Chengdu: A City of Magic
Imagine putting on a pair of magic glasses that let you see everything happening in a city, 24 hours a day. What do you think you'd see?
Let's point our magical camera at Chengdu, a city in southwest China.
At seven in the morning, as the sun rises over the ancient city wall near Tianfu Square, grandpas are already seated in teahouses at People's Park. They leisurely lift their covered-bowl teas and chat with old friends about last night's Sichuan opera. Warm steam rises gently in the teahouse, and the air carries the sweet fragrance of jasmine flowers.
Just around the corner from this old teahouse street, a glittering new building has just opened its doors. It's a robot restaurant that opened last year! Walk through the entrance, and a white robot will politely bow and greet you. Its "belly" holds dozens of different dishes. You just tap on the touch screen to place your order, and the robot slides along its track to the kitchen, passing your order to the chef. Fifteen minutes later, fragrant twice-cooked pork and kung pao chicken arrive at your table, delivered by another robot.
But the magical things don't stop there!
Xiao Ming is a ten-year-old Chengdu boy. Lately, he's discovered something incredibly strange. He's lived in Chengdu for ten whole years, but it seems like his hometown is performing magic tricks every single day.
Last summer vacation, Xiao Ming's uncle who works in America came home to visit. The uncle hadn't returned for five years. He sat in a taxi, opened WeChat video call on his phone, and his wife and cousin in America could actually see Chengdu's night scenery clearly! The 339 TV Tower lights flickered, Chunxi Road's neon signs glowed in all colors, and stylish young people walked past Taikoo Li. His auntie exclaimed through the video: "Wow! Chengdu's night view is so beautiful! Even more bustling than New York!"
But Xiao Ming's grandma doesn't quite understand all this high technology. She's seventy-five years old and her favorite thing to do is watch traditional ear-cleaning craftsmen perform at Kuanzhai Alley. Grandma says: "Ear-cleaning is an old Chengdu craft. I watched these performances when I was a child. A thin bamboo stick, gently inserted into the ear, tickling and making you so comfortable you want to fall asleep."
What amazes Xiao Ming most is this: while grandma gets her ears cleaned, the craftsman actually pulls out his phone and asks grandma to scan a QR code to pay! "WeChat or Alipay?" the craftsman asks. Grandma skillfully takes out her phone, opens WeChat, and says, "WeChat, scan this."
Xiao Ming watches this scene and can't help but burst out laughing. He thinks to himself: This is so interesting! Grandma is enjoying a traditional craft that's been around for hundreds of years, while simultaneously using the most modern mobile payment. Isn't this just like the saying "drinking tea while sending emails"?
Xiao Ming shares this discovery with his good friend Xiao Yu. Xiao Yu is an eight-year-old girl. After thinking for a moment, she says: "I think Chengdu is like a magician! It performs two kinds of magic at the same time—one is slow magic, making people comfortable and relaxed; the other is fast magic, shocking people so much their jaws drop!"
Xiao Ming's dad is an urban planner. Hearing the children's discussion, he laughs and says: "You're both right. Chengdu really is a special city. You know what? In Chengdu, you can drink tea in a century-old teahouse in the morning and work at a high-tech company in the afternoon; you can eat the most traditional Sichuan dishes in old alleyways and buy the world's trendiest limited-edition sneakers at Taikoo Li."
"But Dad," Xiao Ming asks, "why can Chengdu be both slow and fast? Isn't that contradictory? It's like saying one person can't walk fast and slow at the same time, right?"
That's a really good question! And it's the central question we'll explore throughout this entire book.
Let's put on Xiao Ming's "magic glasses" together and discover what secrets this "city of magic" is hiding!

Chengdu's Two Faces: The City Where Ancient Meets Modern
When you first arrive in Chengdu, you might have a strange feeling—as if you've stepped into two different worlds at the same time.
In some corners of the city, time seems to move particularly slowly. Old houses with blue bricks and gray tiles stand quietly, with red lanterns hanging beneath their eaves. In narrow alleyways, grandpas sit together playing chess, occasionally shouting "Check!" The air carries the fragrance of spicy hot pot, mixed with the jasmine tea aroma drifting from teahouses.
But turn a corner, and you discover another Chengdu. Skyscrapers reaching toward the heavens glisten in the sunlight, their glass walls reflecting blue skies and white clouds. Unmanned subway trains rush through underground tunnels, and 5G signals cover every corner of the city. Programmers type code in fancy office buildings while scientists in AI laboratories develop the latest robots.
These two scenes appear in the same city yet feel completely natural together. It's like a magician wearing two hats at once—one is the mysterious hat of an ancient sorcerer, and the other is the experimental hat of a modern scientist.
This "ancient yet modern" characteristic of Chengdu actually has deep historical roots. Let's rewind time by over a thousand years.
As early as the Three Kingdoms period, Chengdu was the capital of the Shu Kingdom. Zhuge Liang's thatched cottage stood near Wuhou Shrine in the western part of the city. Jinguangcheng bustled with traffic and crowds. Back then, Chengdu was already the most prosperous city in the southwest region. Shu brocade and Shu embroidery traveled from here to the world, and Sichuan cuisine's fame spread far and wide.
For over two thousand years, Chengdu's name has never changed ("Chengdu" means "becoming a city of success"), but its appearance has kept changing. Like a person who grows from a baby to a schoolchild to an adult—the name stays the same, but their abilities keep growing.
This wisdom of "changing yet constant" is precisely the s
