Chapter 1: The Magic Box Opens /
The sun's rays filtered through the old attic window, casting diagonal beams that traced countless tiny dust particles dancing in the air. Lina stood on tiptoe, carefully navigating through the attic filled with old relics. The wooden floor creaked softly beneath her feet. This was Grandmother's attic, a corner forgotten by time, housing memory fragments left by three generations—faded photo albums, rusted bicycles, porcelain dolls with missing pieces, and those dusty old trunks.
Lina was eight years old, at an age when curiosity about the world was at its peak. Both her parents were doctors, busy with hospital work every day, so her happiest moments were spent at Grandmother's house. Grandmother always told her various stories with those wrinkled hands—tales of ancient legends and modern life, of the vast starry sky and the ants beneath their feet. Whenever this happened, Lina felt the entire world unfolding before her eyes, like an infinitely extending scroll painting.
Today, Grandmother was tending to her garden flowers downstairs while Lina explored the attic alone. She had visited this place many times and knew the old objects well, but today her attention was drawn to something in a corner—a trunk she had never noticed before. It was an old wooden box with delicate vine patterns carved into it. Though time had worn the patterns somewhat vague, one could still see the exquisite craftsmanship from long ago. An antique copper lock hung on the trunk, with verdigris gathering around its keyhole.
Lina gently stroked the patterns on the box, her fingertips feeling the touch of time's erosion. She tried to open the box, but the copper lock held firm. Just as she was about to leave to find Grandmother's help, she noticed a small hidden compartment at the bottom of the box. She pried at it with her fingernails, and a small wooden board loosened, revealing what lay inside—a small key, resting quietly in the compartment, as if it had been waiting for this moment for a very long time.
Heart pounding in her chest, Lina held her breath and slowly inserted the key into the lock. A perfect fit. She gently turned the key, and the copper lock clicked open, as if opening a door to another world. The lid rose slowly, and a scent of turpentine mixed with dried flower petals rushed to meet her—a scent belonging to Grandmother's youth, carrying the sediment of time and the fragrance of memories.
The contents of the box made Lina hold her breath. First to catch her eye was a set of exquisite paintbrushes, neatly arranged on a wooden brush rack—some thick, some thin, some long, some short, each emanating a soft glow. Then came the paint boxes, and though the paints had dried, the colors remained vivid and dazzling—deep crimson, cobalt blue, cadmium yellow, viridian green. Each color seemed to tell a story. There were also canvases, easels, palettes of various sizes, and a stack of yellowed sketchbooks.
What excited Lina most was a letter pressed at the bottom of the box, the envelope addressed in beautiful calligraphy: "To My Future Little Artist." Lina carefully opened the envelope. Inside was a letter and an old photograph. The photograph showed a young beautiful woman holding a paintbrush, before an unfinished landscape painting. Her eyes were bright and deep, filled with love for art and passion for life.
The letter read:
"My little angel, when you open this box, it means you are ready. Drawing is not merely leaving traces of a brush on paper—it is a kind of magic. A magic that can present your inner world, your emotions, and your dreams. Every painting is a window through which people can peer into the depths of the painter's soul. Starting today, I will pass this magic on to you. May you find happiness in the world of colors, freedom in the changes of lines, and your own treasure in the ocean of painting."
Lina's eyes grew moist. She had never seen Grandmother when she was young, but now, looking at that vibrant young woman in the photograph and then at the warm letter in her hand, she seemed to travel through time and truly understood Grandmother's past for the first time. So Grandmother, too, had once had dreams, passion for art, and a youth filled with colors.
Just then, footsteps sounded on the stairs. "Lina, dear, are you up there?" Grandmother's voice came from downstairs. Lina quickly wiped her eyes, ran downstairs, clutching the mysterious box tightly in her arms.
"I'm here, Grandma!" Lina's voice couldn't hide her excitement. "I found a box! There are so many painting things inside, and a letter you wrote!" Her eyes sparkled like she had discovered Aladdin's treasure.
Grandmother set down her garden trowel and slowly climbed upstairs. When she saw the box in Lina's hands, a flash of surprise crossed her dim eyes, then melted into tender nostalgia. "You found it," Grandmother said softly, her voice carrying a tremor. "I thought it would stay there forever. I never imagined it was waiting for you."
Grandmother sat down on the old sofa in the attic, gesturing for Lina to sit beside her. Sunlight fell through the window onto them both, casting their shadows on the mottled floor. Grandmother took out a painting from the box—a watercolor of a lavender field, with white farmhouses of Provence in the distance and fluffy white clouds floating in the sky.
"This painting is from when I was young," Grandmother said, gently stroking the frame. "Back then, I was about your age, also at an age when curiosity knew no bounds. My father—your great-grandfather—was the only painter in our village. He never received formal training; all his techniques came from hands-on practice. But everything he painted could move people deeply."
