Industrial Internet and the Paradigm Shift of Smart Manufacturing
Industrial Internet and the Paradigm Shift of Smart Manufacturing
The evolution of human civilization is, in a profound sense, a history of technology-driven industrial transformation. From the invention of the steam engine that sparked the First Industrial Revolution in the 18th century, to electrification that propelled the Second Industrial Revolution in the early 20th century, and then to the Third Industrial Revolution catalyzed by computer and automation technologies in the mid-20th century, each technological leap has deeply reshaped the competitive landscape of global manufacturing[^1]. Today, we stand at the historical juncture of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, where technologies such as Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Big Data serve as core driving forces, fundamentally reconstructing the modes of production, organizational forms, and value creation patterns in manufacturing.
Industrial Internet, as a crucial carrier and implementation pathway for the Fourth Industrial Revolution, is increasingly becoming the core focus for global manufacturing transformation and upgrading. According to General Electric (GE), Industrial Internet refers to "the integration of intelligent machines, advanced analytics, and people at work," whose essence lies in achieving organic fusion between the physical and digital worlds through the synergistic effects of three key elements: Connectivity, Intelligence, and Insight[^2]. The introduction of this concept marks the comprehensive evolution of manufacturing from traditional stages of mechanization, electrification, and informatization toward intelligentization, networking, and servitization.
This chapter aims to systematically examine how Industrial Internet reshapes the value chain structure and competitive logic of manufacturing from a macroscopic perspective. We will first trace the technological evolution of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, deeply analyzing the connotation and extension of Industrial Internet and its essential differences from Consumer Internet; then explore the academic origins and technical characteristics of core concepts such as CPS and Industry 4.0, revealing their underlying theoretical and practical logic; subsequently, using Porter's Value Chain Model, analyze the impact mechanism of digital transformation on enterprise competitive advantage; finally, through case studies of leading companies such as GE and Siemens, reveal the overall trends and regional characteristics of global manufacturing digital transformation. Through this systematic analysis, we hope to construct a theoretical framework and analytical tools for readers to understand intelligent manufacturing transformation.
To deeply understand the ongoing transformation in manufacturing, we must first establish an accurate understanding of the essential characteristics of each industrial revolution. Economic historians typically divide industrial revolutions into four stages, each with its own landmark technological breakthroughs and corresponding transformations in production organization models[^3].
The First Industrial Revolution (approximately 1760-1840) took the invention and widespread application of steam engines as its core hallmark, achieving a fundamental transformation from manual production to mechanized production. During this stage, labor-intensive industries such as textiles and mining took the lead in completing mechanization, the factory system was established, and human society began its transition from agricultural civilization to industrial civilization. Steam power replaced human and animal labor, freeing production from strict geographical and natural constraints, making large-scale production possible. The invention of railways and steamships thoroughly transformed the transportation of goods, establishing unified domestic markets and promoting the germination of global trade.
The Second Industrial Revolution (approximately 1870-1914) was driven by the widespread application of electricity and the invention of internal combustion engines. During this period, petroleum became an important energy carrier, the chemical industry flourished, and the steel industry achieved technological leaps. Henry Ford's invention of the moving assembly line propelled the Second Industrial Revolution to its peak, transforming automobiles from luxury goods into mass consumer products and greatly expanding the boundaries of the global consumer market[^4]. During this stage, multinational corporations emerged, standardized production combined with Taylor's scientific management principles, forming a paradigm of large-scale, standardized production. Industrialized countries represented by the United States and Germany established complete industrial systems, forming the basic organizational structure of manufacturing that we are familiar with today.
The Third Industrial Revolution (approximately 1950-2000) took the invention and application of electronic computers, integrated circuits, and Internet technologies as its core characteristics. The invention of the transistor (1947) and the emergence of integrated circuits (1958) laid the hardware foundation for the digital revolution, while the commercial application of the Internet (1990s) thoroughly transformed how information spread and how business operated. The widespread application of automation technology, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems greatly improved production efficiency and flexibility in manufacturing[^5]. During this stage, globalization accelerated, Supply Chain Management (SCM) and ERP systems became core supports for enterprise operations, and the international division of labor system gradually took shape.
The Fourth Industrial Revolution, also known as Industry 4.0, is not a breakthrough in a single technology but rather the convergence innovation and collaborative application of multiple emerging technologies. This concept was first formally proposed by the German governm
