Chapter 1: Let's Go, Little Explorers! /
Have you ever dreamed of traveling around the world? Have you ever wondered what's on the other side of our planet? Have you ever been curious about why some places are covered in ice all year round while others are hot as summer? When you unfold a map, what stories are those colorful lines and symbols trying to tell you?
Welcome to "Exploring the Planet: A Global Geography Adventure"! In the next fifteen chapters of our journey together, we will explore the endless mysteries of this blue planet. As your guide, I will take you across the seven continents, across the five oceans, from the highest mountains to the deepest ocean trenches, from ancient tropical rainforests to mysterious polar glaciers. You will learn to read maps, use compasses, and understand the mysteries of climate change like a real explorer.
But before we embark on our real adventure, we need to master some basic tools and knowledge first. Just like an architect needs to learn how to use rulers and compasses, a painter needs to understand the basics of color, an explorer also needs to understand the Earth's basic structure, master the skills of reading maps, and be familiar with the representation of directions and locations. These basic knowledge pieces are like an explorer's "universal toolkit" — no matter where you go, they will always come in handy.
In this chapter, we will start from the most basic knowledge. We will deeply understand the Earth's internal structure — from the solid crust to the hot core — and learn how our home is composed. We will learn the basic elements of maps, including scale, legend, and directional indicators. These seemingly simple elements are actually the keys to opening the door to the world of geography. We will explore the mysteries of topographic maps and see how ancient mapmakers used two-dimensional paper to represent three-dimensional terrain. We will get to know the seven continents and five oceans and understand the overall layout of the planet we live on. Finally, we will also learn the basic concepts of time zones and climate zones, understanding why it's daytime in Beijing when it's nighttime in New York, and why equatorial regions are always hot while polar regions are cold all year round.
Are you ready? Let's begin this exciting adventure! Buckle up, hold on tight, and let's set off!

Earth's Internal Structure
From Apple Core to Earth Egg
Let's do a little experiment first. Take an apple and carefully cut it in half horizontally. What do you see? The apple's skin is like a protective coat, the flesh you see after cutting is the thick mesocarp layer, and the core at the very center contains the seeds. The Earth's structure is actually very similar to an apple!
The Earth can be divided into four main layers, just like a giant "Earth egg": the Crust, the Mantle, the Outer Core, and the Inner Core. Each layer has its unique properties and composition, which have crucial effects on life on Earth.

The Crust: Our Home's Shell
The crust is the outermost solid shell of the Earth, just like the skin of an apple. Although the crust seems very solid to us, if we imagine the Earth as an apple, the crust's thickness is actually even thinner than an apple's skin! Imagine if the apple were the Earth, then the apple's skin would be much thicker than it actually is!
The average thickness of the crust is about 35 kilometers, but this number varies greatly in different places. Continental crust is usually thicker, averaging about 35-40 kilometers, with the thickest areas reaching over 70 kilometers, which is why the Himalayan region can have the world's highest peak — Mount Everest (elevation 8,848.86 meters). The ocean floor's crust is much thinner, called oceanic crust, with an average thickness of only 5-10 kilometers.
地壳主要由岩石组成,包括我们熟悉的 granite(花岗岩)和 basalt(玄武岩)。
The crust is mainly composed of rocks, including the familiar granite and basalt. Granite is a rock containing quartz, feldspar, and mica, usually appearing in pink, gray, or white colors — we often see it when hiking. Basalt is a dark, fine-grained rock that forms when lava from volcanic eruptions cools down.
