The Opening of the Western Regions: Prelude to the Silk Road
In an autumn of the second century BCE, on the Ba Bridge outside Chang'an, a man in Han official robes bade farewell to the crowd seeing him off. Behind him stood the towering city walls and magnificent palaces; before him lay an unknown journey of immense length. This man's name was Zhang Qian, and he was about to embark on a journey that would alter the course of world history. His destination was the west, the distant Kingdom of Yuezhi—a nomadic regime located in what is today Central Asia. No one knew this journey would last thirteen years, nor did anyone anticipate that he would create a great passage connecting Eastern and Western civilizations.
When we look back upon this history today, we find that Zhang Qian's mission was by no means a fortuitous diplomatic venture. It was a continuation of decades of diplomatic efforts by the Han Dynasty, an embodiment of Emperor Wu of Han's grand ambitions, and more importantly, the outcome of prolonged competition between the Central Plains' agrarian civilization and the northern grassland nomadic civilization. To understand the historical background of Zhang Qian's westward journey, we must first review the transformation of Han-Xiongnu relations from marriage alliances to warfare.
The Han-Xiongnu Contest: The End of Marriage Alliances and the Dawn of War
In the early years of the Western Han Dynasty, a powerful nomadic empire arose on the northern grasslands of China—the Xiongnu. Modu Chanyu (r. 209–174 BCE) unified the various tribes of the northern grasslands and established a formidable regime stretching from Liaodong in the east to the Pamir region in the west. According to the "Memoirs of the Xiongnu" in Records of the Grand Historian, Xiongnu cavalry forces numbered "more than three hundred thousand bowmen," and their military might filled the newly established Han Dynasty with deep apprehension.
Faced with the Xiongnu military threat, Emperor Gaozu Liu Bang once attempted to resolve the border conflicts through force. In 200 BCE, Liu Bang personally led an army of 320,000 soldiers northward to attack the Xiongnu, only to be surrounded for seven days by Xiongnu cavalry at Baideng (northeast of present-day Datong, Shanxi), an event known as "the Siege of Baideng." This military defeat profoundly altered the Han Dynasty's foreign policy. Liu Bang adopted the advice of his strategist Liu Jing and decided to replace military confrontation with a "marriage alliance" policy—sending a royal princess to marry the Chanyu, while annually gifting large quantities of silk, grain, and wine, in exchange for border peace.
This marriage alliance policy served as the Han Dynasty's fundamental approach to Han-Xiongnu relations over the following decades. According to historical records, from Emperor Gaozu to the early years of Emperor Wu of Han, the Han Dynasty sent princesses to marry the Xiongnu Chanyu five times. This policy did indeed, to some extent, maintain border tranquility. The Book of Han's "Memoirs of the Xiongnu" comments: "When His Majesty (Emperor Wu) ascended the throne, he clearly renewed the marriage alliance terms, showing kindness and generosity, opening border markets, and providing abundant supplies." However, the marriage alliance policy was essentially a temporary compromise for peace that could not fundamentally solve the Xiongnu raids on Han borders.
The limitations of the marriage alliance policy were multifaceted. First, the Xiongnu Chanyus frequently violated the alliance terms, continuing their raids on borders while accepting Han gifts. Second, the peace brought by marriage alliances was unequal; the Han Dynasty annually delivered enormous quantities of wealth to the Xiongnu, becoming a heavy economic burden. Records of the Grand Historian's "Treatise on the Balanced Standard" notes that Han gifts to the Xiongnu annually included "silk, wine, rice, food, and other items," in massive quantities. More importantly, this political humiliation filled Han officials with deep shame. As the Han Dynasty's national strength gradually increased, more and more insightful individuals began calling for an end to this passive, defensive situation.
The ascension of Emperor Wu of Han (Liu Che) marked the realization of this transformation. In 141 BCE, the mere sixteen-year-old Liu Che ascended the throne as Emperor Wu. He was a ruler of extraordinary ambition, demonstrating from the very beginning of his reign a distinctly different external posture from his predecessors. In his imperial edicts, he repeatedly expressed dissatisfaction with the Xiongnu threat and began actively seeking ways to change the status quo. In Yuanguang Second Year (133 BCE), Emperor Wu convened his ministers in Weiyang Palace to discuss strategies against the Xiongnu. The minister Wang Hui proposed the "Ma Yi Stratagem," suggesting an ambush to lure and attack the main Xiongnu forces at the border. Although this action failed due to leaked information, it marked the Han Dynasty's complete abandonment of the marriage alliance policy and its beginning to address the Xiongnu threat through military means.
It was in this historical context that the strategic concept of allying with the Yuezhi in the Western Regions to jointly attack the Xiongnu emerged. The core idea of this strategy was: unite with Western Regions countries hostile to the Xiongnu, especially the Yuezhi people who had been driven out by the Xiongnu, establish an anti-Xiongnu alliance, and strategically form an east-west pincer movement against the Xiongnu. When Emperor Wu of Han consulted his ministers on how to deal with the Xiongnu, Zhang Qian, then a palace attendant, stepped forward and volunteered for the mission to the Western Regions. Zhang Qian understood the immense dangers of this journey, but he also recognized the profound significance of this mission for the Han Dynasty.
Zhang Qian's Mission: A Monumental Journey Across Mountains and Rivers
In Yuanguang Sixth Year (139 BCE), Zhang Qian departed from Chang'an, embarking on the most dangerous journey of his life. His delegation consisted of over one hundred people, including a surrendered Xiongnu man named Tang Yefu who served as interpreter and guide. They departed in the crisp autumn, a relatively suitable season for long-distance travel. However, no one could have anticipated tha
