Welcome to the Digital World
Imagine this: It's a weekend morning, sunny and bright. Xiaoming opens his eyes, glances at the digital clock on his nightstand—seven-thirty in the morning. He stretches and thinks about what to do today.
"Mom, can I play games on the tablet for a while?" Xiaoming asks.
"Sure, but only for half an hour, okay?" Mom replies from the kitchen.
Excited, Xiaoming grabs his tablet and opens his favorite racing game. Cars zoom across the track on the screen, engines roaring. Just as he's about to cross the finish line, a message pops up: "Congratulations! You're our one-millionth visitor! Click here to claim your super skin!"
Xiaoming excitedly taps on it...
At that very moment, the tablet suddenly becomes very slow, and strange ads fill the screen. Xiaoming doesn't know what's happening. He feels scared and quickly closes the game.
"Mom! Mom! My tablet seems to be broken!" Xiaoming shouts anxiously.
Mom walks over, looks at the tablet, and says: "Don't worry, it's not broken. Xiaoming, do you know what just happened? Actually, this is a little cybersecurity story."
And so, Xiaoming began his cybersecurity adventure. And you, dear reader, will join Xiaoming on this magical journey through the digital world!
Our Magical Digital World
Have you ever wondered that the world we live in every day actually has two parts? One is the physical world we can see and touch—with blue skies and white clouds, flowers and trees, our homes, schools, and playgrounds. But the other part? We can't see it or touch it, yet it really exists. That's the digital world, also called cyberspace, or the internet world.
Just like the magical kingdoms in fairy tales, the digital world is also a wonderful place. In this world, we can chat with friends who are thousands of miles away, see beautiful scenery from around the world, learn endless knowledge, and play all kinds of fun games. This world has no boundaries or borders—as long as you have a device that can connect to the internet, you can enter this magical world.
What is the Internet?
The internet, in English called the Internet, you can imagine as a super magical highway. Not an ordinary cement road, not even a regular highway, but an information superhighway that we can't see or touch. On this highway, instead of cars, what travel are tiny little packets of information—just like letters in envelopes, these information packets carry all kinds of content from one place to another.
This magical information highway connects countless devices all around the world. What are devices? They're the things at your home or on your person that can connect to the internet—phones, tablets, computers, smartwatches, and even nowadays refrigerators, TVs, and watches might be connected. They all connect to this information superhighway, like little stations along this road.
When you use your tablet to send a message to a good friend saying "Let's play soccer tomorrow," your message gets broken into many tiny little packets. These packets race along the information superhighway at lightning speed, possibly passing through ten or even dozens of relay stations, finally arriving at your friend's phone. When the friend's phone receives these packets, it puts them back together into the complete message. That's the magical way the internet works!
What is a Website?
When we talk about websites, you must be familiar with them. Every day you probably open some websites—like your school's learning platform, cartoon websites you like to watch, or gaming websites. But what exactly is a website?
You can imagine a website as a book. This book isn't made of paper, but written in a special "webpage language." This book has many, many pages, and each page is a webpage. When you want to read this book, you need a special tool to open it, and that tool is called a browser. Common browsers include Chrome, Edge, Safari, and more—they're like magnifying glasses when reading, helping us see the content clearly.
Every website has a unique address, just like every home has its own house number. For example, if you want to visit your school's website, you might need to enter an address like www.school.edu.cn. When you type this address into your browser and press Enter, the browser travels along the information superhighway to find this book, then displays the content for you to see. Isn't that magical?
There are many types of websites. Some are news websites that let us learn about what's happening in the world; some are learning websites that help us acquire new knowledge; some are gaming websites for entertainment; and others are shopping websites where we can buy things we like. Imagine the internet as a humongous city, with countless buildings, and each building is a website. And you? You're a little explorer in this city!
What is a Server?
Okay, now we know that websites are like books. But where are these books stored? There must be somewhere to keep these books, right? The answer is servers.
A server, in English called Server, you can imagine as a super huge library. This library doesn't store physical books, but rather stores these website books. Real servers are special computers, designed to run for long periods almost without resting, and they can serve many people at the same time.
You might wonder, where is this super library built? Actually, they're distributed all around the world. Some are in very high mountains, where the cool climate helps servers "cool down"; some are deep underground, safe and stable,不怕 earthquakes and floods; and some are on floating ships... You heard that right, really on ships! These big ships dock by the sea, with servers inside, connected to the whole world through undersea cables.
There are many such "super libraries" around the world. When you want to visit a website, your information request flies along the internet to the nearest library, finds that book, and then the book's content flies back
