On the northeastern corner of the African continent, a unique river flows quietly, having done so for five thousand years. Unlike the Yangtze River that roars through mountains, or the Amazon that charges through rainforests; she moves more like an elegant dancer, taking light steps from south to north, using her emerald waters to draw a verdant silk ribbon through golden deserts. The local people called her "iteru," meaning "the river"—because before her, all languages seemed inadequate, and no one could find a more beautiful word to describe her. In distant China, we gave her a beautiful name: Nile River. 尼罗河, ní luó hé—listening to the sounds, it seems like a mother calling her most cherished child. Indeed, the Nile River was the mother of ancient Egypt, nurturing a great civilization on this land with her sweet milk.
Let us take the time machine back to that dawn four thousand five hundred years ago. When the first light of dawn pierced the horizon, all of Egypt still slumbered, only the Nile had awakened first. A thin layer of morning mist floated on the river's surface, like a light veil draped over the earth. Papyrus reeds on the riverbank swayed gently in the breeze, whispering their secrets, as if recounting dreams of the night. In the distance, several herons stood on one leg in shallow water, quietly waiting for fish to appear, their reflections forming a symmetrical picture on the calm surface. Just then, a small figure appeared on the palace balcony—those were curious eyes, gazing curiously at this magical land.
That was a seven-year-old boy named Osiris. He was the son of the pharaoh of Egypt, living since childhood in this beautiful palace built on the banks of the Nile. Osiris had eyes as deep as the Nile River, and glossy black hair. When he was still a baby, his mother, the goddess Isis, would often hold him by the river, telling him stories about this great river. Now that Osiris had grown, he began to observe this river with his own eyes and feel her magic with his own heart.
Every morning, Osiris would wake early, dress in a white loincloth made of linen, drape a light goatskin cloak over his shoulders, and then eagerly rush to the balcony. The balcony was filled with lotuses transplanted from the Nile Delta—white ones, pink ones, even pale purple ones. When the sun rose, these lotuses would slowly unfurl their petals, as if saying "good morning" to the sun. Osiris's favorite thing was to lean over the balcony railing, watching golden sunlight gradually spread across the entire river surface.
"You are looking at the river again!" one morning, a voice came from behind Osiris. He turned around to see his brother Seth. Seth was two years younger than Osiris, with quick eyes and stubborn red hair. Seth was always energetic, like a small flame ready to ignite at any moment.
"Yes, Seth," Osiris said with a smile, "Look, the sun is rising. The mist on the Nile is dispersing, like a huge veil being gently lifted. Do you know what that means?"
Seth scratched his head: "Does it mean it's time for breakfast?"
Osiris laughed, his smile as warm as morning sunlight: "It means the fishermen are going out to sea. Look over there!"
The two brothers leaned on the railing, watching the river surface intently. Indeed, in the nearby river bend, several small boats were slowly sailing out. The boats were made of bundled papyrus, crescent-shaped, light and agile. The fishermen on the boats were paddling while singing ancient songs. Their voices floated across the water and drifted onto the palace balcony.
"Brother," Seth asked curiously, "do they go fishing every day?"
"Yes, every single day," Osiris said. "There are all kinds of fish in the Nile—perch, catfish, and there's also a fish called eel, with tender, delicious meat. The fishermen divide the fish they catch into several portions: one part for themselves and their families, one part sold to city residents, and one part delivered to the palace. You know what? Almost every morning our breakfast table has fresh Nile fish!"
"Great!" Seth jumped with excitement, "I love grilled fish the most!"
While the two brothers were chatting, a cool morning breeze passed by, carrying a fragrance mixing earth and grass. Osiris took a deep breath, a satisfied expression appearing on his face.
"Did you smell it, Seth?" Osiris said, "This is the scent of the Nile."
Seth sniffed hard: "What scent? I only smell the aroma of grilled fish!"
Osiris shook his head and smiled, but he wasn't angry. He knew his brother was still young and had much to learn. But that was okay, because he believed that one day, Seth would also come to truly understand the significance of the Nile to the Egyptian people, just as he did.
Just as the two brothers were about to go downstairs for breakfast, a familiar figure appeared on the balcony. It was their father—the Pharaoh of Egypt, His Majesty Ramesses. The pharaoh was tall, wearing a blue crown symbolizing pharaonic authority, holding a curved staff called the "Was scepter." A kind smile was on his face, and his eyes sparkled with wisdom.
"Children, good morning," the pharaoh said gently. "Today is a beautiful day. Would you like to go with Father to see the farmers plowing?"
" Wonderful!" Seth nearly jumped for joy, "I've wanted to go for a long time!"
Osiris also nodded happily. He knew that every year, after the Nile flood season, the pharaoh personally inspected the farmland to see whether the river's silt had brought enough fertilizer to the land. This was a very important tradition, because the Nile's flood was not only a disaster but also a gift from the gods.
Breakfast was quickly finished—fresh Nile fish, roasted bread, dates, and milk porridge seasoned with honey. After breakfast, the pharaoh brought the two children and a group of attendants, sailing downstream on a magnificently decorated large boat. The hull was painted bright white, the bow carved with a ram's head—the symbol of the Nile god. Golden sail
