Have you ever imagined a grassland even vaster than the ocean, where the sky is as blue as a freshly washed canvas and white clouds float by like cotton candy? In that land, there are no tall buildings or cars, only countless Mongolian tents called yurts, and herds of sheep, horses, and cattle running around. This is the Mongolian grasslands—a magical place bigger than any playground you could ever imagine!
On this vast grassland, about 850 years ago, a great story began to unfold. The main character of this story was once just an ordinary shepherd boy, no different from the kids around you—he helped his parents herd sheep, rode horses across the grasslands, and sometimes cried when he couldn't get the tasty meat he wanted. But this ordinary boy later became the Great Khan who ruled the largest empire in the world. His name was—Genghis Khan!

Now, you must know your class monitor, right? The class monitor is the student chosen by the teacher to help manage the class. They're responsible for collecting homework, maintaining discipline, and passing messages from the teacher. A good class monitor remembers every classmate's name, knows where everyone sits, and who is on duty today.
Genghis Khan's title of "Great Khan" is like being a super, super class monitor! But instead of managing a class of a few dozen people, he ruled an empire of millions.
Imagine if you had to manage your entire school—not just your class, but the whole school! From first to sixth grade, from classrooms to the playground, from the cafeteria to the library, everything would be your responsibility. You'd need to know how many students are in each grade, what every teacher's name is, and where each classroom is. Something happens every day: a first-grader fell down, the third grade has a performance, the fifth grade's water fountain broke... You need to know these things quickly to handle them in time.
Ruling an empire is a hundred times, a thousand times harder than managing a school! Empires have many different cities, different peoples, and different languages. The Great Khan was like a super administrator—he had to make everyone obey, keep everyone safe, and make the entire empire run smoothly.

Let's hop into a time machine and travel back to the Mongolian grasslands in 1162 AD. The grasslands were probably similar to today—the sky was still blue, the sheep herds were still everywhere, but there was no electricity, no internet, no cell phones.
In a corner of the grassland, there was a small yurt (a round tent made of felt, warm and easy to move). Inside the yurt, a little boy had just been born! His name was Temüjin—that was the childhood name of Genghis Khan.
The night Temüjin was born, a very bright meteor streaked across the sky, leaving a long trail of light. In grassland legends, a falling star meant a great person would be born. So everyone was happy, believing this boy would certainly accomplish great things in the future.
Little Temüjin grew up slowly. He learned to ride horses—not like sitting in a school bus, riding horses is very difficult! You have to grip the horse's belly with your legs, hold onto the mane (the long hair on a horse's neck), so you don't get bounced off. Grassland children usually start learning to ride at five or six, and young Temüjin was no exception.
Little Temüjin also helped his father herd sheep. The grassland sheep herds were enormous, stretching far beyond where the eye could see. Young Temüjin had to use a whip to drive scattered sheep back into the flock and watch out for wolves. Grassland wolves were clever—they would sneak close to the sheep when you weren't looking.
But when Temüjin was just nine years old, his father was poisoned by a rival tribe. Nine years old! You might be nine or close to nine right now. At nine, you should be in school, watching cartoons and playing games after class. But young Temüjin lost his father, and his life changed completely.
Temüjin's mother took him and his brothers away from their tribe. They had no nice yurts to live in and few sheep to follow. They wandered across the grasslands, surviving on wild vegetables, caught mice, and fish. Sometimes they went days without eating. Young Temüjin's stomach growled from hunger.
When troubles come, they never come singly. When Temüjin was ten, something even worse happened. A rival tribe came to capture people and took Temüjin too! He was put in wooden stocks (like the ones prisoners wear in cartoons) and passed from one tribe to another.
Young Temüjin was made a slave. In ancient times, slaves had no freedom and had to do very hard work—carrying things, chopping wood, drawing water. Temüjin worked until his face was covered with sweat every day. He slept on the cold ground at night and sometimes didn't get enough to eat.
But young Temüjin never gave up. A small flame burned in his heart—he wanted to become strong, he wanted to give his family a better life. That flame was hope, it was faith.
One night, Temüjin escaped while the guards were asleep. He ran and ran, through the dark grassland, evaded pursuers, and finally made it back to his mother. Temüjin later recalled that when he escaped, even the stars and moon helped him—their light illuminated his path to freedom.

Now, let's shift our attention from Temüjin and look at where he grew up—Mongolia. Where exactly is Mongolia on Earth?
If you open a world map and look at the Asian continent in the northeast, you'll find an oval-shaped area. That's Mongolia. Mongolia is north of China and south of Russia. It's a completely landlocked country—it has no oceans around it at all.
How big is Mongolia's area? About 1.56 million square kilometers. That number might sound big, but you probably can't picture it. Let me help you calculate—
Beijing's area is about 16,000 squ
