The summer sun filtered through the old windows into the attic, painting golden columns of light among the floating dust particles. The air was filled with the scent of old wood mixed with the camphor balls that grandmother had used in her youth, plus an indescribable aroma that seemed to come from long, long ago.
Xiao Ke was eight years old, a boy who was curious about everything. His hair was slightly curly, like the tender sprouts of spring, and his eyes always sparkled with question marks—the best proof that his head was full of questions. This summer vacation, he came to his grandmother's house in the countryside. Grandmother's house was an old residence over a hundred years old, with blue bricks and dark tiles, and the wooden stairs sang "creak, creak" when stepped on.
"Xiao Ke—come down and eat some watermelon!" Grandmother's voice called from downstairs, carrying a kind smile.
"Coming—" Xiao Ke responded, but didn't move immediately. His gaze was attracted by a large wooden box in the corner of the attic. The box was covered with dust and cobwebs, looking like it hadn't been opened for a very long time.
Curiosity was like a little kitten, scratching gently in his heart.
Xiao Ke stood on tiptoe, approaching that mysterious wooden box as silently as a cat. The lock on the wooden box was covered with rust, and the box lid was carved with some strange patterns—circles, squares, and some shapes like little flowers. Grandmother had told him that these patterns were how people long, long ago recorded important things.
Xiao Ke thought to himself, "Maybe there's treasure inside!" and his heartbeat couldn't help but quicken.
He found a rusty iron key—the key he had discovered in a broken pot next to the wooden box. When the key entered the lock hole, it made a "click" sound, as if something that had been sleeping for a long time had been awakened.
The wooden box lid slowly opened, and a richer scent rushed toward him—the smell of old books mixed with the gentle aroma of paper slowly aging.
What was inside the box made Xiao Ke's eyes widen: several yellowed old photo albums, a stack of cloth and grain tickets wrapped in red cloth, a few copper coins covered with rust spots, and...
Wait, what was that?
At the very bottom of everything, something was glowing.
Not the kind of light from sunlight reflecting off a surface, but a soft, warm, bluish glow that seemed to emanate from within. It was a notebook, neither too big nor too small, just right to hold in your hands. The cover was deep blue, with silver symbols written on it in strange patterns.
Holding his breath, Xiao Ke carefully reached out to touch that glowing notebook.
The moment his fingers just touched the cover—
"Ding-dong—"
A clear and pleasant sound rang out, like wind chimes gently swaying in a breeze. The notebook opened slowly by itself, the blue light growing brighter, and within the light, Xiao Ke saw some wonderful scenes:
Countless tiny particles were dancing—some looked like small balls, some like chains, some like building blocks, and some like... no, Xiao Ke rubbed his eyes, he must have been seeing things, how could those things be dancing?
Just as he was puzzled, a voice sounded:
"Welcome to the Future Science Adventure Manual! Material Number: 001, activation successful!"
Xiao Ke was so startled he almost jumped, looking around, but there was no one else in the attic.
"No need to look around, I'm right here!"
That voice sounded again, and this time Xiao Ke finally saw—
A transparent little fellow floated out from the notebook!
No, wait, he couldn't exactly be called "transparent." His body was composed of countless sparkling little balls, arranged in a human shape, dancing and gesticulating, like a dance team formed by fireflies holding hands. Every so often, these little balls would change colors—from carbon black to dark gray, from light gray to silver white, and from silver white to transparent, simply like performing magic!
"My name is Carbon!" the little fellow said, jumping up and down. "I'm made of carbon atoms! You can call me Carbon, or Carbon-Carbon—I like the name Carbon-Carbon better though, because it sounds more friendly!"
Xiao Ke rubbed his eyes, making sure he wasn't dreaming. The fairy from grandmother's stories had actually appeared?
"Where... where did you come from?" Xiao Ke asked stammering.
Carbon spun around Xiao Ke, his body sparkling like fireflies. "I came from very, very far away—so far you'd need to take a spaceship faster than light to get there!" Carbon patted his hands. "Simply put, I came from the future—from about a few hundred years in the future."
"Future?" Xiao Ke's eyes grew even wider. "You mean... people from the future?"
"More or less!" Carbon clapped his hands. "But to be precise, I'm a guide, and my mission is to introduce you to something magical—that's materials science!"
"Materials... science?" Xiao Ke tilted his head. "What's this? Is it edible?"
Hearing this, Carbon laughed so hard he trembled all over, his body shaking like a string of candied hawthorns. "Haha, Xiao Ke, that's such a cute question! Materials science isn't edible, but it's a hundred, a thousand, ten thousand times more magical than any food in the world!"
Carbon's explanation completely ignited Xiao Ke's curiosity. He plopped down on the dusty floor, which "creaked" in protest, but Xiao Ke didn't care at all.
"Then tell me quickly!" he urged. "What is materials science? Why did you say it's more magical than any food?"
Carbon cleared his throat—even though his transparent body didn't seem to have a throat to clear—and then explained seriously:
"Did you know, Xiao Ke, everything around us—the chair you sit on, the clothes you wear, the watermelon you eat, the air you breathe, the floor beneath your feet, the sky above your head—is all made up of one material after another."
"Materials are like 'building blocks' that make things?" Xiao Ke tried to unde
