The Flow of Qi: Entering the World of Feng Shui
Imagine this scenario: You walk into an ancient building and immediately feel an inexplicable sense of comfort and tranquility. Sunlight falls from a specific angle, a gentle breeze brushes past, and the spatial layout gives you an inexplicable feeling of relaxation and pleasure. You may not realize that this is precisely the realm that Feng Shui seeks to achieve—allowing "Qi" to flow harmoniously through space, thereby influencing the resident's fortune and state of mind.
Feng Shui, this wisdom originating from ancient China, has a history of over three thousand years. It is not merely an esoteric theory but a profound philosophy about how humans and the environment can coexist harmoniously. From emperors' palaces to ordinary people's homes, from urban planning to office layouts, the wisdom of Feng Shui permeates every corner of Chinese culture.
In this chapter, we will embark together on a journey of exploring Feng Shui. We will trace its historical origins, understand its philosophical foundations, explore the deep meaning of "Qi," the core concept, and through two classic cases—the Forbidden City and Huizhou architecture—experience the exquisite application of Feng Shui wisdom in reality. More importantly, we will establish the correct attitude and methods for learning, laying a solid foundation for further in-depth study of Feng Shui.

The Origins of Feng Shui: From Imperial Use to Folk Wisdom
What is Feng Shui?
Before we delve deeper, we need to first answer a fundamental question: What is Feng Shui?
The term "Feng Shui" (风水) first appeared in the classic "Book of Burial" (《葬经》) written by Guo Pu during the Jin Dynasty: "Where Qi meets wind, it scatters; where it meets water, it stops. The ancients gathered it so it would not scatter, and directed it so it would have a destination—this is why it is called Feng Shui." This passage succinctly and profoundly reveals the core essence of Feng Shui: Feng Shui studies precisely the relationship between "Qi" and "wind" and "water"—how to gather beneficial Qi so it does not scatter, and how to guide its flow to benefit the residents.
在英文中,Feng Shui 通常被翻译为 "Wind and Water" 或 "the art of placement",后者更能传达风水学作为一门空间布局艺术的本质。
Lliterally, "wind" represents the movement of airflow, and "water" represents the gathering and dwelling of airflow. The core objective of Feng Shui is to create a favorable Qi field environment for human habitation and life by observing and adjusting the relationship between buildings and their environment. In English, Feng Shui is usually translated as "Wind and Water" or "the art of placement"—the latter better conveys the essence of Feng Shui as a spatial arrangement art.
A Wisdom Crystal with Three Thousand Years of History
The history of Feng Shui can be traced back to ancient times. According to archaeological discoveries, as early as the Neolithic Age, our ancestors had already begun to pay attention to the selection of living environments. They lived by water and chose terrain with mountains behind and water in front—these behaviors already contained simple Feng Shui ideas.
Four Important Developmental Stages
The development of Feng Shui experienced four important stages:
First Stage: Pre-Qin Period—The Germination of Feng Shui Thought
During the Pre-Qin period, Feng Shui thought mainly appeared in the form of "Xiangdi" (site selection). In the "Book of Documents," it is recorded that when the Duke of Zhou built Luoyi, he examined the terrain and selected auspicious land. In the "Book of Songs," there is also a description of Gong Liu "examining the yin and yang, observing the flowing springs." These records indicate that people during the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods already possessed a certain awareness of environmental selection.
Architecture activities during this period already showed conscious or unconscious adherence to Feng Shui principles. The Banpo site in Xi'an, Shaanxi, shows that when our ancestors selected residential sites, they tended to choose locations facing south with shelter from wind and ample sunlight—this is the prototype of the later Feng Shui principle of "gathering wind and storing Qi to obtain water." The Banpo site is located on a river terrace, which can both avoid flooding and facilitate water access, while a northern earthen slope can block winter's cold winds and the open southern aspect provides ample sunlight—these characteristics highly coincide with ideal Feng Shui patterns.
Second Stage: Qin-Han to Wei-Jin Periods—The Prototype of Theoretical System
The Qin and Han periods were critical periods for Feng Shui development. During this time, the theory of Yin-Yang and the Five Elements was systematically developed and combined with Feng Shui theory. The "Huainanzi" from the Western Han period systematically expounded the ideas of Yin-Yang, four seasons, and the correspondence between heaven and humanity, providing an important theoretical foundation for Feng Shui.
During the Eastern Han period, Confucian master Zheng Xuan, when annotating the "Rites of Zhou," mentioned: "Optimal timing, favorable geography, and human harmony—these three together are called, and then great deeds can be accomplished." This thought profoundly influenced the later Feng Shui core idea of emphasizing harmony and unity between heaven, earth, and humanity.
Guo Pu during the Wei-Jin period is universally acknowledged as the founder of Feng Shui. His "Book of Burial" is revered by later generations as the foundational work of Feng Shui, and his discourse on "Qi" became the core of later Feng Shui theory. Guo Pu was not only a theorist but also a practitioner. According to the "Book of Jin," his travels spanned the great rivers and mountains of China, and he selected sites for countless people. The integration of his theory and practice laid the foundation for the development of Feng Shui in later generations.
Third Stage: Tang-Song Periods—The Prosperity and Differentiation of Feng Shui
The Tang and Song periods were an era when Feng Shui truly flourished. During this period, Feng Shui gradually divided into two major schools: the Form School (Xingshi) and the Compass School (Liqi).
The Form School, also known as the Luan Tou School, focuses on observ
