Have you ever stood at a crossroads, unsure which path to take? Should you go to the park to play soccer first, or finish your math homework? Should you apologize to a friend first, or wait for them to speak up? These little choices can sometimes leave us hesitating for a long time. Imagine if there were a "wisdom compass" from over three thousand years ago that could gently turn and point you in a clear direction when you feel lost—how wonderful that would be! This magical book is the "I Ching" (《易经》). It is not a "magic book" for predicting the future, but a thinking tool to help understand change and make wise decisions. Just like a navigation app on your phone: you input a starting point and destination, and it plans the best route; the I Ching observes the laws of development, helps you analyze the present situation, foresee possible directions, and thus enables you to face choices with greater calm. In this chapter, we will push open the door to this thousand-year wisdom together, learn about the origin and core ideas of the I Ching, and how it encodes the changing patterns of all things in the universe with the simplest Yin-Yang symbols. Are you ready? Let’s begin this time-traveling adventure!
In the long river of human civilization, some wisdom shines like the North Star, remaining bright after thousands of years. The I Ching is exactly such a star. It was born in the late Neolithic period of China, around 3000 BCE, and is said to have been created by Fuxi, the cultural ancestor, who observed the heavens and the earth and distilled the most basic symbolic system. Later, King Wen of Zhou (Ji Chang), while imprisoned in the late Shang Dynasty, stacked Fuxi’s eight trigrams in pairs to derive sixty-four hexagrams and wrote explanations for them, elevating them from natural symbols into guides for human decision-making. Confucius and his disciples then composed the "Ten Wings" (《易传》), interpreting their principles from a philosophical height, ultimately forming the I Ching system we see today. This classic is hailed as "the foremost among the classics, the source of the great way," influencing Chinese philosophy, science, art, and even daily life. However, to many children, the I Ching seems shrouded in mysterious symbols, appearing profound and inaccessible. In truth, once you grasp its "compass" principle, you can use it like a real compass to help make your own decisions.
According to legend, Fuxi lived in an era when people survived by gathering and hunting. Every day, he would gaze at the sky, seeing the sun rise and set, the alternation of light and darkness; he would look at the earth, watching rivers flow, mountains stand still, and wind, thunder, and rain change unpredictably. These phenomena seemed chaotic, but Fuxi keenly sensed that two fundamental forces lay behind them: one full of vitality, rising, warm, and bright; the other still, sinking, cold, and dark. He used a solid line "——" to represent this active, bright force, naming it "Yang" (阳); and a broken line "——" to represent the passive, dark force, naming it "Yin" (阴). This is the origin of the Yin-Yang concept.
- ☰ (乾) 三阳爻,象征天,代表创造、刚健;
- ☷ (坤) 三阴爻,象征地,代表承载、柔顺;
- ☵ (坎) 中间阳爻上下阴爻,象征水,代表险陷、智慧;
- ☲ (离) 中间阴爻上下阳爻,象征火,代表光明、依附;
- ☳ (震) 下面阳爻上面两个阴爻,象征雷,代表震动、行动;
- ☴ (巽) 下面阴爻上面两个阳爻,象征风,代表渗透、谦逊;
- ☶ (艮) 上面阳爻下面两个阴爻,象征山,代表停止、稳固;
Next, Fuxi pondered: if Yin and Yang are the basic "building blocks" of the world, how many different patterns can be made with three such blocks? He experimented and found only eight unique combinations, each corresponding to a natural phenomenon or force. These are the "Eight Trigrams":
- ☰ (Qian) three Yang lines, symbolizing Heaven, representing creativity and strength;
- ☷ (Kun) three Yin lines, symbolizing Earth, representing receptivity and gentleness;
- ☵ (Kan) a Yang line sandwiched between two Yin lines, symbolizing Water, representing danger and wisdom;
- ☲ (Li) a Yin line sandwiched between two Yang lines, symbolizing Fire, representing brightness and attachment;
- ☳ (Zhen) a Yang line at the bottom with two Yin lines above, symbolizing Thunder, representing movement and action;
- ☴ (Xun) a Yin line at the bottom with two Yang lines above, symbolizing Wind, representing penetration and humility;
- ☶ (Gen) a Yang line at the top with two Yin lines below, symbolizing Mountain, representing stillness and stability;
- ☱ (Dui) a Yin line at the top with two Yang lines below, symbolizing Lake, representing joy and communication.
These eight symbols are
In the late Shang Dynasty, King Zhou of Shang was tyrannical, and King Wen of Zhou (Ji Chang) was imprisoned in Youli (present-day Tangyin, Henan) for seven years due to his virtue. During this confinement, Ji Chang did not despair but systematically derived sixty-four hexagrams by stacking two trigrams from Fuxi’s original eight. Each hexagram consists of six lines (yao). This arrangement was not random but based on a profound understanding of developmental laws: all things in the world often result from the interaction of internal and external forces. The inner trigram represents internal conditions or the subject, while the outer trigram represents external circumstances or the object, together painting a more complete picture of a situation. For example, ䷀ (Qian below Qian above) symbolizes "The movement of Heaven is strong; a superior person should constantly strive for self-improvement," representing pure Yang strength; ䷁ (Kun below Kun above) symbolizes "The receptiveness of Earth is gentle; a superior person should cultivate vast virtue to carry all things," representing pure Yin gentleness. King Wen also wrote judgments for each hexagram, such as "Yuan Heng Li Zhen" (元亨利贞) for Qian, succinctly summarizing its core spirit, transforming natural symbols into guides for human affairs.
King Wen’s innovation lay in constructing a dynamic decision matrix. The sixty-four hexagrams are not sixty-four isolated conclusions but a rotatable "wisdom compass." When you are in a certain hexagram, by observing changes in some line
