What is Design?
Kids, did you know that when you open your eyes in the morning and see the blue sky, white clouds, and the sun rising from the east—all of this looks so natural and beautiful, but it's actually all related to "design"!
Design sounds like a very complex word, like something deeply profound in the adult world. But actually, design is just a kind of magic that makes things "look better and work better."
Imagine you have a box of crayons all tangled up in a mess. Can you quickly find the red crayon you want? It would definitely be hard, right? But if you arrange the crayons neatly by color, you can see where the red is at a glance. Isn't that much more convenient? That's design at work!
Design is like putting beautiful clothes on things, making them not only look nice but also easier to use. Just like we wear nice clothes when we go out every day, design puts orderly and beautiful "clothes" on everything—books, desks, phones, toys.
Look Around: Where is Design?
Look around and direct your gaze to our room.
Secrets on the Bookshelf
Look, isn't the bookshelf in your room a great example? Those books are neatly arranged together, like rows of little soldiers. Some book spines face outward so you can see the book titles and cover pictures; some books are placed horizontally, with your little dolls sitting on top.
If you knock down all the books on the shelf and pile them up in a mess, can you quickly find the story you want to read? You'd probably have to search for a long, long time. But if each book has its own place, arranged from tall to short or by color, doesn't it look both neat and beautiful? This is layout design—arranging the positions of things so they look good and are easy to find.
Magic in Your Phone
Now let's look at the tablet in your hands or Mom and Dad's phone. Have you ever wondered why the icons on the phone screen are arranged that way? Why is the WeChat icon green, and why do game icons have cute little figures?
These are all carefully designed by designers! They spend a lot of time thinking: which apps do we use every day (like phone, messages)? They put those in the most visible positions. Which apps do we only use occasionally (like weather, calculator)? They put those a bit further away. This kind of arrangement is part of layout design.
The Classroom Bulletin Board
The bulletin board at your school is also a masterpiece of design! Think about it—why are the teacher's notices always posted at the top? Because that's the most visible spot, and everyone can see them as soon as they walk in. Why do some notices have cute stickers or colorful borders next to them? Because that can attract your attention and make you more curious to take a look.
If all the notices were posted in a messy pile without any difference in size or color coordination, what would that look like? It might make people feel dizzy and unsure which one to look at first. But with good design, it's like putting the information in an orderly uniform—you can immediately see which ones are most important and which are secondary.
The Art of Comparison: Messy vs. Neat
Now, let's do a little experiment—an experiment only designers would do: comparing "messy" and "neat" side by side.
The Messy Look
Photos by MichaelGaida on Pixabay
The Neat Look
Which One Do You Like Better?
Meet the Design Sprites: The Squares
All right, now it's time to introduce the most important characters in this book—our adorable design sprites!
他们有着各种各样的颜色:红色的热情活泼,蓝色的冷静聪明,绿色的和平友善,黄色的快乐开朗……They are called "The Squares," a group of little sprites living in the Design Kingdom. The Squares look nice and square, just like the squares we use when drawing. They come in all kinds of colors: red for passion and liveliness, blue for calmness and intelligence, green for peace and friendliness, yellow for happiness and cheerfulness...
Little Red Square: The Organization Master
她总是说:「每一样东西都应该有它自己的家!」She's "Little Red," and I like to keep things neat and tidy!" Kids, did you know that Little Red is the neatest one in the Square family. She always says: "Everything should have its own home!"
她一进门就发现小熊的房间乱得一塌糊涂:玩具扔得到处都是,书本堆成小山,衣服挂在吊灯上(天哪,吊灯!)Little Red went to play at Little Bear's house one day. When she walked in the door, she found Little Bear's room was a total mess: toys scattered everywhere, books stacked into little mountains, clothes hanging from the lamp (Oh my, the lamp!)
说着,她就用自己的红色方块身体,在小熊房间里「规划」起来——这里放书架,这里放玩具箱,这里挂衣服……Within minutes, Little Red didn't嫌弃小熊, but smiled and said: "Little Bear, let me teach you some magic!" As she spoke, she used her little red square body to "plan" things out in Little Bear's room—put the bookshelf here, the toy box there, hang clothes here...
Little Blue Square: The Space Magician
I'm "Little Blue," and I like studying how to place things just right!" Little Blue is the smartest one in the Square family, and he loves thinking about space problems.
Little Blue discovered an interesting secret: if you place things too close together, they "fight
