Imagine this: you're on a flight from Beijing heading south. After about three hours, the gray plains outside your window gradually give way to a tapestry of azure seas and emerald mountains. If you're sitting on the right side by the window, at some unexpected moment, you'll see an entirely new city emerge from beneath the clouds—towering buildings, glass facades glittering in the sunlight, the urban layout so orderly it looks as if it were drawn with a ruler. This is Shenzhen, China's youngest first-tier city, a miracle city that transformed from a fishing village to a metropolis in just forty years.
Shenzhen's geographic location is remarkably unique. Situated on the eastern bank of the Pearl River Estuary in southern China, it's separated only by a river from the international metropolis of Hong Kong. Looking at a map, Shenzhen resembles a pearl set in the coastal waters of the South China Sea, bordered by Dongguan and Huizhou to the north, Daya Bay to the east, the Zhuhai waterway to the west, and Hong Kong directly to the south. This distinctive location advantage made Shenzhen the forefront of China's reform and opening-up, transforming it into a crucial gateway connecting the mainland with the world.
From an administrative perspective, Shenzhen currently governs nine districts and two new areas. The nine districts are Luohu, Futian, Nanshan, Yantian, Baoan, Longgang, Longhua, Pingshan, and Guangming, while the two new areas are Dapeng New District and Shanwei Special Cooperation Zone. With a total area of approximately 1,997 square kilometers and a permanent population exceeding 17 million, Shenzhen is not large by Chinese urban standards—it's even smaller than one-eighth of Beijing's area. However, its economic aggregate has long ranked among the top three nationally, and its per capita GDP leads the way. In 2023, Shenzhen's GDP exceeded 3.2 trillion yuan, approximately 460 billion US dollars. If calculated as an independent economy, Shenzhen's scale could rival many medium-sized countries.
When it comes to Shenzhen's climate, the first thing most people think of is likely "hot." Indeed, Shenzhen has a subtropical monsoon climate, warm and humid throughout the year, with long summers and short winters. According to statistics, Shenzhen's annual average temperature ranges between 22 and 24 degrees Celsius. Even in the coldest month of January, the average temperature reaches 14 to 16 degrees, while the hottest month averages close to 29 degrees. For friends from northern China, Shenzhen's winter is practically a luxury—when you're shivering in Beijing in a down jacket at minus ten degrees, Shenzhen residents might be leisurely strolling through parks in short sleeves.
Besides warmth, Shenzhen also receives considerable rainfall. From May to September each year is Shenzhen's rainy season, with precipitation exceeding 80% of the annual total. Typhoons are regular visitors during summer and autumn, with an average of 3 to 4 typhoons affecting Shenzhen annually. Sometimes the fierce winds and heavy rain cause urban flooding and traffic disruptions, but more often, the fresh air and azure skies left after a typhoon pass through refresh the entire city. This climate condition keeps Shenzhen green year-round, with flowers blooming in all seasons. Walking through the city's streets, you'll see lush banyan trees, tall coconut palms, and various tropical plants whose names you may not know, creating a sense of boundless vitality.
However, if we rewind more than forty years to before the reform and opening-up, this same piece of land presented a completely different picture. In 1979, before reform and opening-up, Shenzhen was merely a small town under the jurisdiction of Bao'an County, small in area, economically backward, with sparse population. Local residents mainly lived by fishing and farming, with low living standards and almost zero infrastructure. There were no proper roads, no stable electricity supply, and certainly no modern communication facilities. Bao'an County's GDP in 1979 was only about 179 million yuan, with per capita GDP around 606 yuan, approximately 1/50th of Hong Kong's at the same time.
Shenzhen at that time was being too generous to describe it merely as "backward." Due to its border location, Shenzhen was long regarded as a "border restricted area" before reform and opening-up, with economic development severely limited. The living standards of local residents presented a stark contrast to Hong Kong just across the river—the other side of the river was a brightly lit prosperous metropolis, while this side was a pitch-black impoverished fishing village. This enormous gap drove many Shenzhen residents to risk their lives swimming across the Shenzhen River to secretly cross into Hong Kong for a living. According to statistics, from the 1950s to the early 1980s, more than 100,000 people secretly crossed from Shenzhen to Hong Kong, with nearly 20,000 people alone in 1978. This large-scale illegal border crossing wave was the most direct proof of Shenzhen's poverty and backwardness.
During that era, infrastructure in Bao'an County was extremely scarce. The entire county had only a few simple roads—dusty in dry weather and muddy when it rained. The journey from the county seat to Guangzhou took a whole day of bumpy travel, and going to Hong Kong was unimaginable. Medical and health conditions were also extremely rudimentary. Township-level clinics had simple equipment and scarce medicines, with many difficult illnesses having no local treatment options. Education levels were equally low, with most rural residents being illiterate or semi-literate, and few children could receive a complete compulsory education. Housing conditions were even more worrying. Rural areas generally had low, dilapidated earthen houses or brick-tile houses, with cramped per capita living space and poor sanitation conditions.
Shenzhen's "Blank Sheet of Paper": A Misunderstood Metaphor
When discussing Shenzhen's development history, people often use "a blank sheet of paper" to describe Shenzhen in the early days of reform and opening-up. This metaphor is vivid and形象的, but it easily leads to misunderstandi
