The Toy Mountain of Starlight Town
The Toy Mountain of Starlight Town
---
At 6:45 in the morning, the sky over Starlight Town was still holding on to one last sleepy star.
Leo—a ten-year-old boy whose hair looked like a wheat field just ruffled by a tornado—suddenly opened his eyes. Today was Monday, the first day of the new semester. His younger sister Mia, three years younger, lived in the next room, the one decorated with unicorn stickers. She was also starting school today.
"Seven o'clock!" Leo jumped out of bed, his bare feet hitting the floor—
—and let out a scream worthy of being recorded in the history of Starlight Town.
"Ouch—!"
His right foot had landed on a plastic dinosaur, the kind given at a birthday party three years ago by a good friend—the one whose eyes still lit up. It was crouching at the foot of the bed at a strange angle, like a beast lying in ambush in tall grass.
Leo
Leo hopped to one side with a limp, his eyes quickly scanning the room.
The scene before him could be described in one word: spectacular.
Of course, that was the word an adult would use. If you asked Leo to describe it himself, he'd say: "This is a disaster."
On the desk was a small mountain of pencil cases, comic books, expired candies, remote-control airplane parts, a missing puzzle piece, last year's birthday crown, a half-dried crayon, a shoe with no shoelace, and a crumpled test paper that had appeared from nowhere—with "Math Test: 67 points" written on it.
A teddy bear's arm stretched out from under the bed, as if calling for help. The wardrobe door was half-open, stuffed to the brim, with clothes pouring out like an erupting volcano. Worst of all was the window—Leo hadn't seen the whole window for a full two weeks.
Because in front of the window, there stood a mountain.
It was a mountain made of Lego blocks, plush toys, broken robots, race cars missing wheels, comic magazines, sticker books, empty biscuit boxes, colored pens, empty yogurt bottles, and a talking Hello Kitty doll (with dead batteries).
Leo
Leo had named this mountain "The Toy Mountain."
The peak of The Toy Mountain was almost touching the ceiling. The foot of the mountain blocked the window. Through the gaps in The Toy Mountain, Leo could vaguely see the outside sky—which should have been the pale pink of dawn, but was now reduced to a tiny patch.
Leo
Leo sighed. The sigh was bigger than the window.
"When did my room become like this?" he muttered to himself.
That was a good question.

The Secret of the Monster Room
Leo
Leo didn't start out living in the monster room.
Three years ago, when he first moved into this bedroom, it looked like this:
The floor was clean, the wood grain clearly visible. A small bed was placed against the north wall, with a little gray bear sitting on it. On the desk was just one lamp, one pen holder, and one book being read. The wardrobe held three jackets, two T-shirts, and one school uniform pair of pants. On the windowsill was a small photo frame, with a family photo inside.
At that time, Leo could find anything he was looking for in three seconds.
At that time, his "tidying time" every morning was ten minutes.
At that time, when he sat at the desk to do homework, he could focus continuously for forty-five minutes without being interrupted.
At that time, his room was like a gentle kitten, crouching in the corner, giving him safety and space.
But then, things slowly changed.
Every birthday, he received new gifts, but no one reminded him to send away the old ones. Every festival, Grandma sent new clothes, and Mom "by the way" brought back some discounted little things. The trending toys at school, the stickers swapped with classmates, the keychains won from lucky draws, the candies Auntie sent from abroad, the Lego set Dad "bought just for fun"…
Every time an item entered the room, it had a "legitimate reason."
But when all these legitimate reasons added up, three years later, Leo's room became what it was now—like a grown-up monster, slowly swallowing Leo's time, space, and attention into its belly.
Leo
Leo walked to the window, wanting to push it open and let the morning air in—
He pushed three times. It wouldn't budge.
It wasn't that the window was broken. The edge of The Toy Mountain had jammed the window frame.
Leo
Leo finally understood.
"My room," he said softly, "isn't waiting for me to wake up. It's trapping me."
At that moment, Mia's voice came from next door: "Brother—! Where are my red socks—!"
Leo
Leo sighed: "On the eastern slope of The Toy Mountain."
He was, of course, joking. He had no idea where Mia's red socks were—and that was exactly the problem.
---
Let's draw a picture of Leo's "monster morning" today using a chart.
```mermaid flowchart TD A[闹钟响起 7:00] --> B[跳下床找衣服] B --> C[踩到塑料恐龙 哎呦] C --> D[翻找袜子 找不到] D --> E[被乐高积木绊倒] E --> F[翻书包 书包呢] F --> G[翻出考卷 67分] G --> H[冲向门口] H --> I[找不到钥匙] I --> J[终于出门 迟到] J --> K[妈妈叹气] ```
这张图,就是 Leo 每一个「物品过剩」的早晨。
This picture is Leo's every "stuff-overload" morning.
每一格,都多花了时间。每一格,都少了一点耐心。每一格,那只怪兽都多吞掉一点快乐。
Every box costs more time. Every box costs a little more patience. Every box, the monster swallows a little more happiness.
Leo 现在读这本书的孩子,你们有没有觉得这张图很熟悉?
Leo, and children reading this book right now—does this chart feel familiar to you?
如果你今天早上找袜子找了五分钟以上,那么恭喜你,你的房间,可能也有一点点「怪兽」开始长大了。
If you spent more than five minutes looking for your socks this morning, congratulations—your room may also have a tiny bit of "monster" starting to grow.
1.2 物品过剩的三大症状 / Three Symptoms of Stuff Overload
Leo 一边穿衣服一边想:「为什么我的房间会变成这样?」
While getting dressed, Leo thought: "Why did my room become like this?"
这是一个值得认真回答的问题。
This was a question worth answering seriously.
Master Owl——我们一会儿就会正式介绍他——告诉过所有来到极简星球的小探险家:当物品多到开始偷走我们的快乐时,这就是物品过剩。
Master Owl—we'll formally introduce him in a moment—has told all the little explorers who come to the Minimalist Planet: When stuff gets so much that it starts stealing our happiness, that's stuff overload.
物品过剩不是「东西多」那么简单。它有三个清清楚楚的症状:
Stuff overload is not simply "having a lot of things." It has three clear symptoms:
🔍 症状一:找不到需要的东西 / Symptom 1: Can't find what you need
Mia 的红袜子在哪里?Leo 的数学课本在哪里?昨天的家庭签字单在哪里?
Where are Mia's red socks? Where is Leo's math textbook? Where is yesterday's signed permission slip?
这些问题的答案,本来应该在「固定的、熟悉的、伸手就够得着」的地方。但是当房间里的物品超过一定数量,这些「固定位置」就会被打乱,东西就会「消失」。
The answers to these questi
