Welcome to Dubai
Imagine standing on golden sand dunes, gazing at the endless desert where the sun watches over this land with its warmest gaze. Wind lifts fine sand into the air, dancing in spirals. Camels walk leisurely by, leaving trails of hoofprints. Just when you think there's nothing but golden expanse, a glittering skyscraper appears in the distance—its glass facade reflecting sunlight, like a castle from a fairy tale.
This is Dubai—a miracle city rising from the desert.
Where exactly is Dubai on our planet? Let's open a world map and look at the southwestern part of the Asian continent. On the eastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula, on the southern shore of the Persian Gulf (also called the Arabian Gulf), you'll find this pearl of the desert. Dubai's coordinates are approximately 25°15′ N latitude and 55°18′ E longitude, which means it lies at the junction of the tropical and subtropical zones of the Northern Hemisphere.
Dubai is not just a city—it's an emirate. The entire Emirate of Dubai covers about 4,114 square kilometers, roughly equivalent to four Singapore islands! But Singapore has 5.6 million people, while Dubai Emirate has only about 3.5 million. However, don't underestimate these 3.5 million people—they come from more than 200 different countries and regions around the world, making it a true melting pot.
The Arabian Peninsula—Home of the Desert
To understand Dubai, we must first meet its "home"—the Arabian Peninsula. The Arabian Peninsula is the largest peninsula in the world, covering about 3.23 million square kilometers—larger than all of India! It resembles a giant boot, extending between the Persian Gulf and the Arabian Sea of the Indian Ocean.

The Arabian Peninsula has diverse terrain. Looking at a map, the western and central parts feature high mountains and plateaus, such as the Hijaz and Asir Mountains in Saudi Arabia, with some peaks reaching over 3,000 meters—taller than many skyscrapers! East and south of these mountains lie vast deserts, mainly including the Rub' al Khali (Empty Quarter) and the An-Nafud.
The Rub' al Khali (Empty Quarter) is one of the largest continuous sand deserts in the world, covering about 650,000 square kilometers—equivalent to 65 Shanghai cities combined! Some dunes here reach heights of 250 meters, standing like golden skyscrapers in the wilderness.
Dubai's location on the eastern coastal region is a lowland plain along the Persian Gulf. While there are no towering mountains here, there is a narrow coastline stretching about 1,300 kilometers. The name "Persian Gulf" might suggest it's very large—actually it covers about 241,000 square kilometers with a maximum depth of about 110 meters. Although the name includes "Persian" (modern-day Iran), the southern coast is predominantly inhabited by Arabs.
The Persian Gulf is not just a geographical term—it's one of the world's busiest maritime routes. Every day, thousands of oil tankers sail from here, transporting oil to countries worldwide. You could say the Persian Gulf is like a "major artery" of the world economy, and Dubai sits right beside this artery.
Climate and Challenges: The Art of Living in the Desert
What is Dubai's climate like? Simply put, two words: hot and dry.
Dubai has a tropical desert climate (classified as BWh under the Köppen climate classification system). This means abundant sunshine year-round, extremely low rainfall, and high temperatures. Scientists use the "Köppen climate classification" system to categorize global climates, and Dubai is classified as "BWh" in the tropical desert climate category, where "B" represents arid climate, "W" represents desert, and "h" represents hot.
Let's look at some specific data to understand Dubai's climate characteristics:
From this table, we can discover several interesting patterns:
Extreme Temperature Variations
Dubai's summer (May to September) is extremely hot, with average high temperatures between 38°C and 41°C, sometimes even soaring above 50°C! In June 2010, Dubai recorded its highest temperature of 52.1°C! In winter (December to February), temperatures are relatively mild, with average highs between 24°C and 26°C, dropping to around 14°C at night.
$$T_{max} = 24 + 17 \times \sin\left(\frac{2\pi (m-1)}{12}\right)$$
This simplified formula shows the variation pattern of Dubai's monthly average maximum temperature: where $T_{max}$ is the monthly average maximum temperature, and $m$ is the month. Actual observations show summer temperatures can exceed what the formula predicts.
Nearly Zero Rainfall
Dubai's annual rainfall is only about 95 millimeters, while Beijing receives around 550 millimeters and Shanghai about 1,160 millimeters annually. This means Dubai might receive less rain in a whole year than Beijing or Shanghai gets during a single rainy season! More amazingly, from May to September, Dubai has almost no rain at all, with rainfall being zero for several consecutive months.
