The winter of 1299 in Anatolia saw harsh winds carrying the grit of the Anatolian plateau, sweeping past the cluster of Turkic yurts on the outskirts of Bursa. The crescent and star flag fluttered fiercely atop its pole, and Osman, in his early thirties, stood at the entrance of his tent, his fingers tracing the curve of the scimitar at his waist. Three days prior, he had been elected leader of his tribe by the council of elders, and now as he stared toward the Byzantine Empire’s border to the southwest, his gaze held none of the hesitation of a newly appointed chief, only the calm focus of a wolf eyeing its prey. No one could have imagined that this small Turkic tribe, scraping a living in the border cracks, would span Europe, Asia and Africa over the next three centuries, planting its crescent flag as far as the walls of Vienna and the coast of Yemen. And the beginning of it all traces back to the cataclysm that had swept the Islamic world forty years earlier.
In 1258, the Mongol army sacked Baghdad, the last Abbasid caliph was trampled to death wrapped in a carpet, and this 500-year-old center of the Islamic world was reduced to rubble in an instant. When the news reached Anatolia, the Seljuk Sultanate of Rum, which had ruled the region for nearly two centuries, instantly collapsed: the Mongols not only destroyed the Seljuk central government, but also incorporated all of Anatolia into the territory of the Ilkhanate, forcing all Turkic tribes either to submit to the Mongols or flee westward to the borderlands of the Byzantine Empire. Osman’s father, Ertuğrul, had originally been a tribal leader under the Seljuk sultan Suleiman Shah. After Suleiman Shah died in battle, he led a tribe of around 3,000 people on a westward migration, finally settling in the Söğüt region of the Byzantine Empire, making a living as mercenaries for the Byzantines and raiding border villages.
At that time, Osman was only eight years old. He went hunting with his father in the border valleys, herded sheep and wrestled with the children of Byzantine border shepherds, and quickly learned the language and customs of the Byzantines. His father often told him: “Our ancestors came from the Central Asian steppe. Wolves of the steppe do not stay in the same place for too long, but if we want to gain a foothold, we have to learn to farm and build cities like the Byzantines, instead of being wandering mercenaries forever.” Osman kept this sentence in his mind for his whole life, and it became the core idea of his later tribal system reform.
The end of the 13th century saw Anatolia as a typical “power vacuum”: the Seljuk central government was already a mere shell, the Ilkhanate’s rule was mainly concentrated in the Iranian plateau and eastern Anatolia, with extremely weak control over western Anatolia; to the west, the Byzantine Empire was mired in continuous civil war: after the death of Byzantine emperor Michael VIII in 1282, his son Andronikos II cut military spending drastically, even disbanding most of the border garrisons and the Aegean fleet to save money. To protect themselves, border nobles formed alliances with surrounding Turkic tribes, even allowing them to settle and collect taxes in their own territories, in exchange for the Turks helping them attack political rivals. This chaotic situation provided a perfect opportunity for Osman’s rise.
In 1281, Ertuğrul died in a battle against a hostile tribe, fought alongside Byzantine troops. Osman, as the eldest son, inherited the position of leader, but immediately faced an internal challenge: his uncle Kara Tohan was a veteran of the tribe with many military achievements, and had long wanted to be the leader. He united one-third of the tribe’s supporters, demanding that the tribe’s territory be split, otherwise he would leave with his own people. Osman did not choose to fight his uncle head-on. Instead, he first went to the tribe’s council of elders, promising that as long as they supported him, all the spoils of war from attacking Byzantine border villages would be distributed by the elders themselves. At the same time, he sent ten Turkic fine horses and five jars of highland honey to the Byzantine border noble John Komnenos, asking John to recognize his leadership and send troops to help him quell the unrest.
John Komnenos was at the time fighting political enemies in the Byzantine court, and was worried about not having enough troops. Upon seeing the gifts and the request for an alliance from Osman, he immediately agreed, not only sending 50 elite cavalry to help Osman quell the rebellion, but also betrothing his daughter Holophira to Osman. The civil unrest lasted only three months. Seeing that the situation was against him, Kara Tohan left the Söğüt region with his supporters and joined another nearby Turkic tribe. Osman not only consolidated his position as leader, but also became a nominal ally of John Komnenos through the marriage, obtaining a “legal authorization” to expand in the Byzantine borderlands.
This marriage was far more important to Osman than the 50 cavalry and a piece of land. Although Holophira was a Byzantine noble, she grew up on the border and was familiar with both Turkic and Byzantine cultures. Later she became Osman’s most capable diplomatic assistant, helping him deal with other Byzantine nobles. As a Byzantine vassal noble, John Komnenos had his own territory and private army. He provided Osman with a large number of siege weapons, food and military intelligence, and even allowed Osman’s army to raid Byzantine imperial garrisons in his territory. Osman later told his subordinates: “John did not give me a daughter, he gave me a knife stuck in the heart of the Byzantine Empire.” This sentence later became the core of Osman’s foreign policy: never fight the Byzantines head-on, but take advantage of their civil unrest, using marriage, alliances and small-scale raids to gnaw away at Byzantine territory bit by bit.
