The Magical Eyes That Discovered the World
Eight-year-old Xiao Ming stood in his grandfather's dusty attic, looking around with wide, curious eyes. Sunlight streamed through the old window, painting golden columns in the air. Dust particles danced within those beams of light, like invisible sprites playing happily in the sunshine. The air was filled with the unique fragrance of old wood and aged books, inviting one to take a deep breath and savor this warmth that came from deep within time itself.
Xiao Ming was eight years old and a particularly curious child. His little brain was filled with one hundred thousand "whys"—Why is the sky blue? Why does the moon seem to follow people? Why is Grandpa's beard white while his own was black? Every day after school, he was like an tireless little question-robot, chasing after Mom and Dad with endless inquiries.
Today was a weekend, and his parents had gone to work overtime. Grandpa and Grandma had gone to the park to play chess and dance with their old friends. Xiao Ming was alone at home and felt a bit bored. He wandered here and there, and finally decided to explore the attic. Grandpa's attic was his secret base, filled with all kinds of strange and wonderful things—an old typewriter Grandpa had used in his youth, a hairpin that Grandma had worn at her wedding, and many, many black-and-white, yellowed old photographs.
Xiao Ming stood on tiptoe and gently pushed open the attic door. The door hinges made a "creak" sound, as if greeting him. "Hello there, Xiao Ming!" Xiao Ming imitated the sound of the hinges and said, "I've come to explore!"
The attic was darker than Xiao Ming had imagined. Sunlight squeezed in through the small window, illuminating only a small area. The other corners hid in shadows, as if holding countless secret stories. Xiao Ming took out the little flashlight his mom had bought him, and a beam of light shot into the darkness—"click," the flashlight turned on.
Just as Xiao Ming was looking around, his gaze was attracted by something in the corner. It was a square, black box with a somewhat worn surface and beautiful patterns carved on its edges. Next to the box lay something round and shiny, like a big eye.
Xiao Ming crouched down and carefully picked up the black box. The box was heavier than he had imagined, feeling cool to the touch with a substantial quality. He turned the box over and saw a small label on the back with several characters written on it: "Seagull Camera, 1978."
"1978?" Xiao Ming tilted his head, thinking, "That was a very, very long time ago, wasn't it? Grandpa was still young then!"
Xiao Ming then picked up the shiny round object and realized it was a glass lens. The lens was as smooth as a small mirror. Xiao Ming leaned in to look and could actually see his own reflection—the round, distorted face with big eyes, small nose and mouth, like a funny clown.
"How strange!" Xiao Ming couldn't help but laugh. "I've become a monster!"
Just then, a thin, crisp voice suddenly rang out: "Giggle! You're not a monster! The lens has magicked you!"
Xiao Ming was startled and almost dropped the camera to the floor. He widened his eyes and looked around: "Who? Who's talking?"
"Don't be scared, don't be scared! We're right here!" The voice sounded again, this time coming from inside the camera.
Xiao Ming pressed his ear against the camera and listened carefully. There really were people talking inside the camera, and not just one, but three!
你可以叫我GoGo,因为我总是说'Go!Go!Go!'
The first voice said: "My name is GoGo, the sprite who manages picture composition. You can call me GoGo, because I always say 'Go! Go! Go!' to remind people to move their feet and find the best shooting angle!"
The second voice said: "My name is Guangguang, the sprite who manages light. You can call me Guangguang, because light is guang—only with me, the world becomes bright!"
The third voice said: "My name is Caicai, the sprite who manages colors. You can call me Caicai, because color is cai—only with me, the world becomes colorful!"
Xiao Ming's jaw dropped in amazement: "There... there are sprites living in the camera?"
GoGo, Guangguang, and Caicai laughed together: "We're not living inside the camera! We're part of the camera's magic! When you take photos with the camera, the three of us are helping you work!"
Xiao Ming blinked his eyes, still not quite understanding: "But why have I never seen you before?"
Guangguang explained: "Because you haven't used this camera to take photos before! We only appear when we sense someone is about to take a picture. And not everyone can hear us talking! The fact that you can hear us means you have a destiny with this camera!"
Caicai added: "This camera has magical eyes! It can see many, many beautiful things in the world. The three of us are the magical guardians of this camera, helping it learn to 'see' the beautiful things in the world."
Xiao Ming held the camera in his hands and felt it had suddenly become magical. He gently caressed the camera's shell and asked: "Can you teach me how to use this camera? I want to learn to take photos too!"
GoGo was the first to jump out: "Of course! But learning photography isn't easy, you know! You have to learn many skills first!"
Guangguang followed: "Yes, yes! Light is the most important thing in photography! Without light, you can't see anything, and the camera can't take photos either."
Caicai finally said: "And colors! There are so many beautiful colors in the world—red, orange, yellow, green, cyan, blue, purple—so beautiful!"
Xiao Ming's eyes grew brighter and brighter as he listened: "Then teach me now! I want to learn!"
GoGo said: "Don't rush, don't rush! Let's start with the basics. First, you need to understand how the camera 'sees' the world."
Guangguang said: "Right! We need to understand what photography is first. The word photography came from abroad, in English it's called photography."
Caicai explained: "Photo means light, graphy means drawing. Together it means 'drawing with light'! Photography is using this magical machine called a camera to record the beautiful scenery our eye
