Welcome to the World of Sound
Have you ever noticed what the first sound is when you wake up in the morning? It might be your alarm clock ringing, or the chirping of birds outside your window, or the sounds of your mom or dad making breakfast in the kitchen. These sounds are like magical companions, quietly accompanying us through each day. In this chapter, we will embark on a wonderful adventure into the world of sound, learning to listen to and experience this colorful sound world in entirely new ways.
Close Your Eyes and Hear a Different World
Let's start with a small experiment. Find a comfortable spot to sit down, close your eyes, and place your hands on your knees. Now, take a deep breath and start listening carefully to the sounds around you. Don't open your eyes—just use your ears to sense everything.
What sounds can you hear? Perhaps the hum of an air conditioner or fan, the distant honking of cars on the road, the footsteps of family members walking by, or even the sound of your own breathing. When you close your eyes, do you notice that sounds you normally ignore suddenly become much clearer?
This simple exercise reveals an important secret: our ears are receiving sounds every single moment, but our eyes and brains tend to distract us, causing us to miss many wonderful sound details. Like a dutiful sentinel, our ears never rest—even while we sleep, they continue working. That's why sometimes a sleeping baby might wake up from a slight sound.
Let's do a more in-depth exercise this time. When you close your eyes again, try to distinguish how many different sounds you can hear. Keep track of them in your mind: from the loudest sound to the faintest, from the nearest sound to the farthest. Can you hear at least five different sounds?
Sound is everywhere, surrounding us like air, yet it's often overlooked. In the following content, we will explore the mysteries of sound together and learn how to listen and create like a sound designer.
How Sound is Created
When you strike a drum, the drumhead vibrates; when you pluck a guitar string, the string vibrates; when you speak, your vocal cords vibrate. So what exactly is vibration?
Imagine holding one end of a jump rope while a friend holds the other. If you wave your wrist up and down, the rope forms waves—high and low alternately. These waves are vibrations. Vibration is when an object moves back and forth rapidly, transferring energy to the air around it and creating sound waves that spread outward in circles.
Sound waves are invisible and intangible, but like ripples in water, they travel from where the sound originates all the way to your ears. When sound waves reach your ears, they make your eardrum vibrate, and then your brain interprets these vibrations as all kinds of different sounds. That's how you hear things!
Let's do another fun experiment. Find an empty plastic bottle, remove the cap, and shout "Ah—" into the bottle's opening. What do you hear? The bottle produces a low humming sound because your voice causes the air inside the bottle to vibrate as well.
If you add some water to the bottle and shout into it again, you'll notice the sound changes—usually becoming higher. This is because the amount of air in the bottle changes the frequency of vibration, and frequency determines the pitch of a sound. If you add more water, there's less air space, so the sound becomes higher; if there's less water, the sound becomes lower.
The three basic elements of sound are: volume, pitch, and timbre.
Volume: Refers to how loud or soft a sound is. Volume depends on the amplitude of the sound wave—the extent of its up-and-down fluctuation. Larger amplitude means louder sound; smaller amplitude means quieter sound. You can change volume by adjusting how forcefully you speak—speaking loudly increases amplitude and makes the sound louder; speaking softly decreases amplitude and makes the sound quieter.
Pitch: Refers to how high or low a sound is. Pitch is determined by the frequency of the sound wave—the more vibrations per second, the higher the frequency and the higher the sound; fewer vibrations mean lower frequency and lower sound. For example, a violin typically has a higher pitch than a cello because the violin's strings vibrate faster. You can use this principle to make a simple water glass instrument: fill several glasses with different amounts of water, from less to more, and tap them—you'll hear different pitches from high to low.
Timbre: Also called tone color or quality, it refers to the characteristic or texture of a sound. Even if two sounds have exactly the same volume and pitch, you can still distinguish between them—for example, when a piano and violin play the same note, you can never mistake one for the other. That's the work of timbre. Timbre is determined by the waveform of the sound wave. Different sound-producing objects create different shaped waveforms. Even with the same pitch, different waveforms mean different timbres. That's why you can tell apart different instruments and different people's voices.
Hidden Sound Treasures in Everyday Life
Hidden in every corner of our daily lives are countless sound treasures. Sound researchers collectively call these sounds ambient sound or soundscape. The word "soundscape" combines "sound" and "landscape"—it refers to all the sounds in a particular environment, like a "landscape" made up of various sounds.
Let's take a sound journey around the world, starting from early morning.
Morning Kitchen
While you're still dreaming, the kitchen is already beginning its symphony of sounds. The refrigerator hums with a low drone as the compressor works. Turn on the faucet and water rushes out with a whooshing sound. Light the gas stove and the flames crackle and pop. When frying an egg, the oil sizzles in the pan, and when the egg first touches the hot oil, there's a crisp sizzling sound. The toaster
