| Why We Need to Talk About "Drawing"
A Frequently Overlooked Truth
Many parents opening this book for the first time may wonder: Drawing? Do we really need a dedicated conversation about it?
My answer is: yes, absolutely. But for reasons you might not expect.
Over the past eight years, I've worked with thousands of families. I've seen parents who treasure their child's drawings on the refrigerator, and I've also seen parents who, when their child proudly hands over a painting, casually say: "What is this?" — and that single sentence often causes an originally eager child to slowly put down their brush.
The children raised in these two types of families will have vastly different attitudes toward "drawing" as they grow up.
Drawing is a comprehensive way for children to understand the world, express themselves, develop fine motor skills, and nurture creative thinking. It is not an isolated "art class" but a key embedded within the overall growth of a child.
Unfortunately, many functions of this key remain unseen by parents.
Drawing: The "Holographic Projection" of a Child's Comprehensive Abilities
What is a holographic projection? Think of it as a photograph that contains an entire three-dimensional world — every fragment holds information about the whole.
A child's drawing is exactly such a "holographic photograph."
From a cognitive development perspective, when a child draws a tree, they aren't merely "copying" a tree; they are constructing their own understanding of "what a tree is." A 3-year-old's tree might be a green ball atop a stick — because that's how simple and lovely their cognition of a tree is. A 5-year-old's tree will show layers: trunk, canopy, leaves — their cognition has become more refined, capable of handling "the relationship between whole and parts." By age 8 or 9, children begin to depict bark texture, light and shadow, seasonal change — they are starting to focus on "details" and "realism."
This process is a complete thinking chain of observation, induction, abstraction, and expression for the child.
From an emotional expression perspective, a child may not be able to say "I got criticized by the teacher today, I feel sad," but they might draw a rainy scene, with blue and gray filling the entire paper, no sun, no smiling face — this is how they "speak" using color and imagery.
Research in child psychology has found that drawing is one of the most natural channels for children's emotional expression. Toddlers whose language skills are still developing instinctively "externalize" their inner world through the brush.
From a motor development perspective, holding a brush, controlling strokes, coloring, cutting paper, pasting — these seemingly simple activities require children to engage their small hand muscles, eye tracking, and left-right brain coordination. This is the golden training ground for fine motor development in children aged 3-6.
From a creative thinking perspective, drawing may be the only activity where children don't need a "correct answer." One plus one equals two — that's math. But "draw a tree" can have a thousand answers. Every stroke is an act of "original creation."
These four dimensions — cognition, emotion, motor skills, and creativity — are not isolated; they occur simultaneously and intertwine with every dab and stroke.
So when we say "let children draw," we are really saying: let children have a window of their own.

Xiaomi's Story: 180 Days from Resistance to Love
With all this theory, let's step into a real family.
The Girl Who Said "I Can't Draw"
Xiaomi was a 4-year-and-2-month-old girl. When she first came to see me, her mother arrived with a puzzled look: "Xiaomi strongly resists drawing. Every time we ask her to draw, she just says 'I can't' and runs off to do something else. We don't know why."
I asked the mother to describe the specific scenario when Xiaomi drew at home. After thinking, she said:
> "Every time I take out the drawing tools, she hides. When I say 'Come, Mommy will draw with you,' she resists even more. I've tried many methods — showing her videos, buying her beautiful brushes, changing the paper to her favorite colors — none of them worked."
I then asked a key question: "When Xiaomi shows you her drawing, what do you usually say?"
The mother was stunned: "I... I would say 'What is this?' or 'Why doesn't it look like it?' I just wanted her to explain more clearly..."
I smiled. This mother didn't realize she had unknowingly closed the window that Xiaomi was willing to open — again and again.
The Day the Turning Point Happened
I said to Xiaomi's mother: "Next time Xiaomi shows you something she has drawn, please first say 'Wow, Mommy sees it,' and then ask her 'Can you tell me the story inside this?' — don't ask 'What is this,' and definitely don't ask 'Does it look like it?' Try this for one week and see what happens."
The mother agreed with half belief.
Three days later, the mother sent me a voice message. In it, her voice was trembling and excited:
> "Teacher! Teacher! Today Xiaomi drew a picture — it was a big paper with many circles in various colors. She brought it to me on her own. I squatted down as you said, said 'Wow, Mommy sees it,' and then asked 'Can you tell me the story inside this?'"
The mother continued: "Xiaomi was stunned for a moment, then got very excited and pointed at each circle, telling me one by one: 'This is Mommy, this is Daddy, this is me, this is Grandma, this is our little dog, this is the sun...' As she spoke and laughed, I suddenly realized — she was actually drawing a 'family portrait'!"
By this point, the mother was almost in tears: "Before, I kept asking her 'What is this you drew?' She felt I couldn't understand, so she didn't want to draw anymore. Today she discove
