Chapter 1: The Conference Room on That Rainy Night: A Manager's Darkest Moment
---
The rain had been falling for three consecutive days. This was the third year since Li Ming joined this rapidly growing tech company as the R&D Director, and the forty-seventh day of his consecutive overtime work. When he pushed open the conference room door, the clock on the wall pointed to 7:45 PM. The storm outside battered the glass, like countless hands frantically pounding, trying to break through this membrane.
He took a deep breath and walked toward the main seat in front of the projector. Tonight was the quarterly project progress meeting—he had prepared for it for an entire week. The PowerPoint had thirty-seven slides, data accurate to two decimal places, and every table and chart had been carefully designed. For every possible question, he had rehearsed his response at least three times. He believed he had done everything possible to prepare.
However, from the moment the first slide appeared, he sensed something was wrong.
The conference room held eight people—the most important project leaders and core engineers under his supervision. Usually, when these people sat together, there would be whispered conversations, occasional teasing, people scribbling notes rapidly. But tonight, the entire room was as silent as a tomb. No one spoke, no one looked up, no one even shifted in their seat. They simply sat there, like soldiers waiting for inspection, their eyes hollow and distant.
"Ahem," Li Ming cleared his throat, trying to break this suffocating silence. "Let's begin. First, I want to thank everyone for your hard work during this time—"
He noticed Zhang Lei—his most valued technical expert and the key presenter for tonight—merely nodding slightly, without any expression. Zhang Lei's fingers tapped unconsciously on the desk, a small gesture he only made when anxious. When Zhang Lei had joined the company three years ago, he had been the most vocal person in this conference room, always throwing out eye-opening ideas at every meeting. Now, his eyes were fixed on the desk, as if there was something more important on its surface than this meeting.
Li Ming flipped to the next slide: "According to current progress, our new product development project is approximately 65% complete. According to the original plan, we should enter the internal testing phase in two weeks, but—"
"I'm sorry, Mr. Li," Zhang Lei suddenly interrupted his presentation, his voice flat as if stating a fact unrelated to himself, "I have a different view regarding the internal testing timeline."
Li Ming's heart sank. Zhang Lei had never raised any objections before the meeting; he had assumed everything was proceeding as planned. "Please go ahead," he managed to stay composed.
"Based on our team's assessment, the accumulation of technical debt has exceeded controllable levels. If we forcibly enter the internal testing phase in two weeks, quality risks will increase by at least 40%." Zhang Lei's tone was calm and professional. "I'm not making excuses. I just feel that as technical personnel, I have the responsibility to surface these risks."
Li Ming stared at the carefully designed progress charts on the screen, suddenly feeling dizzy. Those numbers looked so perfect—every line, every percentage had been verified repeatedly. But right now, they felt like carefully packaged lies, glittering with false promises under the conference room lights.
He turned to his colleagues: "What do the rest of you think? Are there similar concerns?"
Silence. A long, suffocating silence.
Sitting in the corner, Wang Fang—a senior engineer promoted just last year—opened her mouth as if to speak, then closed it again. She lowered her head and began mindlessly swiping through her phone screen. In past projects, Wang Fang had been the first person to raise her hand in opposition to unreasonable plans.
The clock in the conference room ticked away, seemingly mocking everything. Li Ming suddenly realized that this meeting he thought he had carefully prepared was turning into a complete failure. He looked around, trying to find a pair of eyes willing to meet his gaze, but everyone skillfully avoided his eyes.
"If there are no other issues," Li Ming heard himself say, "then let's conclude today's meeting here. Each team continues as originally planned. Feel free to communicate anytime if there are problems."
No one responded.
When the last person left the conference room, Li Ming stood alone, staring at the empty chairs and scattered water bottles. The projector still glowed, its blue light spreading across the thirty-seven slides he had meticulously prepared. He suddenly felt an unprecedented exhaustion—not physical fatigue, but a hollow feeling rising from deep within his heart.
Three years ago, when he was promoted to department director, he had told himself resolutely: I will lead this team to create miracles. He developed the most detailed plans, established the most rigorous processes, and demanded the highest standards from everyone. He believed that as long as he worked hard enough and was rigorous enough, he could build an invincible team.
However, at this moment, those eight people sitting across from him—each carefully selected top talent—felt like eight strangers. Eight hours ago, they had been arguing about a technical issue in the WeChat group, but now, sitting in the conference room, they wouldn't even say an extra word.

The subway traveled through the tunnel, darkness stretching endlessly outside the window. Li Ming leaned against the cold metal handrail, watching his reflection in the glass. The face in the glass looked tired and confused, fine lines had appeared at the corners of his eyes without his noticing. He suddenly remembered that morning, when his six-year-old daughter had tugged at his sleeve and asked, "Daddy, when can you play LEGO with me?"
What had he answered then? Something like "Maybe next week, Daddy's been very busy lately." But he knew in his heart that this "next week" had become countless "next weeks," and the half-assembled LEGO city still sat alone
