Hello, Little Font Sprites!
你有没有过这种时刻:盯着不同地方的字,突然发现“哎,这个字我认识,但它怎么长得跟平时见的不一样呀?”(On a weekend afternoon, you’re curled up on the sofa munching on strawberry biscuits, watching Peppa Pig S3E7 “Muddy Puddles” — Peppa jumps into the mud and splashes around, and when the subtitles pop up, the characters for “Peppa loves jumping in muddy puddles so much” are round and chubby, with soft rounded edges, completely different from the neat, square characters on the cover of your first-grade Chinese textbook. Huh? Have you ever had this moment: staring at characters from different places and suddenly thinking “Wait, I know this character, but why does it look so different from the ones I usually see?”)
(That’s the magic of fonts! All the different styles of text you see every day — whether it’s in textbooks, picture books, animation subtitles, or street signs — as long as the text looks different, they’re all called “fonts”.)
(You can think of fonts as little “clothes” for text: the same text content, when dressed in different font “clothes”, will give people completely different feelings. Just like when you wear a tulle dress you feel like a little princess, and when you wear a sports uniform you feel like an energetic little superhero — text wears different font clothes, and it takes on completely different vibes too.)
下次看书的时候,可以特意留意一下哦~ 💡 Little Think: What’s your favorite “text clothing” that you usually see? Is it the neat, square Song typeface in textbooks? Or the soft round font in picture books? Pay attention to it next time you read a book! </sidebar>
这两个家族的字,长得可是完全不一样哦~(Oh right, you might have already noticed that the characters we use every day are mainly divided into two big “families”: the Chinese character family, and the Latin alphabet family (that’s the English we speak!). The characters from these two families look totally different~)
(Let’s talk about the members of our Chinese character family first~ Chinese characters are “square characters”, just like neat little building blocks, each taking up roughly the same amount of space. Whether it’s a simple character like 人 (rén, person) or 大 (dà, big) with few strokes, or a complex one like 赢 (yíng, win) or 藏 (cáng, hide) with lots of strokes, they all fit neatly into square grids. There are over 100,000 members in the Chinese character family now, but only about 3,000 are commonly used in daily life — just like the blocks in your toy box, most of the time you only use a few common ones, and the rest are rare special pieces.)
(You can think of Chinese characters like the Tetris blocks you play: each block is a neat square, and when you put them together they fit tightly, very tidy. Even the very complex character 龘 (dá, describing a flying dragon), when put in a grid, is still square and won’t spill out of the box.)
拉丁字母家族只有26个成员哦,就像26块小积木,但是拼来拼去能拼出几百万个英文单词,是不是特别厉害?(Now let’s look at the members of the Latin alphabet family. They’re not as neat as our Chinese characters — some are tall, some are short, just like kids lining up, some wearing height-increasing shoes
拉丁字母家族只有26个成员哦,就像26块小积木,但是拼来拼去能拼出几百万个英文单词,是不是特别厉害?(some even wear height-increasing insoles, some wear small slippers, all different heights and sizes. For example, letters like b, d, h, k are tall, taking up the top two lines; a, c, e, o are short, only taking up the middle line; and then there are g, j, p, q, whose heads are in the middle and feet stretch down to the bottom line, just like kids standing on tiptoe to reach something. The Latin alphabet family only has 26 members, just like 26 small building blocks, but put them together and you can make millions of English words, isn’t that amazing?)
你下次写作业的时候可以仔细观察一下,是不是很有意思?(Because Latin letters are all different heights, primary school English notebooks all have four lines and three spaces: the top line stops tall letters like 'b' from sticking out, the bottom line stops letters like 'g' from dropping down, and the two middle lines hold short letters like 'a' nice and tidy. The English words you write will be as neat as kids lining up for a nucleic acid test. Chinese characters are square blocks, so they only need to be written in square grids or Tian character grids, each character fits tightly without leaving empty spaces like Latin letters. You can observe carefully next time you do your homework, isn’t that interesting?)

这就是字体给文字带来的不一样的感觉呀~(Have you noticed that the same characters look completely different in different places? For example, the two characters for “sun” in your textbook are square and neat, every stroke is clear; while the two characters for “sun” in your picture book have soft rounded edges, even a little chubby curve, just like a real warm sun. That’s the different feeling that fonts bring to text~)
(You can do a super simple experiment: take your pencil and write “I love eating apples” three times on a piece of paper. The first time, write the strokes square and neat, with a little hook at the end, just like Song typeface; the second time, change all the corners to soft and round, no sharp edges, just like round font; the third time, make the strokes thick, no little hooks, just like Heiti. Look, the same four characters feel completely different, right? The square one looks very serious, the round one looks very cute, and the thick one looks very eye-catching.)
(The Big Family of Little Font Sprites)
