The winter in the Anatolian plateau always came early. On the night when a little boy named Osman was born, when the first snow covered the rolling hills and yellow grasslands, a strange light appeared in the sky. That light rose from the eastern horizon, piercing through the snowstorm, as if heaven was lighting a lamp to celebrate the arrival of this new life.
Osman's cry rang out inside the tent, clear and strong, like the bleating of a newborn lamb standing on the grass for the first time. His mother—a gentle but strong woman named Hayriye—held him tightly in her arms, using her own body to shield him from the wind and snow outside.
"God must love our child very much," Hayriye whispered, tears glistening in her eyes, "Look at that light outside, how bright it is."
Osman's father, named Ertugrul, was a tall and broad-shouldered man with deep, penetrating eyes. Looking at the baby in his wife's arms, an unfamiliar emotion surged in his heart. It was a sense of responsibility, a promise, a determination to give his child a good life on this land.
"Let's name him Osman," the father said, "This name means 'parrot,' the smartest and most beautiful bird on the grasslands. May my son be as wise and beautiful as a parrot."
Outside the tent, the snowstorm gradually subsided. Hearing the baby's cry, the other members of the tribe came out from their tents, their faces lit with joyful smiles. They brought lamb meat, cheese, and warm blankets to bless this new life. On the grasslands, every child's birth was a significant event, because children represented hope and the future strength of the tribe.
Childhood on the Grasslands
Osman grew up in just such an environment. On the grasslands of the Anatolian plateau, the four seasons were distinct and the scenery was picturesque. In spring, tender green grass sprouted from the earth, and colorful wildflowers covered the hillsides. In summer, warm sunshine bathed the land, and flocks of sheep grazed leisurely on the grasslands. In autumn, golden leaves carpeted the earth, and herders were busy harvesting hay, preparing for winter. In winter, snow covered everything, and the world became quiet and pure.
Osman's father Ertugrul was the leader of the tribe. Although it was only a small tribe, in those turbulent times, being able to lead several dozen families to survive on this land was already a remarkable achievement. The people of the tribe lived by herding, raising sheep, goats, cattle, and horses. Sheep's milk could be made into cheese, wool could be woven into blankets and clothes, while cattle and horses were important means of transportation and symbols of wealth.
"Little Osman, come, ride this pony!" one day, the father led over a small brown colt. The foal had big, bright eyes and looked very gentle.
Osman was only three years old at the time. He looked at the pony, both excited and a bit scared. It was his first time seeing a horse up close. Its tall body, sturdy legs, and flowing mane seemed to him like a moving little hill.
"Don't be afraid," the father knelt down and patted his head, "Horses are the best friends of us grassland people. You see, just like humans, they have feelings and can recognize their owners. As long as you treat them well, they will become your most loyal companion."
With his father's help, Osman mounted the horse for the first time. That feeling was truly wonderful—he felt as if he had grown much taller, and his vision suddenly broadened. He could see far, far away, the snow-capped mountains at the horizon, the wisps of smoke rising from nearby tents. From that moment on, Osman fell in love with riding. He vowed that one day he would ride the fastest horse and become the bravest rider on the grasslands.
The Hardships of Learning Archery
Time passed, and Osman was already five years old. On the grasslands, a five-year-old was not considered young anymore. They had to start learning various survival skills. Archery was one of the most important.
"How can a grassland man not know how to shoot?" said Alparslan grandpa, an old hunter in the tribe, stroking his flowery white beard, "The bow and arrow are precious treasures left to us by our ancestors. Long, long ago, our brave forefathers relied on this bow to drive away countless enemies and protect our tribe."
Alparslan grandpa was the best archer in the tribe. They said that when he was young, he could shoot an arrow right into the eye of a running hare. Osman loved listening to the old man's stories the most. Every time he heard tales of the ancestors' heroic deeds, little Osman's eyes sparkled with admiration.
"Grandpa, can you teach me archery?" Osman tugged at the old man's hand, pleading.
Alparslan grandpa looked at this sturdy little boy and burst out laughing: "Good lad, you have ambition! But archery is no easy task. You must be prepared to work hard."
And so, Osman began his archery training. At first, Alparslan grandpa had him practice drawing the bow. The seemingly simple action was not easy at all. Little Osman had to pull the bowstring to its full extent and aim ahead, which required great arm strength and good body coordination.
After the first day of practice, Osman's arms ached so much he could barely lift them. He lay in the tent, eyes red and filled with grievance.
"What, want to give up?" Father came in and sat beside him, "Child, do you know why grassland children have to learn archery from a young age?"
"Because... because archery can be used for hunting, for self-defense?" little Osman said quietly.
"That's right," Father nodded, "But there's something even more important. On this land where we live, there are many who want to bully us. They steal our pastures, our cattle and sheep, and even want to take away our families. If we don't know how to shoot arrows, how to fight, how can we protect the people we love?"
Father's words stirred waves in young Osman's heart. He thought of his mother, of the kind people in the tribe, of the pony he had ridden. He couldn't let them come to harm.
