Welcome to the magical world of badminton!
The net stands proudly in the center of the court, like a fair referee dividing the playground into two teams.
The height of the net is carefully calculated by scientists. According to international standards, the net height at the center of the court is 1.524 meters, about as tall as a six-year-old. At the edges, the net is slightly higher at 1.55 meters because the middle of the net sags a little bit.
The net looks thin, but it's woven from many thin strings. The holes in the net are just the right size - big enough for air to pass through, but small enough to stop the shuttlecock. If the shuttlecock wants to go to the other side, it must fly over the net!
The front court is the area closest to the net on each side. It's like the key area in basketball - a must-have position in any badminton match.
Why is the front court so important? Because when you're standing near the net, you can perform many clever tricks. You can tap the shuttlecock gently so it just barely crosses the net, or you can make a beautiful net shot that lands very close to the net, making your opponent stretch and scramble.
Playing in the front court requires very agile movements. You need to squat down and stand up quickly, move left and right rapidly, and hop like a little bunny. These movements look simple, but they're not easy to do! Don't worry though, we'll learn these magical footwork skills in later chapters.
The midcourt is the area between the front and back courts. It's like the midfield in soccer - a bridge connecting the front and back.
The midcourt is the largest area on the court, the most open space. When you're in the midcourt, you have the most choices - you can rush forward to the front court to save a shot, or retreat to the back court to prepare for a smash.
The midcourt is also a great place to practice fake moves. Because there's plenty of space here, you can make all kinds of moves to confuse your opponent. For example, you pretend to rush forward, your opponent thinks you're going to hit the front court, but then you suddenly turn around and hit the shuttlecock to the back court. This tactic of appearing to attack in one direction while actually attacking in another often catches opponents off guard.
The back court is the area farthest from the net. It's the best stage for showing power.
In the back court, you can perform the coolest smashes. When you jump high and slam the shuttlecock like a bullet into your opponent's court, that feeling is so cool! Back court players need strong arms and accurate judgment to deliver a deadly blow at the right moment.
The back court also tests your endurance. Because the shuttlecock flies the longest distance, you need to judge its landing spot and trajectory more accurately. You have to be like a little detective, watching every movement of your opponent, predicting where the shuttlecock will fly. This requires brainpower, not just strength!
The two long sides of the court are called sidelines in English. Sidelines are the boundaries of the court, just like the Great Wall guards China's borders.
The sidelines are different for singles and doubles! In singles, the inner sidelines are used because only one person is playing and doesn't need as much space. In doubles, two people play together, so the court widens up to use the outer sidelines. It's like your desk - if only one person sits, you can use just a small part of the desk. But if two people sit together, you need to use the whole desk.
The two short sides of the court are called baselines. The baseline is the very end of the court, the last line of defense for players.
If you hit the ball out of the baseline, it means you lose a point. The baseline is like the goal line on a soccer field - an important marker for determining whether the ball is in or out. When you're in the back court preparing for a smash, your goal is to land the ball inside the opponent's baseline, not beyond it.
In doubles badminton, there's a special line called the short service line. This line is near the net in the front court and specifies where the serve must land.
During a serve, players must stand in the back half of their court and serve the ball into the area between the opponent's short service line and the net. If the serve goes out or lands too deep, it's a fault! So serving is also a technical skill that requires practice to master.
In the center of the court, there's a line that divides the court left and right. This is called the center line. The center line is vertical, running from front court to back court like a straight road dividing the court into two sides.
The center line's role is to divide the left and right areas during doubles play. When you play with a partner, each of you is responsible for one half of the court, and the center line is your dividing line. It's like when you and a classmate clean the classroom together, and the teacher assigns each of you an area - the center line is that invisible dividing line.
The goal of badminton is simple: hit the shuttlecock over the net so it lands inside your opponent's court, while trying to keep it from landing in yours. There are two ways to score: either hit the shuttlecock into the opponent's court where they can't return it, or make your opponent make a mistake - like hitting it out of bounds, into the net, or failing to hit it over.
