Chapter 1: Welcome to Tokyo! Meet a Super City

Mimi Has Landed — A Question About "Lots and Lots of People"
The plane broke through thick clouds, and suddenly the window lit up.
Mimi (咪咪) is a little girl who loves asking "why." She is eight and a half years old. She lives in a small city called Sudbury, in Canada, where there are many forests and lots of snow. The whole city has fewer than 170,000 people. Today is her first time on an international flight, her first time coming to Asia. She flew with her mom from Vancouver for nearly ten hours. She slept twice on the plane, watched three cartoon episodes, and ate a slightly salty airplane meal.
When the plane began to descend, Mom gently nudged her: "Mimi, wake up. We're almost there."
She rubbed her eyes and pressed her face against the small window.
Then she said, "Wow."
The lights outside were like diamond chips scattered on black velvet. One patch, then another, then another, all connected into an ocean of light, stretching all the way to the horizon. She had never seen so many lights. In Sudbury at night, she could look up and count hundreds of stars. But here, the stars looked few — because there were just so many lights on the ground.
"Mimi, look. This is Tokyo," Mom said.
"Tokyo?" Mimi repeated the name. She had watched a little introduction on the plane TV — she knew Japan was an island country, knew Tokyo was its capital. But the word "capital" was still too abstract for an eight-and-a-half-year-old. Looking at that ocean of light, three questions rose in her heart:
> Question 1: Who are all these lights for? > Question 2: How many people actually live here? > Question 3: How do they go out, go to school, go to work every day?
These three questions seem simple. But Mimi didn't know — each of them could fill a whole book. Today, let's follow Mimi and start with the second question: How many people actually live in Tokyo?
💡 Little Hint: Before you keep reading, take a guess — is Tokyo's population 10 times Sudbury's? 100 times? Or even more?

What Is a "Megacity"?
The plane landed at Narita Airport. Customs, luggage, turns, subway. Mimi followed her mom for a long, long time. By the time they finally got on a small train heading to the city, she was tired and leaning against Mom's shoulder.
"Mom," she asked, "how many people live in Tokyo?"
Mom smiled and said a number: "Around thirty-seven million."
Mimi opened her mouth wide. Her class in Sudbury had only 23 kids, and the whole school added up to about 400 people. How many 400s are there in thirty-seven million? She tried to calculate in her head, but couldn't figure it out.
"Mom, how many zeros are in thirty-seven million?"
"Seven zeros. Thirty million is 30,000,000, and thirty-seven million is 37,000,000."
"That's many, many times more than our school..."
"Many, many times more," Mom said. "But Tokyo is not just a regular 'very big city.' It has a special name."
"What name?"
"Megacity. In English: megacity."

2.1 "Mega" 是什么意思?/ What Does "Mega" Mean?
小朋友,你有没有在电视上听过这些词?MP3,megabyte(兆字节),megaphone(扩音器)。
Hey kid, have you heard these words on TV? MP3, megabyte, megaphone. They all share a common beginning: mega.
Mega is a word from ancient Greek, meaning "huge." Scientists and engineers love this word — they use mega to mean "a really, really big amount."
- **1 megabyte** = 一百万个字节 = a million bytes
- **1 megaton** = 一百万吨 = a million tons
- **1 megacity** = 一千万以上人口的城市 = a city with more than 10 million people
So megacity doesn't mean "any big city" — it's a special word, used only for cities that are really, really big. A regular "big city" might have only two or three million people, while a megacity must have at least ten million.
> In 1950, there were only two megacities in the whole world: New York and Tokyo. By 2024, there are more than thirty megacities worldwide, and most of them are in Asia.
2.2 世界上有哪些 megacity?/ What Megacities Are There in the World?
Let's meet some of the largest megacities in the world:
- 🇧🇷 **圣保罗 (São Paulo)**:约 2,200 万人 / About 22 million
You can see that Tokyo still sits firmly in first place. Its "Greater Tokyo Area" includes Tokyo city itself and several surrounding prefectures, with about 37 million residents.
Number Comparison
> > In other words, the population of Greater Tokyo is more than the entire country population of Australia, and almost as much as the whole country of Canada!
When Mimi heard this, her jaw almost dropped: "Mom, one city has more people than a whole country?"
"Yes. That's why it's called a megacity," Mom said with a smile.

Where Is Tokyo? What Does It Look Like on the Map?
