A Sudden End to the Peaceful Days

The last weekend of August 1939 was peaceful across all of Europe. Sunshine fell on the streets of Berlin where children chased each other through the parks. Parisian cafés were filled with citizens leisurely chatting. In Warsaw's markets, vendors called out loudly to sell their goods. Along London's Thames, elderly people sat on benches feeding the ducks. No one knew that this seemingly ordinary summer would become the prelude to the darkest era in human history.
In the Polish capital of Warsaw, there was a little girl named Anna who had just celebrated her tenth birthday. Anna's favorite thing was sitting under the big oak tree in front of their house with her father every evening, listening to his tales of ancient Polish legends. Anna's father was a carpenter with incredibly skillful hands. He had made Anna a beautiful little wooden bed, with an eagle with spread wings carved on the headboard—the eagle was the symbol of Poland.
"Daddy, why does Poland love this eagle so much?" Anna once asked curiously.
Anna's father stroked his daughter's hair and smiled, "Because the eagle is the king of the sky! It is brave and strong, never afraid of storms. We Poles are like eagles—no matter what difficulties we face, we never bow our heads."
Anna nodded as if she understood, though she was still too young to grasp the deeper meaning in her father's words. In that late summer, all she knew was that the world was beautiful, the sunshine was warm, and she would always grow up happily among her father's stories.
But the world was not as simple as Anna imagined.

The Storm Brewing Over Europe
Let us rewind a few years to see how all of this began.
Let's go back several years to see how it all began. After World War I ended on November 11, 1918, Germany and the Allied powers signed an armistice in a railway carriage in France. That brutal war, which had killed over ten million people, was finally over. After the war, nations gathered together for a conference and signed the Treaty of Versailles. This treaty was like a harsh punishment: Germany was required to surrender vast amounts of land, troops, and money, and was forced to admit that they were the sole culprit of the war.
For a country, this felt like a child being blamed for something bad, then having all their toys taken away and being locked in a room. Germans felt particularly wronged and unfair, because in their view, this war was clearly everyone's responsibility—so why was only Germany being punished?
Around this time, a young man named Adolf Hitler began to rise on Germany's political stage. Hitler was born in Austria. When he was young, he wanted to be a painter but failed the art academy's entrance exam. During World War I, he served as a soldier and was even wounded on the battlefield. After the war, he joined the German Workers' Party, which he later reorganized into the Nazi Party we know today.
Hitler was especially good at talking. He was like a super salesperson, able to make the worst ideas sound wonderful. He told Germans, "You're not happy, not because of your own problems, but because other countries are bullying us! As long as we're strong enough, no one will dare bully us anymore!"
Many people believed Hitler's words. In 1933, Hitler became Germany's leader—the Chancellor. Just like a mischievous troublemaker suddenly becoming class president, the entire atmosphere of the classroom changed.
After Hitler came to power, he began secretly manufacturing weapons and building up his military. He ripped up the clauses in the Treaty of Versailles that limited Germany's military power, openly rearming and preparing for war. In 1936, Germany, Italy, and Japan formed an alliance called the Fascist Alliance. They were like three mischievous children deciding to band together to steal others' toys.
In 1938, Hitler began his so-called "expansion." First, he used threats to make Austria "join" Germany—like your neighbor suddenly bursting into your home and declaring that from now on you're family. Later that same year, Hitler set his sights on the Sudetenland region of Czechoslovakia, which was home to many Germans. Hitler claimed he wanted to "protect" these Germans and began threatening Czechoslovakia.
The leaders of Britain and France were afraid of war. They thought, "If we agree to some of Hitler's demands, maybe he won't start a war?" This thinking was like seeing someone in class start bullying others but being too afraid to stop them, instead saying, "Give him something, maybe he won't hit you."
In September 1938, British Prime Minister Chamberlain flew to Germany three times to negotiate with Hitler. Eventually, they signed the Munich Agreement, forcing Czechoslovakia to cede the Sudetenland to Germany. When Chamberlain returned to Britain, he proudly held up a piece of paper and announced, "I have brought back peace! Peace with honor!"
But when Anna's father heard this news, he sighed and said, "Open the door for a robber, and he'll only want more."

Lightning Strikes
In 1939, Hitler's appetite grew ever larger. He was no longer satisfied with just a bit of land—he wanted all of Czechoslovakia. In March, German troops marched into Prague, and Czechoslovakia as a nation simply vanished.
Now Britain and France finally realized something was wrong. They promised Poland: if Germany dared attack Poland, Britain and France would help protect Poland. But Hitler wasn't afraid at all. He thought Britain and France were cowards who wouldn't really fight.
In the last days of August 1939, the entire atmosphere across Europe was tense. Anna's family was packing, ready to move to the countryside at any moment—relatives lived there who could provide shelter. Anna didn't understand why the adults always looked worried; she just wanted to continue listening to her father's stories under the oak tree.
"Daddy, will the Germans really come?"
Anna's father was silent for a moment, then said gently, "Anna, remember this: no matter what happens, we are Polish, and our
