Chapter 1: The Starting Point of Scientific Inquiry — Method, Thinking, and Ethics
What is science? This seemingly simple question has puzzled humanity for millennia. From ancient Greek natural philosophy to modern quantum physics, from the dreams of alchemy to Darwin's theory of evolution, the pursuit of "reliable knowledge" has never ceased. What truly systematized and made this pursuit reliable is a set of inquiry procedures known as the Scientific Method. This chapter will answer three fundamental questions: How do scientists ask questions worth pursuing? How do they design experiments that can answer those questions? And in the process of seeking knowledge, what底线 are inviolable?

The Six Core Steps of the Scientific Method and Their Logical Relationships
The scientific method is not a flash of inspiration from some genius, but a "thinking operating system" distilled over centuries by countless scientists through trial and error. It can be simplified into six interlocking steps: Observation, Question, Hypothesis, Experiment, Analysis, and Conclusion. However, these six steps are not a one-way assembly line, but a spiral that can be repeated—each cycle pushes human understanding to deeper levels.

The first step: Observation Science begins with observation. "Observation" here is not merely "seeing with the eyes," but mobilizing all senses and tools to perceive natural phenomena. Galileo Galilei (1564–1642) improved the telescope to observe the four satellites of Jupiter, providing key evidence for heliocentrism; Louis Pasteur (1822–1895) observed microbial activity through microscopes, establishing the germ theory of disease. The key to observation is "faithful recording"—what you observe is what it is, without being filtered by personal preferences or existing theories.
The second step: Question After observation, one must ask a testable question. A good question should meet two conditions: first, it should be answerable by empirical evidence, not pure conceptual games (for example, questions like "Does the universe have a purpose?" are difficult to handle within the scientific framework); second, it should be specific and bounded, such as "Why do heavy and light objects fall at the same speed in a vacuum?" rather than the vague "Why do objects fall?"
The third step: Hypothesis A hypothesis is a provisional answer to a question, and it must possess two characteristics: falsifiability and testability. Falsifiability means that there must be some possible observation that could overturn this hypothesis. For example, "All swans are white" is a falsifiable hypothesis, because finding even one black swan would overturn it. On the other hand, "My cat is the most beautiful cat" may be true, but it cannot be objectively falsified, so it is not a scientific hypothesis. Testability requires that the hypothesis can be verified through some operable procedure.
The fourth step: Experiment An experiment is the "court" that tests hypotheses. A well-designed experiment must be able to produce clear evidence that supports or opposes the hypothesis. This requires the experimenter to precisely control various variables—which factors need to remain unchanged (controlled variables), which factors need to be actively changed (independent variable), and which factors are the targets of measurement (dependent variable). We will discuss the principles of experimental design in detail in Section 1.2.
The fifth step: Analysis The collected data needs to be systematically organized and statistically analyzed. The core tasks of analysis include: drawing charts to reveal trends, calculating averages to reduce random errors, and applying statistical tests to determine whether differences are significant. At this stage, scientists must maintain high honesty—data cannot be casually discarded because it is "not as expected," and all raw data must be faithfully recorded.
The sixth step: Conclusion A conclusion is a summary of the entire inquiry process. A good conclusion should clearly state: Was the hypothesis supported? Are the experimental results trustworthy? What unanswered questions remain? A rigorous conclusion would never claim to "have proved" something, but would rather say it "supports" or "has not overturned" a hypothesis. This cautious attitude is precisely where the honesty of science lies.
Classic Case One: Galileo's Inclined Plane Experiment
Aristotle (384–322 BCE) proposed over two thousand years ago: Heavier objects fall faster than lighter objects. This view seems intuitive and therefore dominated Western thought for two millennia. It was not until Galileo challenged this authority in the early 17th century through clever thought experiments and inclined plane experiments.
Galileo's reasoning was as follows: Suppose there is a heavy object A and a light object B. According to Aristotle, A should fall faster than B. Now tie A and B together to form a heavier object C. On one hand, C is heavier than A, so it should fall faster than A; on the other hand, C actually contains a "dragger" B that falls slower, so its speed should be between A and B—slower than A. These two inferences contradict each other, indicating that Aristotle's hypothesis has a logical loophole.
But Galileo did not stop at the thought experiment. He further designed the inclined plane experiment—by letting copper balls roll down a smooth inclined plane, he cleverly "slowed down" the falling process so it could be precisely timed. He found that when the angle of the incline was
