Chapter 1: Introduction: The Paradigm Shift in African Civilization Studies and the Research Scope of This Book
In October 2023, UNESCO announced the inscription of 12 unlooted pyramids at the Meroë site complex in northern Sudan into the World Heritage List, an archaeological achievement that not only fills the gap in the protection of Nubian-Kushite civilization world heritage, but also challenges the nearly two-century-long narrative of the "myth of African civilizational deficiency" with material evidence. Since the period of colonial expansion in the 19th century, Western academia has long defined Africa as a "continent without history", subsuming indigenous African civilization systems such as the Nubian-Kushite civilization in the upper Nile, the Aksumite civilization in the Horn of Africa, and the Swahili civilization along the East African coast into marginal appendages of Egyptian, Arab or European civilizations, and systematically erased their independent development trajectories and brilliant civilizational achievements. Since the mid-20th century, with the rise of African independence movements and the paradigm of postcolonial studies, Western academia has gradually corrected this narrow narrative, but long-standing discourse hegemony has left the study of the three major civilizations on the academic periphery for a long time, lacking both systematic comparative studies and integration into the macro-narrative framework of global civilizational history. This book aims to reconstruct the millennium-long rise and decline trajectory of the three major civilizations through interdisciplinary research methods, restore their "lost glory" as core participants in the ancient world system, and break the hegemony of Western academic discourse through Chinese-English bilingual presentation, providing a new paradigm reference for global African civilization studies.

1. Academic History of Western African Civilization Studies
(1) The "Myth of African Civilizational Deficiency" Paradigm in the Colonial Period
The "myth of African civilizational deficiency" is not an objective description of African history, but an ideological product of 19th-century colonial expansion, whose academic pedigree can be traced back to the Eurocentric world history narrative framework of the late Enlightenment. In 1822, Hegel explicitly proposed in his *Lectures on the Philosophy of World History* that "Africa is a 'continent without history'", whose residents are in a "state of nature" and cannot independently create civilizational achievements beyond the tribal level, a discourse that became the core theoretical basis of colonial academia[^1]. In the late 19th century, with the full expansion of colonial rule in Africa, Western anthropology, archaeology, and history systematically constructed the discourse system of the "myth of African civilizational deficiency": in 1911, British anthropologist W. H. R. Rivers claimed in *The African System of Kinship and Marriage* that all social forms in Africa are in the "primitive tribal stage", and there are no core elements of civilization such as states, writing, and monumental architecture; in the same year, anthropologist C. G. Seligman divided African residents into "primitive Negroes", "transitional races" and "superior races" in *The Races of Africa*, among which only the "Arab-Berber" in North Africa were included in the category of "civilized people", and sub-Saharan Africa was completely excluded from the narrative of civilizational history[^2].
In the field of archaeology, colonial African archaeology completely served the legitimacy needs of colonial rule, and the systematic erasure of the three major civilizations is a typical manifestation of this paradigm. In the late 19th century, German archaeologist Karl Richard Lepsius's archaeological excavation of the Nile River basin classified all cultural relics from the Nubian region as "accessories of ancient Egyptian civilization", claiming that Nubians are "barbarians enlightened by Egyptian civilization", and the achievements of their indigenous civilization were completely ignored. The 1922 excavation of Tutankhamun's tomb attracted global attention, and Western media described the Nubian-style funerary objects unearthed in the tomb as "war trophies of Egypt's conquest of Nubia", completely denying the independence and creativity of Nubian indigenous civilization. The study
The most typical case of the systematic erasure of the three major civilizations during the colonial period is the denial of the independence of the Nubian-Kushite civilization. In the 19th century, the excavation of the area from the second to the fourth cataracts of the Nile by a German archaeological team classified the 12 pyramids, tens of thousands of iron artifacts, and Kushite inscriptions unearthed at the Meroë site as "marginal relics of Egyptian civilization", even claiming that the Meroë pyramids were "colonial monuments" built by Egyptian pharaohs after conquering Nubia. It was not until the mid-20th century, when American archaeologist William Adams systematically excavated the Meroë site, that radiocarbon dating proved that these pyramids were built between 300 BCE and 350 CE, much later than the construction period of Egyptian pyramids, and their chamber structures and funerary objects had distinct indigenous Kush characteristics, rather than being copies of Egyptian styles[^3]. The erasure of Swahili civilization accompanied the expansion of colonial rule: after British colonizers occupied the East African coast in the 19th century, they systematically demolished the indigenous African-style buildings at the Kilwa Kisiwani site, rebuilt them as "Arab-style" colonial offices, and deleted all
