The Contemporary Revival of Divination Ethics: Necessity, Crises, and Research Paradigms
Chapter 1: The Contemporary Revival of Divination Ethics — Necessity, Crises, and Research Paradigms
In a disenchanted modern society, in which scientific rationality has already explained the causes of eclipses, the mechanisms of disease, and the laws of tides, why do hundreds of millions of people still regularly seek guidance from tarot cards, the *Yijing*, and astrology? More crucially, when divination practice continues to expand at a market scale exceeding ten billion US dollars annually (the US spiritual consumer market alone surpassed 22 billion dollars in 2023, according to Pew Research Center estimates), are we able — and ought we — to establish ethical boundaries for this ancient human activity? This dual inquiry constitutes the most fundamental scholarly starting point of this book: when divination moves from peripheral belief to daily life, and from the label of superstition to being reconceived as a reflective tool, how can ethics afford to be absent?
The task of this chapter is neither to defend divination nor to reiterate its falsity, but rather to establish, along two dimensions simultaneously — scholarly legitimacy and practical necessity — the legitimate foundation of divination ethics as a field of inquiry. We shall argue that in an era that claims to have "overcome" the notion of fate, raising anew the question of "responsible divination" is precisely an intrinsic demand of modernity's self-reflection, rather than a residual echo of pre-modern superstition.

1.1 The Triple Paradigm Shift in Divination Studies: From "Primitive Thought" to "Boundary Practice"
The position of divination in modern academic history resembles a mirror reflecting the migration of epistemological preferences within the social sciences themselves. Understanding this migration is the prerequisite for any serious study of divination ethics.
1.1.1 Phase One: The "Pseudo-Science" Label under the Disenchantment Narrative (Late 19th — Mid-20th Century)
In the tradition of modern sociology founded by Émile Durkheim and Max Weber, "disenchantment" (*Entzauberung*) became the central concept describing the essential features of modern society. In his 1919 lecture "Science as a Vocation" (*Wissenschaft als Beruf*), Weber clearly proposed that modern people no longer — and cannot — intervene in the world's operation through magical or mysterious means as their predecessors did; rationalization has "disenchanted" the world. Within this narrative framework, divination was naturally classified as a "pre-modern remnant": a dark corner where rationality had not yet fully penetrated, a cognitive fossil from humanity's childhood.
The representative position of this phase was the three-stage evolutionary theory of "magic-religion-science" advanced by Edward Burnett Tylor and James George Frazer. In *Primitive Culture* (1871), Tylor regarded divination as a direct product of "animism" — the "primitive mentality" through which humanity attempted to achieve its goals by manipulating or interpreting supernatural forces. The deep presupposition of this judgment was that with scientific progress, divination would naturally perish, just as the pre-modern worldview to which it was attached would naturally perish.
However, reducing divination to "pseudo-science" or "erroneous cognition" involves a fundamental category mistake: it uses modern scientific standards to judge a cultural practice that inherently belongs to a different category. Divination has never operated in the manner of "scientific prediction" — any comparison of its truth or falsity with weather forecasting or medical diagnosis distorts in advance the operational logic of divination practice itself. This category misplacement is precisely the fundamental driving force behind the subsequent paradigm shift in divination studies.
1.1.2 Phase Two: The Anthropological Interpretation as a "Web of Meaning" (Mid-20th — Late 20th Century)
From the 1940s to the 1960s, anthropologists' fieldwork in African and Asian societies gave rise to the first major paradigm shift in divination studies. The key figure in this shift was Edward Evans-Pritchard.
In 1937, Evans-Pritchard published *Witchcraft, Oracles and Magic Among the Azande*, an ethnographic classic that offered an entirely new way of understanding divination. He meticulously recorded how the Azande people used the "benge oracle" — a potent poison derived from a specific plant, administered to chickens, whose death or survival would determine the right or wrong of a matter. To Western rationalists, this appeared to be a typical "primitive superstition" devoid of cognitive value. Yet Evans-Pritchard refused to make such a judgment. He proposed that Azande divination is not a proposition about natural causation but rather a socio-psychological mechanism — it provides authoritative adjudication in social conflicts, a container of meaning in psychological anxiety, and a tool for restoration in moral disorder.
More profoundly, Evans-Pritchard revealed the internal logical self-consistency of the Azande divination system: when divination results contradicted social experience, the Azande did not simply abandon divination but instead sought reasons within a secondary interpretive framework (for instance, "the effect of the poison was countered by the spell of a stronger sorcerer"). These "Aristotelian secondary explanations" bear a structurally striking similarity to the theoretical patching that occurs in Western scientific history when faced with anomalies — an observation later partially confirmed by the philosophy of science of Thomas Kuhn and Imre Lakatos.
