Imagine a remote village in southern Sweden, with snow falling outside and a warm fire crackling inside. A little boy sits by the fire, holding an old metal box, his eyes sparkling with something special. This boy's name was Ingvar Kamprad, and inside that old box were matches and a tiny dream.
On March 30, 1926, Ingvar was born in the Åmålt region of southern Sweden. This was a true countryside village with no tall buildings or bustling shopping centers—only endless forests and occasional horse-drawn carriages passing by. Ingvar's home was an ordinary wooden house, no different from others in the village. But it was from this ordinary place that an extraordinary person would emerge.
Little Ingvar was different from other children from an early age. While other kids were playing with mud and sticks, he was already thinking about problems. His young mind was always filled with curious questions: Why did neighbors have to travel so far to buy things? Why were some things so expensive? Why couldn't there be a better way?
Ingvar was five years old when a chance opportunity changed his life. One day, his father took him to the nearby town to buy things. In the general store, little Ingvar noticed the price of a box of matches—one krona. In those days, one krona was quite a lot of money for an ordinary family.
Little Ingvar went home and began to think. He knew many people in the village needed matches because matches were a necessity in every household back then. But why did matches have to be so expensive? It must be because they had to be transported from far away, passing through several layers of merchants, each one wanting to make a profit, so the price kept getting higher and higher.
"If I could buy directly from cheaper places and sell directly to village people, wouldn't it be much cheaper?" thought five-year-old Ingvar to himself. This simple idea later became known as the "direct sales" business model—cutting out middlemen so consumers get cheaper prices.
Five-year-old Ingvar immediately took action. Using pocket money his father gave him, he bought some matches from a wholesaler at a lower price, then rode his bicycle around the village selling door-to-door. His matches were cheaper than the town store, but he still made a tiny profit. From his first business venture, Ingvar earned a few öre.
Little Ingvar quickly discovered an important secret: the most important thing in business is not what you want to sell, but what others need. Many adults never understand this principle their whole lives, but a six-year-old boy figured it out on his own.
His second business venture was selling seeds. Back then, Swedish farmers needed to buy various seeds for planting crops, but going to the town seed shop took both time and money. Ingvar thought, if I could deliver seeds right to farmers' doorsteps, they would surely be happy.
So he rode his bicycle again for a new business. This time, he didn't just circle around the village but rode to farther-away farms. He discovered that different farmers needed different seeds—some needed wheat seeds, some barley seeds, and others grass seeds. Little Ingvar began to keep records of each person's needs, then bring what they needed next time he came.
This approach has a very professional name today, called "Customer Relationship Management," or CRM for short. Simply put, it's understanding each customer's unique needs and then providing targeted services. Although Ingvar didn't know these professional terms, he practiced this principle in his own way.
In Ingvar's entrepreneurial story, the bicycle played a very important role. That old bicycle carried a little boy and his dreams across the fields and countryside of Sweden.
Ingvar's first bicycle was a gift from his father. When most children treated bicycles as toys, Ingvar turned his into a mobile shop. He made a simple shelf on the back of his bicycle using wooden boxes and placed the goods he wanted to sell inside. This way, his "mobile store" could open for business anytime and everywhere he went.
Later, as his business grew bigger, Ingvar needed to transport more goods. An ordinary bicycle was no longer enough. So he came up with an idea: use a child's bicycle to transport small goods—though he could carry less each time, the cost was also lower; when there were more goods, he would find other ways to transport them. This ability to adapt flexibly is also an important quality for entrepreneurs.
By the time Ingvar was a teenager, his business was already quite substantial. He not only sold matches and seeds but also began selling other goods—watches, pencils, drawing paper, and even fish. He would adjust his product variety according to seasonal changes and customer needs.
But doing business was never smooth sailing. Once, Ingvar bought a batch of watches from a wholesaler, thinking he could make a profit, only to discover the watches had quality problems. After selling a few, customers returned them. This failure cost young Ingvar a lot of money and taught him an important lesson: before doing business, you must carefully inspect product quality.
Another time, he tried importing goods from Poland to Sweden, wanting to profit from the price difference between the two countries. The idea itself was good, but practical implementation faced many difficulties—language barriers, transportation inconveniences, complex customs procedures, and so on. Although this attempt wasn't entirely successful, Ingvar gained valuable international trade experience from it, laying the foundation for building a global enterprise later on.
- **I** = Ingvar(英格瓦,创始人名字)
- **
