Chapter 1:
English Explanation
The Silk Road is not a single fixed road like the street outside your house, but a huge cross-continental network for trade, religious and cultural exchange that started around the 2nd century BC and lasted until the 15th century AD, for almost 2000 years! It is like an invisible big net spread on the Eurasian and African continents, connecting China, Central Asia, West Asia, Europe and even East Africa, so people from different places can exchange good things and share stories with each other.

(Steppe Silk Road)
#####
(Steppe Silk Road)
##### English Explanation This is the oldest branch of the Silk Road, even dating back to before the Silk Road was officially opened! Its starting point is the grassland area in northern China, which is now Inner Mongolia and the Mongolian Plateau, going west through the grasslands of Central Asia all the way to Eastern Europe, including Ukraine and southern Russia. Because the whole route is on vast grasslands, there is no need to cross high mountains or deserts, so it is very suitable for nomadic people to travel.
The most traded goods on this route are horses and nomadic specialties: the Central Plains in ancient China needed good horses from the northern grasslands for war and carriages; while the nomadic people on the grasslands needed tea, silk and ironware from the Central Plains. The most famous story is that during the reign of Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty, he heard that Dayuan (now the Ferghana Basin in Central Asia) produced "Ferghana horses", which run twice as fast as ordinary horses and can travel 1,000 li a day. Emperor Wu specially sent envoys along the Steppe Silk Road to Dayuan to buy horses, which is the earliest "official Silk Road trade"!

(Oasis Silk Road)
##### English Explanation This is the most classic and well-known Silk Road route, and the one most people refer to when they say "the Silk Road". Its starting point is Chang'an (now Xi'an), the capital of the Western Han Dynasty, going west through the Hexi Corridor (now Gansu area), reaching Dunhuang and then splitting into northern and southern routes, circling around the Taklamakan Desert (the largest desert in China, which means "once you go in, you can't get out" in Uyghur). Along the way, it passes through ancient oasis countries like Loulan, Kucha and Khotan, then goes west to Samarkand (now in Uzbekistan), then through Persia (now Iran) and Iraq, and finally reaches the Roman Empire in Europe.
The main means of transportation on this route is camels, because camels can go without water for more than ten days in the desert and carry very heavy loads. A caravan usually has dozens or even hundreds of camels, called "camel trains". The most important goods on the road are Chinese silk and porcelain: silk is light, valuable and easy to carry, and was the most popular luxury among European royal families at that time; although porcelain is heavy, it has very high profits. Merchants will wrap porcelain tightly with cotton and put it on the pack saddle of camels to prevent it from breaking.
There are many famous stories on this road: for example, Zhang Qian's mission to the Western Regions in the Western Han Dynasty took this road. He was captured by the Xiongnu for ten years, but still insisted on going west, and finally brought back news of the countries in the Western Regions. Emperor Wu of Han officially opened this Silk Road; another example is the Tang Dynasty monk Xuanzang's journey to India to obtain Buddhist scriptures, also took this road. When he passed by the Flaming Mountains in Turpan, the summer temperature could reach 50 degrees Celsius, so hot that even stones could be roasted. The legend of Xuanzang getting the banana fan from Princess Iron Fan happened here~

(Maritime Silk Road)
##### English Explanation In addition to the two land routes, there is also a Silk Road that travels by sea, called the "Maritime Silk Road". Its starting points are the southeastern coastal ports of China, such as Guangzhou, Quanzhou and Ningbo, going south through Southeast Asian countries like Vietnam, Thailand and Malaysia, passing through the Strait of Malacca, entering the Indian Ocean, then going west to the Arabian Peninsula and East Africa, all the way to present-day Kenya and Tanzania.
Large sea ships can carry hundreds or even thousands of tons of goods at a time, much more than camel caravans, s
