Have you ever wondered why, when you sit in front of the TV watching cute cartoon characters running around and playing, those drawings on paper suddenly come to life? Why can a little cat drawn on paper run and jump? How can a bird drawn on a screen fly through the sky? These questions might seem simple, but there's actually magical science behind them! Join us on this exciting journey to discover the secrets of the animation world.
Animation, What Is It Really?
Before we start our adventure, let's meet our main character today—animation. Did you know that the word "Animation" comes from the Latin word "Anima," which means "soul" or "life"? Imagine an animator drawing a cute little dog on one piece of paper, then drawing the dog slightly moved on another paper, then a third, a fourth... When these drawings flash quickly before your eyes, one after another, that little dog on paper seems to come alive! It starts running, jumping, and wagging its tail! This, is the magic of animation!
The animation family is quite big, with many different members. Let me introduce you to the main members of this big family!
Traditional Animation is the oldest member of the animation family. Imagine, hundreds or even dozens of years ago, animators had to draw thousands of transparent celluloid sheets by hand. On each sheet, the character's body and the background were separate—the background stayed the same while the characters could move on different layers. It's like playing with a sticker book where the background is fixed paper and the characters are moveable stickers. By flipping through these sheets quickly, animation is created. Classic Disney animations like "Snow White," "Peter Pan," and "The Lion King" were all made this way. Although computers help now, the warm, human touch of traditional animation still fascinates many people.
Stop Motion Animation is a very interesting form of animation. In this type, creators use real objects to make animations—clay characters like the famous "Wallace and Gromit," paper-cut figures like the Chinese classic "Pigsy Eating Watermelon," or even Lego bricks, stones, food, and all kinds of unexpected things! The process of making stop motion is like taking photos. After taking one photo, you move the character a little bit, then take another photo. Sounds slow, doesn't it? That's right! One second of stop motion might need 24 or more photos, and a 90-minute movie needs over 130,000 photos! That's so much patience! But watching these real objects "come alive" is truly magical!
Computer-Generated Animation (CG Animation) is the most popular form of animation in our era. Many of the characters in games you've played and movies you've watched might have been "drawn" by computers. Pixar is a pioneer in computer animation, and their "Toy Story" was the world's first fully computer-animated feature film. Computer animation can be divided into 3D animation and 2D animation. 3D animation is like building a virtual three-dimensional world in the computer where you can view characters from any angle. 2D animation simulates traditional hand-drawn effects using computers. Many animated films nowadays are 3D, like "Frozen" and "Coco," where characters look so realistic, as if they really exist in that world!
Where Is Animation Around Us?
Animation isn't just in movies and TV—it's actually everywhere! Let's look at some fun applications of animation in daily life.
When you watch weather forecasts, the cute sun, clouds, and raindrops on the screen move with the weather changes—that's animation. When you play video games, characters can run, jump, and attack—that's also animation. When you watch short videos on your phone, cartoon characters make various funny movements—that's still animation. Even when you open a webpage, those moving icons and pop-up ads are all thanks to animation!
In the medical field, doctors use animation to show the internal structure of the human body, helping them better understand conditions. In architecture, architects use animation to show what buildings will look like when completed, letting you "walk through" before the house is built. In scientific research, scientists use animation to simulate various phenomena like weather forecasting, planetary movements, how viruses attack cells, and more. Animation has become an indispensable tool in our lives!
A Journey Through Time: The History of Animation
Now that you've met the magician called "animation," did you know animation didn't just appear today? Let's hop in a time machine and go back to long, long ago to see how animation grew into what it is today!
The Seeds of Animation in Ancient Times (50000 BCE - 1600 CE)
Archaeologists discovered that long, long ago, when humans hadn't invented writing yet, they already understood the secret of drawing. On the walls of the Altamira Cave in Spain, there are cave paintings from around 15000 BCE. Among them, one is quite interesting—it shows a wild bull, but the fun part is that the bull's back and legs have several extra legs painted on them!
What does this mean? It shows that as early as 15000 years ago, humans had noticed an interesting secret: if you draw multiple images of an object in different positions on one picture, when your eyes quickly scan across these images, it creates the illusion of movement! These ancient artists might have been the earliest "animators"!
Let's jump forward to around 1600 CE in Constantinople (now Istanbul), Turkey. A scholar named Hasan al-Nabka invented a clever device called the "Serpent Lamp." The principle was simple: inside the lamp was a rotating tube with small holes. When the candle inside burned, hot air made the tube spin, and the holes turned wit
