Chapter 1: Unfolding the Great Book of Earth

A Book You Must Read Backwards
*If someone told you, "Please read this book from the last page to the first," would you find it strange?*
*Of course you would. We always start from the front cover and turn page after page—first the table of contents, then Chapter 1, Chapter 2… all the way to the back cover.*
*But dear reader, today Xiaorong and Aju are going to show you a very strange book. This book doesn't really have a clear "front" or "back" cover. Instead, it has—*
*—three stacked layers of "pages," descending from high in the west, step by step, to lower lands in the east.*
*This book's name is China.*
*Its authors are three very different "Geographic Grandparents." Their names are:*
- *Himalaya — the Snow Mountain Elder, silent and majestic, draped in an ice-and-snow cloak, living in the coldest place on Earth.*
- *Tibetan Plateau — Grandpa World-Roof, chubby, flat, lazily lying in the Snow Elder's arm.*
- *Pacific Monsoon — Grandma Sea-Wind, gentle and affectionate, every summer bringing moist kisses from the distant ocean.*
*These three elders have been quarreling for tens of millions of years. Every "argument" between them rewrites the geography of China. To understand the story of this Great Book of Earth, you must read it from west to east, from high to low.*
*That is why—Xiaorong and Aju's journey must go against the usual direction.*
---
How Two Little Travelers Met
*It happened on a summer afternoon.*
*Xiaorong's mother was organizing the bookshelf and pulled out a roll of yellowed paper from an old box. On the paper was a map—no, not an ordinary map. The mountains on it were breathing, the rivers were singing, and beside every place name was a tiny eye, blinking at Xiaorong.*
*"Wow!" Xiaorong reached out to touch it.*
*Just as her fingertip touched the words "Sichuan," a fluffy, orange-colored kitten sprang out of the map with a soft "poof," landing steadily on Xiaorong's palm.*
*The kitten spoke. It said:*
*"Hello, my name is Aju. I have lived inside this map for three thousand years. My job is to be a guide for children who truly love geography."*
*Xiaorong's eyes widened: "You can talk? You really came out of the map?"*
*Aju squinted her orange eyes and said seriously:*
*"Maps don't lie. The question is—can you read them?"*
*Xiaorong's face flushed red. Although she was only seven, she already knew thousands of Chinese characters. But she had never thought that knowing characters and reading a map were two entirely different things.*
*Aju read her thoughts, stretched out a small paw, and gently tapped the map.*
*The four characters "Qinghai-Tibet Plateau" suddenly rose up—becoming real snow mountains, with white banner clouds floating above their peaks and herds of Tibetan antelope running below.*
*Xiaorong leaped back in fright. But Aju said calmly:*
*"This is the 'front cover' of the map. In China's Great Book of Earth, the westernmost Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is the first page of the cover. It is the world's highest, largest, and youngest plateau, with an average elevation of over 4,000 meters—four thousand times higher than the rooftop of Xiaorong's apartment building."*

*Xiaorong looked at this strange world and suddenly understood something. She said: "I get it! You want me to... read the Great Book of Earth from west to east?"*
*Aju nodded, her eyes shining.*
*Yes. From west to east. From high to low. From snow mountains, all the way to plains. From 'cover,' all the way to 'back cover.'*

Why Must We Read from West to East?
*Many children ask: "Why can't we just read it in the normal order?"*
*This is where a small secret of the Earth comes in.*
*Imagine the Earth is a baker, baking a giant cake—*
- *He spreads the **coldest** cream on the **highest** layer of the cake (because the higher you go, the colder it gets).*
- *On the **middle** layer, he spreads **just-right** cream.*
- *On the **lowest** layer, he spreads the **warmest** cream with sweet fruit.*
*This "Terrain Cake," from left to right, from high to low, is exactly what China looks like.*
*If you try to eat the cake from east to west—you'll first taste the sweet fruit cream, then suddenly bite into ice-cold, teeth-chattering cream, then suddenly crunch into hard cake—you'll choke.*
*But if you eat it from west to east—your first bite is the cold cream (refreshing), your second is the gentle cream (comforting), your third is the sweet fruit (happy)—you'll truly understand the cake's layers.*
*Reading the Great Book of Earth is the same.*
*First, because the highest places hold the most stories. Why does China have snow mountains? Why is it cold there? Why does it have so many incredible landscapes? The answers are hidden in the western First Step. By starting from the highest "cover," you hold the key to this whole book.*
*Second, because water flows downhill, people climb uphill—these two things go in opposite directions. We must first understand why water flows this way (from west to east), to understand why people have migrated this way (from east to west, then from west to east). Reading the "cover" first helps us see what comes next.*
*Third, and most importantly—because Chinese civilization (文明 / civilization) slowly unfolded from west to east. The earlie
