Chapter 1 · The Silver Letter
A Sleepless Night
* > *"The moon cannot speak, but if you grow still, it shines more gently."*
Xiaoyue pulled her quilt up to the tip of her nose and stared wide-eyed at the ceiling.
There were no stars on the ceiling—only the shadow of a streetlamp slipping through the gap in the curtain, swaying on the wall like a cat that couldn't fall asleep. The only real warmth in the room came from Snowball, the ragdoll cat curled at her feet, snow-white all over except for a small splash of cream on the tip of her left ear. Her purr hummed so low it was like a tiny heater, keeping Xiaoyue's toes from freezing in the chill of a September night.
Xiaoyue couldn't sleep.
This was already the twenty-first sleepless night since she had transferred schools. If she drew a flower on the calendar for every night she couldn't sleep, her September calendar would probably bloom with a dense garden of tiny flowers—lonely flowers, but shining ones.
Her room was nice. Her father had said it faced south and had the best light. The little girl who used to live here had loved to draw, and on the wall there were still pale blue clouds—not real clouds, but ones layered with light blue and white paint, edges as soft as actual clouds. The first time Xiaoyue walked in, she stared at those clouds for a long time and thought: the girl who painted them must have watched the sky a lot too.
But no matter how nice the room was, it wasn't hers.
She missed her old room. That one faced north and never got any sunlight. The wallpaper was peeling a little, and in summer a gecko would crawl in through the window crack. Her mother always complained, "How can there be a gecko!" But Xiaoyue liked that gecko. She named it "Little Green," and she believed Little Green would listen to her stories about school. When they moved, Little Green didn't come with them, and Xiaoyue cried secretly for a whole night.
After transferring, she hadn't made any new friends.
It wasn't that nobody wanted to play with her. It was that she herself often sat alone on the bench in the corner of the playground, watching ants move house, watching leaves tumble, watching clouds drift slowly across the square sky. The kids at the new school played a kind of game she wasn't very familiar with; when they laughed, their voices were loud, and she couldn't squeeze in. She had tried a few times, and each time she felt like a bean blown crooked by the wind, unable to stand upright.
She didn't dare tell her mom and dad. She was afraid they'd worry, and even more afraid they'd sigh and then say, "You need to be a little braver."
The word "brave" was too heavy—heavy as a stone. An eight-year-old girl couldn't carry a stone. The only things an eight-year-old girl could carry were her little quilt, her little pillow, and her little secrets.
So she hid her secret in the night sky.
Every night, after her mom said "goodnight," after her dad turned off the hallway light, after Snowball jumped onto the bed and curled into a ball at her feet, she would quietly open her eyes, reach one hand out from under the quilt, and slowly pull back a corner of the curtain—just one corner—so that the moonlight, like a silver finger, would gently tap her cheek.
Then she would stare at the moon.
The moon was her only friend who didn't move away. The moon didn't transfer schools, didn't move houses, and wouldn't suddenly decide one day that it didn't like her. Every night the moon appeared in the sky right on time—sometimes round like a white steamed bun, sometimes curved like a smiling eye, sometimes hiding behind clouds playing hide-and-seek with her.
Xiaoyue liked the moon. She felt the moon could understand everything she said.
The moon, I got called on to answer a question again today," she said in her heart.
The moon, the girl at the next desk wouldn't lend me an eraser," she said in her heart.
"The moon, I miss my old school so much." And sometimes tears would slide down from the corner of her eye along with these words, dripping onto the pillow, cool and quiet.
The moon never answered her. But at that moment, the moonlight would always become a little gentler—maybe it was an illusion, or maybe moonlight really could understand the whispered secrets of a child.
That night, the moon was hiding behind a thin layer of clouds, like a silver coin covered with a piece of gauze.
Xiaoyue looked at it and began talking in her heart as usual. What she said was: "Moon, today I drew a picture—a cat and a moon—but it came out ugly, so ugly I don't even want to look at it."
As she spoke, her eyelids grew heavier. The clouds drifted slowly outside the window; the moonlight flickered on and off like a very, very slow lullaby. She thought, I'll close my eyes after just one more look at the moon.
In that very instant when she was about to close her eyes—she saw it.
Something on the windowsill was glowing.

The Silver Miracle on the Windowsill
* > *The windowsill had held only moonlight.* > *The moonlight suddenly became something else.*
Xiaoyue was wide awake in an instant.
She rubbed her eyes, afraid she was dreaming. But she knew this wasn't a dream, because Snowball was also awake—Snowball's ears stood up, her round eyes stared unblinkingly at the windowsill, and her tail gently patted the quilt with soft "tap tap" sounds. Cats don't share dreams with people, so if Snowball saw it too, then it must be real.
Xiaoyue threw off the quilt and got out of bed barefoot.
The September floor was a little cold, cold enough to make her little toes curl up. But she didn't care. She tiptoed step by step toward the windowsill, as if afraid of startling something—she couldn't quite explain what she was afraid of startling, but the feeling was very strong, as if the glowing thing on the windowsill was a small bird that could be easily frightened.
She stopped in front of the windowsill.
The moonlight was lying on the windowsill, but not only the moonlight—there was a letter lying in it.
It was a very ordinary white envelope, but for some reason it shimmered with a faint silver glow in the m
