin Jie has a seven-year-old son named Xiaohai, in first grade. One day last year, after Xiaohai didn't do homework for three days straight, got complaints from the teacher, and zoned out in class, Lin Jie finally snapped. She pushed Xiaohai to his desk and ordered: "No sleeping until you finish tonight." Xiaohai cried as he wrote, kept going until 11 PM, and eventually fell asleep on the desk. Lin Jie shook him awake: "No sleeping! Until it's done!"
> That night, Xiaohai finished his homework, but also said something Lin Jie has never forgotten: "Mama, I hate you. When I grow up, I won't do homework either, just to show you."
> Lin Jie was stunned. She suddenly realized that over three nights of "winning" the war, she had lost her child's heart. From that day on, she began reading parenting books voraciously, attended parenting classes, picked up Jane Nelsen's *Positive Discipline*, then read the original works of Alfred Adler and Rudolf Dreikurs. She became a different person.
> Three months later, she told me: "Last week Xiaohai refused to do homework again. I didn't yell, didn't force him. I squatted down and asked: 'Is there something in the homework you don't understand?' He was stunned for a while, then said: 'Mama, I didn't learn the pinyin today.' We worked on pinyin together for twenty minutes, and then he voluntarily finished his homework."
> Do you see the difference?
> The first night, Lin Jie used punishment to get the surface-level result of "homework finished"—at the cost of her child saying "I hate you."
> The second night, she used understanding to get two results—"identifying what he didn't understand" and "the child voluntarily finishing"—and the child felt "Mom and I are on the same team."
> This is the simplest, most core belief of Positive Discipline— > A child's behavioral problem is usually not an attitude problem, but a capability problem; not hostility, but a signal for help.
> Lin Jie later said something to me that I wrote on the first page of my notebook:
> "It took me seven years to turn myself into my child's enemy, and three months to turn myself back into her mom."
> If reading this made your heart ache a little, or if you remembered some night after you yelled at your child—welcome to this book.
---
> What Exactly Is Positive Discipline? — A Name Misunderstood for Thirty Years
> Before answering this, we must do one thing: rescue the four Chinese characters "正面管教" from their linguistic ambiguity.
> Many parents, upon first hearing "Positive Discipline," picture:
(Positive = only seeing the child's strengths, spoiling?)
(Discipline = still need to manage, set rules.)
(No punishment? Won't the child run wild?)
> These reactions are completely normal, because combining the Chinese words "正面" (positive) and "管教" (discipline) does easily lead to misunderstanding. But when we go back to the English "Positive Discipline," the meaning becomes clear:
- **Positive Discipline**:
> - Positive: constructive, solution-focused, rather than negative, destructive, punishment-focused. > - Discipline: training, cultivating, self-regulation—not punishment. > - Positive Discipline: training children to develop self-discipline and cooperation in constructive ways.
> The official definition of Positive Discipline (Jane Nelsen, 1981) is this:
> "Positive Discipline is a parenting approach that is neither punitive nor permissive. It is kind and firm at the same time. It focuses on teaching long-term life skills while addressing the immediate behavior problem."
> Please read this sentence three times, because it overturns the binary thinking that most parents hold at their core—
> We assume parenting has only two paths: either strict (punishment) or lenient (permissiveness).
> Positive Discipline tells us there is a third path: kind and firm simultaneously.

> Origins: From Adler to Dreikurs, to Nelsen's Synthesis
> No mature parenting system is born out of thin air, and Positive Discipline is no exception. Its intellectual roots trace back to early 20th-century Vienna, then crossed the Atlantic, finally taking root in 1980s America.
(Alfred Adler, 1870–1937)
> 3.1 Adler: The Father of Individual Psychology
> Alfred Adler was an Austrian psychiatrist, as famous as Freud, but with very different views. In 1912, he proposed Individual Psychology, with four core ideas:
> 1. Behavior is purposeful. A child doesn't act rand
