Imagine this: It's the year 490 BC, and a Greek soldier named Pheidippides (菲迪皮茨) is running as fast as his legs can carry him. He's running from the battlefield of Marathon (马拉松平原) to the city of Athens (雅典), a distance of about 40 kilometers (约40公里). Why? Because the Greeks just won a great battle against the Persians (波斯人), and he must bring this wonderful news to his people. His heart is pounding with excitement and pride.
When Pheidippides finally reached the city square, he gathered all his strength and shouted: "Niki! Nikamen!" which means "Victory! We are victorious!" The people cheered and celebrated. But the brave soldier had given everything he had. He collapsed on the ground, exhausted beyond measure. Pheidippides had completed the most important run of his life, and he would become a legend forever.
This is how the marathon (马拉松) was born. The word "marathon" comes from the Greek word for the place where this great event happened. And for over 2,500 years, people have been running marathons to remember this brave soldier and his incredible dedication
In 1896, the first modern Olympic Games (现代奥林匹克运动会) were held in Athens, the very city Pheidippides ran to. The organizers thought it would be wonderful to include a marathon race to honor the ancient Greek tradition. And so, the modern marathon was born!
At those first Olympics, a Greek shepherd farmer named Spyridon Louis (斯皮里东·路易斯) won the marathon. He was not a professional athlete—he worked on a farm and sometimes delivered water to people in his village. But he loved to run, and he ran all the way to Olympic glory When he won, the entire stadium went wild with joy. Even today, Greeks consider Louis one of their greatest heroes.
Since then, the marathon has become one of the most famous events in the Olympic Games. Athletes from all over the world dream of running in the Olympic marathon. And ordinary people—people like your parents, teachers, and maybe even you one day—also run marathons in cities around the world!
Now, you might be wondering: how long is a marathon exactly? Let's learn about the different distances
(Full Marathon / 42.195 kilometers) A standard full marathon is 42.195 kilometers, or about 26.2 miles. This is the distance run in the Olympic Games and most major city marathons. If you walk at a normal pace, it would take you about 8-9 hours to cover this distance. If you run it, most people take between 3-6 hours. Elite (精英) runners—those who are the very best—can finish in just over 2 hours!
The number 42.195 km might seem like a strange one. Why not a round number? Here's the story: In 1908, the Olympic marathon in London was set to start at Windsor Castle (温莎城堡) and finish at the Olympic Stadium. The distance was measured as 26 miles 385 yards (26英里385码). Someone decided this would be exactly 42.195 kilometers. Later, this distance became the official marathon distance for all Olympic Games and major marathons. So that "strange" number actually has a royal history!
(Half Marathon / 21.0975 kilometers) "Semi" means half, so a half marathon is exactly half the distance of a full marathon: 21.0975 kilometers, or about 13.1 miles. This is a very popular distance because it's challenging but more achievable for many people. Many runners start with a half marathon before attempting a full marathon.
(10K / 10 kilometers) A 10K is 10 kilometers, or about 6.2 miles. This is a great distance for building running fitness Many fun runs and charity events (慈善活动) use this distance. For a child, a 10K is a real achievement!
(5K / 5 kilometers) A 5K is 5 kilometers, or about 3.1 miles. This is the perfect starter distance for young runners. It's short enough that most healthy kids can complete it, but long enough to feel like a real accomplishment (成就感). Many schools organize 5K runs, and they're a fantastic way to get started with running!
Here's a helpful comparison to understand these distances better:
