欢迎来到智能检索新时代 / Welcome to the New Era of Intelligent Retrieval
Welcome to the New Era of Intelligent Retrieval. Have you ever experienced this: searching for "Apple's latest phone" only to be bombarded with news about the fruit; looking for "how to charge a Tesla" and getting results about both electric vehicle charging and stock market charging; on an e-commerce site, searching for "summer lightweight jacket" but being recommended winter cotton coats. These frustrating moments expose the inherent limitations of traditional keyword-based retrieval—it can only mechanically match strings, failing to grasp your true intent. Today, we stand at the threshold of a new era: intelligent retrieval no longer relies on simple string matching but understands semantics and captures intent to precisely find what you need. Welcome to the new era of intelligent retrieval, where vector databases and semantic search are quietly reshaping how we interact with information.
The early era: The precision and limitations of the Boolean model (1950s-1980s)
The起点 of modern computer retrieval can be traced back to the 1950s. Gerard Salton's SMART system in the 1960s laid the foundation for modern retrieval. Its core is the Boolean Model: users construct queries using logical operators like AND, OR, NOT, and the system returns documents that match exactly.
For example, the query `(Apple AND Phone) OR (Tesla AND Charging)` returns documents containing both "Apple" and "Phone" or both "Tesla" and "Charging". The Boolean model is logically clear and predictable, performing well in early structured databases and library catalogs.
However, the Boolean model has fundamental flaws: 1. Binary judgment: Documents either match or don't match, with no gradient of relevance. 2. Heavy user burden: Users need to master logical operators, which is difficult for ordinary users. 3. Vocabulary gap: If a document uses "smartphone" but the query uses "phone", matching fails despite high semantic relevance. 4. Lack of ranking: All matching documents are presented equally, with no prioritization of the most relevant results.
These limitations became intolerable with the explosive growth of the internet. In the 1980s, the Vector Space Model, proposed by Salton and others, became an important turning point. This model represents documents and queries as vectors in a high-dimensional space, computing relevance through vector similarity (e.g., cosine similarity), enabling ranking of retrieval results.
The Vector Space Model introduced the concepts of Term Frequency (TF) and Inverse Document Frequency (IDF), evolving into the classic TF-IDF weighting calculation. A term gets higher weight if it appears more frequently in a document and less frequently across the entire document collection. This somewhat mitigates the interference of common words (like "的", "是"), but it still relies on literal matching and cannot solve synonym and polysemy issues.
The maturation and bottleneck of statistical models (1990s-2010s)
From the 1990s to the 2010s, probability-based Language Models and the BM25 algorithm became mainstream. BM25 (Best Matching 25) is an optimized version of TF-IDF, significantly improving retrieval effectiveness through document length normalization, term frequency saturation, and other parameters. It remains the foundational algorithm for many search engines today.
During this period, retrieval systems could assign relevance scores based on term frequency, document length, field weights, etc., making result ranking more reasonable. But the core bottleneck persisted: the system could not understand text meaning. It did not know that "Apple" could refer to a fruit, a company, or a brand; that "Java" could mean a programming language, coffee, or an island. This "vocabulary gap" caused many relevant documents to be missed due to different wording.
Meanwhile, user queries became shorter and more colloquial (e.g., "good Sichuan food nearby"), which traditional models struggled to parse. Search engines began introducing Query Suggestion and Query Expansion, but these were still surface-level fixes based on literal matching, unable to fundamentally understand semantics.
2017-2018年,Transformer架构和BERT(Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers) 模型横空出世。
The deep learning revolution: The rise of semantic search (2013-present)
In 2013, Tomas Mikolov and colleagues released Word2Vec, ushering in the era of word embeddings. Word2Vec used neural networks to map vocabulary into dense vectors, making semantically similar words close in vector space (e.g., "king" - "man" + "woman" ≈ "queen"). This was a key breakthrough in semantic understanding: meaning is encoded as numerical vectors.
But Word2Vec is static; each word has a fixed vector regardless of context. "Apple" has the same vector in "eat an apple" and "buy an iPhone", failing to address polysemy.
From 2017 to 2018, the Transformer architecture and BERT (Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers) model emerged. BERT, through bidirectional attention mechanisms, generates context-aware dynamic vectors for each word. In "eat an apple", the vector for "apple" leans toward fruit; in "iPhone", it leans toward technology. This truly achieved matching based on deep semantics.
The core idea of semantic search is: map both queries and documents into the same semantic vector space, measuring semantic similarity through vector distance. This completely breaks the vocabulary gap—even if queries and documents use completely different words, as long as their semantics are similar, they can be matched.
For example, the query "how to charge an electric vehicle" and the document "Tesla Model 3 battery range and charging guide" might fail traditional keyword retrieval due to lack of exact matches for "electric vehicle" or "charging", but semantic search can recognize their high relevan
