The ocean, this blue world covering most of Earth's surface, has been closely connected to human destiny since ancient times. When we look at Earth from space, we see a blue planet—the ocean gives Earth its unique color and carries humanity's dreams of exploring the unknown world. Since ancient times, humans have developed countless connections with the ocean. From initial fear and reverence for the sea to later bravely sailing out to brave the waves, the story of humans and the ocean is full of legend. This is a long journey spanning tens of thousands of years, witnessing the awakening of human intelligence, technological progress, and an endless curiosity about the unknown world.
Part 1: The Blue Planet — The Relationship Between the Ocean and Earth
Earth, the beautiful planet we live on, is sometimes called the "blue planet" or "water planet." This name is well-deserved—the ocean covers about 71% of Earth's surface, reaching an astonishing 361 million square kilometers. If you could collect all the water on Earth's surface, it would form a huge water sphere about 1,385 kilometers in diameter. This number might be hard for children to imagine, so let's understand it in a more intuitive way: imagine your living room, if Earth were the size of a living room, then the ocean would be equivalent to the area of seven bedrooms! The vastness of the ocean is truly evident from this comparison.
From a geographical perspective, the ocean on Earth is not a single entity but is divided into several major oceans by continents and islands. According to standard geographical classifications, Earth's oceans are mainly divided into four oceans: the Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean, and Arctic Ocean. Among them, the Pacific Ocean is the largest, accounting for about 46% of Earth's total ocean area, which is even larger than all the land areas on Earth combined! The Atlantic Ocean follows closely, accounting for about 23%; the Indian Ocean accounts for about 20%; and the Arctic Ocean is the smallest, accounting for about 4%. In addition, there are some smaller sea areas, such as the Mediterranean Sea, Caribbean Sea, and Bering Sea, which are like gems on the crown of the ocean, scattered among the major oceans.
The importance of the ocean to Earth's ecosystem cannot be overstated. From an ecological perspective, the ocean produces about 50% of Earth's oxygen, mainly generated by planktonic plants through photosynthesis in the ocean. These tiny plants float on the sea surface, using sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water to produce oxygen, maintaining the operation of life on Earth. The ocean is also the largest carbon sink on Earth, absorbing about 30% of the carbon dioxide released by human activities, helping to regulate Earth's climate system. Without the ocean's regulatory function, Earth's temperature would be much higher than it is now, and life would be difficult to survive in such harsh conditions.
The ocean also contains abundant resources. According to ocean scientists' estimates, at least two million different species live in the ocean, many of which we have not yet discovered. The ocean provides an important food source for humanity, with about three billion people worldwide relying on seafood as their main protein source. From the perspective of transportation, about 90% of international trade relies on maritime transport, and the ocean is an important link connecting countries around the world. These facts all illustrate that the ocean is not only an important part of Earth's ecosystem but also a crucial support for the development of human civilization.
Part 2: Echoes of Antiquity — Early Human Relationships with the Ocean
The relationship between humans and the ocean can be traced back to hundreds of thousands of years ago in ancient times. During that period, our ancestors—early humans—had already begun to develop connections with the ocean. Archaeologists have discovered evidence of early humans using ocean resources all over the world, and these discoveries reveal the origins of the human-ocean relationship.
In ancient times, early humans' understanding of the ocean went through a process from fear to gradual understanding. Early humans mainly lived on land, and the ocean was a realm full of unknowns for them. The turbulent waves, unfathomable depths, and occasional tsunamis and storms all made early humans develop deep reverence for the ocean. In many ancient cultures, the ocean was endowed with mysterious powers and was regarded as a place where gods lived or a passage to another world.
However, as time went on, humans gradually discovered the benefits the ocean brought. The ocean provided abundant food resources—fish, shellfish, seaweed, etc., could all be used as food. Early humans in coastal areas began to collect these seafood products, forming the earliest "marine economy." Archaeologists discovered some sites on Flores Island in Indonesia dating back about one million years ago, which contained remnants of large amounts of seafood, indicating that humans at that time had already begun to consciously utilize marine resources.
Archaeological evidence shows that humans may have originated in Africa and gradually migrated to various parts of the world. In this long migration process, the ocean and coastlines played an important role. Anthropologists have found that early human migration routes often extended along coastlines because coastal areas provided abundant food resources and relatively stable living environments.
About 70,000 years ago, ancestors of modern humans began to spread outward from Africa. One important migration route was along the Indian Ocean coast, from Africa through the Arabian Peninsula and South Asia, all the way to Australia and the islands of Oceania. This route, called the "coastal migration hypothesis," suggests that early humans likely sailed between islands by building simple rafts or canoes, eventually reaching distant regions like Australia and New Guinea.
