The rain fell like strings of pearls dropping from the sky, pattering against the windows. Little Ming walked alone on the path home from school, his worn blue backpack slung over his shoulders. Today was his tenth birthday, but both his parents had to work overtime, and no one was there to celebrate with him. He couldn't help feeling a little sad and lonely.
However, the pattering rain added a touch of poetry to Ming's journey. He deliberately slowed his pace, stepping into the little puddles along the road, splashing up small flowers of water with his rain boots. The streetlights flickered on one by one, reflecting off the wet pavement and making it shimmer like scattered silver coins.
Just as Ming passed the quiet alley beside his school, something caught his eye. There, on the edge of a concrete flower bed in the corner of the alley, something seemed to be glowing faintly. The light was very weak; if not for the reflection of the rain, he wouldn't have noticed it at all.
Ming stopped and tilted his head to take a closer look. It was a letter! A letter half-soaked by the rain, with a deep brown envelope whose edges had curled up, as if it had been waiting there for a very, very long time.
"How did this letter end up here?" Ming said to himself. He looked around the alley, but there was no one in sight, only the sound of rain keeping him company. He squatted down and carefully picked up the letter.
The moment Ming's fingers touched the envelope, he felt a wonderful warmth flow through his fingertips. The temperature was just right—not too hot, not too cold—like a hot water bottle his mother would warm up for him in winter. This sensation lasted only a second, but it made Ming's heart race unexpectedly.
There was no recipient's name on the envelope, nor any sender's address. On the front, there was a drawing of an open palm, with simple and graceful lines, the lines on the palm clearly visible. Beside the palm, there was also the outline of a human face, with eyes, nose, and mouth all drawn in simple lines, yet radiating an air of mystery.
Ming flipped the envelope over. On the back, there were a few lines of wobbly handwriting, as if written with some kind of ancient ink:
"Dear little friend, hello! I knew you must be a curious child. I've hidden a secret in this letter—a secret about your palm. Do you want to know that your palm can talk? It can tell you many, many stories about you! Hurry, open this letter and see what surprises are hidden inside. — An old friend who has been waiting for a long time"
After reading this passage, Ming's jaw dropped in amazement. He had never seen such a magical letter before. A palm that could talk? How was that possible? But the mysterious aura emanating from the letter made him unable to resist wanting to find out more.
The rain grew heavier and heavier. Ming quickly stuffed the letter into his backpack and ran home as fast as his legs could carry him. His heart was pounding rapidly, and his mind was filled with speculation about what secrets were hidden in the envelope. Was it some kind of magic? Or some ancient treasure? Or perhaps some magical creature he had never seen before?
By the time Ming reached his doorstep, he was soaked to the bone. His school uniform was drenched, his hair plastered to his forehead, and his rain boots had filled with water. He took out his keys and opened the door. The house was dark and quiet—his parents really hadn't come home yet.
Ming changed into dry slippers and pajamas, then took out the mysterious letter from his backpack. Instead of opening an umbrella, he carefully tore open the envelope's seal. Something was inside, making it bulge; he could feel the texture of paper, along with something hard and cool.
He poured out three things from the envelope.
The first thing was an old, yellowed photograph. The edges of the photo were a bit worn, but the image was still clear. In the photo was a kind-looking old man wearing round glasses, his eyes smiling behind the lenses like two curved crescent moons. The old man had a long, silvery-white beard that hung down to his chest, swaying gently in the breeze. He wore a deep blue robe, looking both like a scholar from ancient times and a wizard from a fairy tale.
The second thing was a palm-sized notebook. Its cover was made of dark brown leather, feeling rough yet warm to the touch, with an ancient and mysterious quality. There was no text on the cover, only a palm pattern embossed in the center—and that pattern was exactly the same as the lines on Ming's own palm!
The third thing was a neatly folded piece of paper. When unfolded, it turned out to be a hand-drawn map. The map showed a small house, with a big tree beside it, and a person standing under the tree—the person was the old man from the photograph! In the corner of the map, there was a small note: "Ming, when you finish reading this book, come find me."
Ming looked at these three items, his heart full of questions. Who was this old man? How did he know Ming's name? Could a palm really talk? Where was that little house? These questions fluttered around in Ming's mind like a flock of little butterflies, making him both excited and confused.
Just then, a rumble of thunder sounded outside the window, followed by lightning streaking across the sky, illuminating the entire room. Ming instinctively flinched—he was a bit afraid of thunder. Every time it thundered, he would hide under his blanket and cover his ears tightly. But today, his curiosity overcame his fear.
Ming sat down at his desk and turned on the green-shaded lamp. The warm light fell on the ancient notebook, gilding the dark brown cover with a golden edge. He took a deep breath and gently opened the first page of the notebook.
The first page of the notebook read:
"Dear child, welcome to this magical notebook. I am Palm Grandpa, and I have been waiting for you in this book for a very, very long time. You must have many questions, right? Don't worry, I will answer them one by one. Please read the contents of each page carefully, then place your palm on the corres
