Welcome to the Robot World
| Welcome to the Robot World
---
Have you ever wondered what the future world will look like? Maybe you've watched some movies about robots, where they help humans do many things—some can talk, some can walk, and some can even save the world! Robots in movies always look cool and amazing, making us want to learn more about them.
Actually, in our real life, robots don't just exist in movies as fantasies. They are all around us, quietly helping us. Imagine: when you wake up in the morning, something on the floor is automatically moving around, keeping your room clean; when you look up at the sky, maybe a small plane is hovering overhead, but it has no pilot—that's a drone; when you walk into a factory, you might see some huge mechanical arms assembling cars, moving precisely and never making mistakes... These are all robots!
In this chapter, we're going to embark on a wonderful journey together to explore the mysteries of the robot world. We'll learn what robots are and why they can accomplish all kinds of amazing tasks. We'll discover that robots aren't really that mysterious—they're like us, with their own "eyes" to see, their own "brain" to think, and their own "hands and feet" to act. Of course, a robot's "brain" isn't made of cerebral cortex and neurons like ours, but of electronic components and program code. But that's exactly why robots can work tirelessly and complete tasks with precision.
Ready? Let's begin this exciting adventure together!

| What Is a Robot?
Before we start our adventure, we need to answer an important question: What exactly is a robot?
Maybe you'd say: "A robot is a machine that looks like a human!" This answer is partly right and partly inaccurate. It's right because the word "robot" does contain the character for "person," and many robots are indeed designed to look like humans. But it's inaccurate because not all human-shaped machines are robots, and not all robots look like humans.
So how do scientists define robots?
Scientific Definition of Robots
A robot is a machine that can sense its surroundings, make decisions based on that information, and then perform corresponding actions. Simply put, a robot is a machine that can "see, think, and do."
Let's break down this definition:
Can see" — Perception Ability
Robots have their own "eyes" and "ears" that allow them to sense the world around them. They can see objects through cameras, hear sounds through microphones, and feel temperature, pressure, light, and more through various sensors. Sensors are like a robot's senses, converting information from the outside world into electrical signals that are sent to the robot's "brain."
Can think" — Decision-Making Ability
Robots have their own "brain," which is made up of computer chips and programs. When a robot senses information from the outside world, its brain processes that information, analyzes the situation, and then makes decisions. For example, when a vacuum robot detects an obstacle ahead, its brain tells it: "There's something in front of me, I need to turn!"
Can do" — Actuation Ability
Robots have their own "hands and feet" that allow them to perform specific actions. These might be mechanical arms, wheels, propellers, or other devices that can move. When a robot makes a decision, its body carries out the corresponding action.
Robots, Machines, and Computers: What's the Difference?
Now you know the basic definition of a robot, but you might still have this question: What's the difference between robots, ordinary machines (like washing machines, electric fans), and computers?
This is a great question! Let's analyze it together:
Ordinary machines — like a washing machine, it only works according to a set program. You put clothes in, set the program, and the washing machine automatically washes, rinses, and spins. But the washing machine won't adjust its actions based on the situation—if there are more or fewer clothes, it won't judge for itself.
Computers — like the laptop we use, it can process information, run programs, and connect to the internet. But computers usually can't move by themselves, can't sense the physical world, and can't perform physical actions. Computers mainly process digital information.
Robots — they combine the characteristics of both machines and computers. Robots can not only process information (like computers) but also sense the physical world and perform physical actions (like machines). Moreover, robots can adjust their behavior based on changes in the surrounding environment—this is something ordinary machines cannot do.
To understand better, let's compare with a small table:
| 特点 / Feature | 普通机器 Ordinary Machine | 电脑 Computer | 机器人 Robot | |---|---|---|---| | 能感知世界 / Can sense the world | ❌ | ❌ | ✅ | | 能处理信息 / Can process information | ❌ | ✅ | ✅ | | 能执行动作 / Can perform actions | ✅ | ❌ | ✅ | | 能根据环境调整行为 / Can adjust behavior to environment | ❌ | ❌ | ✅ |
So, a robot is a special kind of machine—it has the "intelligence" of a computer, the "action ability" of a machine, and can react to changes in its surrounding environment. That's what makes robots special!

| Robot Friends Around Us
Now you know what robots are—have you seen any robots in your daily life? Actually, robots are all around us, quietly helping us, making our lives more convenient and easier.
Let's get to know some of the robot friends around us!
🧹 Vacuum Cleaning Robot — The Little Cleaning Helper at Home
Do you have one of those round, flat things at home that runs around on the floor by itself? It looks a bit like a flat disc, always running around the house by itself, sucking up dust and debris. Sometimes it bumps into walls and then turns around by itself to keep working—this is probably a vacuum cleaning robot!
A vacuum cleaning robot is a robot specifically designed to clean floo
