Historical Background and Academic Framework of the Age of Discovery

The contemporary historiographical concept of the "Age of Discovery" is fundamentally a product of nineteenth-century Eurocentric scholarly traditions. When Portuguese historian Silvestre Firmiano first systematically employed this term in 1834, its narrative logic presupposed the uniqueness and historical progressive significance of European exploration activities. This nomenclature has profoundly shaped the fundamental paradigms of global historical writing over the subsequent century and a half, until the postcolonial historiography and Global History movement of the late twentieth century fundamentally challenged these premises. Rather than perpetuating this value-laden nomenclature, this book attempts to examine, within a more neutral framework of the "Maritime Age" or "Era of Maritime Expansion," the technological innovations, institutional transformations, and reconfigurations of political-economic orders characterizing maritime activities worldwide from the fifteenth to seventeenth centuries.

Defining Temporal Boundaries and Spatial Categories
Regarding the temporal starting point of the Age of Discovery, scholarly consensus is relatively robust. The 1405 first voyage of Zheng He and the 1415 Portuguese conquest of Ceuta are typically regarded as the prolegomena of this era. Regarding the temporal endpoint, however, significant divergences exist among scholars. Traditional perspectives favor 1600 or 1650 as the terminal markers, emphasizing the 1602 loss of Portuguese maritime supremacy in Goa, the rise of the Dutch East India Company (VOC), and the expansion of English colonial activities in North America as markers of this transformation. More recent revisionist perspectives extend the endpoint to 1700 or even 1800, arguing that globalization processes of the early modern world constitute a longue durée evolutionary process whose influences extended into the eve of the Industrial Revolution.
This book adopts a more elastic approach to periodization. Under this framework, the Age of Discovery can be understood as a continuous process spanning approximately two and a half centuries, with approximately 1400 to 1650 constituting its core period, characterized by the maturation of long-distance maritime technology, the preliminary formation of global trade networks, and the institutionalized construction of European colonial empires. The period approximately 1650 to 1800 may be designated as the "Post-Discovery Era," characterized by the mature operation of colonial empires, the institutionalization of the Atlantic slave trade, and the reshuffling of Asian maritime trade configurations. This book's core analysis will focus on the 1400-1650 core period, though it will appropriately extend into the subsequent phase when necessary to present the complete trajectory of historical evolution.
The spatial scope of the Age of Discovery equally requires careful delineation. The traditional Eurocentric narrative depicts the spatial contours of this period as a unidirectional radiation outward from Europe (particularly the Iberian Peninsula): the Portuguese sailing southward along the African coast, rounding the Cape of Good Hope, and entering the Indian Ocean; the Spanish crossing the Atlantic, discovering the Americas, and subsequently traversing the Pacific to complete circumnavigation. However, this Europe-centered, ocean-as-medium narrative framework severely obscures the activeness of Asian, African, and even American indigenous maritime activities during the same period and their contributions to global trade networks.
This book adopts a spatial framework emphasizing multi-centrality and network interconnectivity. Under this framework, the spatial structure of the Age of Discovery can be conceptualized as three overlapping maritime worlds:
1. Mediterranean-Atlantic Complex: Encompassing the European coastal regions from the Strait of Gibraltar to the British Isles, and later extending to the West African coast and the Caribbean Sea of the American colonial frontier zones of Portugal and Spain. 2. Indian Ocean World-System: Encompassing the vast seas from the East African coast (Swahili Coast) through the Arabian Peninsula, the Indian subcontinent, and Southeast Asian archipelagoes to the South China Sea, the busiest trans-regional trade network of the pre-modern world. 3. Western Pacific-East Asian Maritime Circle: Encompassing coastal and oceanic trade routes of the Chinese Sea, Japanese Sea, Philippine Sea, and Southeast Asian waters, maintaining continuous commodity and cultural exchange with the Indian Ocean world.

Geographic Distribution and Technical Characteristics of Pre-Modern Maritime Activities
The Mediterranean, as the world's oldest continuously navigated maritime region, has a navigational tradition traceable to Phoenician maritime activities of the third millennium BCE. The dead reckoning navigation developed by the Phoenicians—calculating ship position through recording course, speed, and time—constituted the technical foundation for Mediterranean maritime activities over the subsequent millennia. However, it was the Greeks
