It was a late autumn evening when Henri Lefebvre walked along the cobblestone streets of Paris's Left Bank. The setting sun painted the white Sacré-Cœur Basilica on Montmartre in pale gold, while faint jazz music drifted from a nearby café. The French philosopher was not focused on the scenery before him—he was contemplating a seemingly simple yet infinitely complex question: when we traverse city streets, navigate architectural labyrinths, and move through flowing crowds, what exactly are we passing through?
For most pedestrians, the city is mere backdrop, a stage upon which life unfolds. They rush past without realizing that every stone beneath their feet, every eaves overhead, every wall beside them, speaks to the deep structures of human society. The bricks and concrete of cities are not neutral material vessels; they are congealed social relations, time made spatial, human narratives written in material form.
Lefebvre's theory of "the production of space," developed in his later years, provided us with a key to understanding cities. He argued that space is not a pre-existing void awaiting的事物填充;相反,空间是被生产出来的,是社会过程的物质化结果。
The metaphor of cities as text is not merely rhetorical flourish but carries profound theoretical implications. When we speak of cities as texts, several layers of meaning emerge.
First, cities possess readability. Just as written texts record an author's thoughts, urban spaces document society's organizing principles, power relations, and cultural values. A city built during colonial periods often preserves material traces of the power asymmetry between colonizer and colonized in its street layouts, plaza arrangements, and architectural styles. By decoding these spatial texts, we can "read" the social structures embedded within them.
Second, urban texts are polyphonic. A great literary work contains multiple voices and perspectives; urban spatial texts are similarly complex. In the same city, elite neighborhoods and slums, traditional communities and emerging districts, indigenous settlements and new immigrant quarters each tell different stories, reflecting varied experiences and interests. One task of urban sociology is precisely to listen to these different voices, revealing the tensions and interactions among them.
Third, urban texts are continuously rewritten. As literary works are reinterpreted across historical periods, urban spatial texts undergo constant revision. When an industrial zone transforms into an arts district, when a commercial street evolves into a tourist destination, when a shantytown is razed and replaced by skyscrapers—these represent processes of urban text revision. The sociologist's work involves tracing the dynamic mechanisms behind such revisions, understanding who has the power to rewrite, why they do so, and how rewrites affect residents' lives.
To understand contemporary urban sociology's theoretical landscape, we must trace this discipline's foundational period. In the early 20th century, the University of Chicago's sociology department produced a remarkable group of urban researchers whose work established the field's foundations and became known as the "Chicago School" for their distinctive theoretical orientation and research style.
The Chicago School's emergence was inseparable from America's rapid urbanization. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Chicago surged from a small town to America's second-largest city, attracting massive waves of European immigrants and domestic migrants. The city was simultaneously an industrial hub and a center of social problems—slums, crime, racial conflict, and urban decay intertwined, providing rich fieldwork for sociological research.
Robert Park was the Chicago School's guiding spirit. In 1914, during an incidental lecture, he encountered a research project from the Detroit City Conference, dedicating himself thereafter to urban sociology. Deeply influenced by classical ecology, Park attempted to apply concepts from natural ecosystems to urban studies. He proposed that cities are "organisms" where different communities and populations occupy specific "ecological niches," forming a natural order through competition and succession.
Ernest Burgess further developed Park's ecological ideas, proposing the famous "concentric zone model." This model divided urban space into five concentric zones: from the central business district outward,依次是转型区、工人住宅区、独立家庭住宅区、通勤者住宅区,以及最外围的郊区。
