Have you ever wondered how small the pieces can get when you tear a piece of paper? Imagine having an infinitely sharp knife, cutting again and again, until you simply cannot cut any further. What would you see at that point?
This wasn't just your curiosity alone. More than two and a half thousand years ago, a group of philosophers in ancient Greece were pondering the same questions. They walked along the sunny shores of the Aegean Sea, debating passionately about the most fundamental question of the universe: What is matter made of? Can it be divided infinitely?
This question seems simple, yet it touches the very foundation of natural science. Scientists spent over two thousand years, through countless experiments, failures, and more experiments, gradually finding the answer. And the core of that answer is what we will explore today—the atom.
Among the cradles of human civilization, ancient Greece gave birth to one of the most brilliant minds in human history. Around 460 BCE, in the city of Abdera in Thrace, a thinker named Democritus was born. He was called "the Laughing Philosopher" by later generations because he spent his entire life pursuing happiness, and his source of happiness was—exploring the mysteries of nature.
Democritus believed that everything in the universe was made up of extremely tiny, invisible particles. He called these particles "atomos," which in Greek means "indivisible"—where a means "not" and tomos means "to cut."
Why did Democritus come up with such an idea? Let's follow his reasoning:
First, he observed a simple phenomenon: when we cut matter, we cannot cut forever. No matter how sharp the knife, there will eventually be a limit where we simply cannot cut any further.
Secondly, he noticed certain natural phenomena:
- The fragrance of flowers drifting from afar always grows fainter, rather than suddenly disappearing
- When perfume is dropped into water, it slowly spreads throughout the entire glass
- A worn statue has less stone, yet it doesn't suddenly "vanish"
Democritus inferred that if matter could be infinitely divided, things like fragrance should be infinitely diluted and eventually completely disappear. But this wasn't the case, so there must be some minimum unit—the atom.
Democritus's atomic theory contained several core ideas that still shine with the light of wisdom more than two thousand years later:
First, atoms are eternal. Democritus believed that atoms could neither be created nor destroyed. They have always existed and will always exist. The various changes we observe are merely the result of atoms rearranging themselves.
Second, atoms are indivisible. This is the fundamental meaning of the word "atomos." Atoms are the smallest units of matter, the "ultimate particles" of nature, incapable of being divided into smaller parts.
Third, atoms are in motion. In Democritus's vision, atoms constantly move, collide, and combine in the "void" (empty space). Like a swarm of invisible miniature marbles dancing through infinite space.
Fourth, atoms have different shapes. Some atoms are smooth, some are rough; some are round, some have edges and corners. The different properties matter exhibits—hard or soft, sweet or bitter—are all determined by the shape, size, and arrangement of atoms.
You might ask, since atomic theory made so much sense, why wasn't it universally accepted by the scientific community of that time?
This is an excellent question. The answer lies in the fact that Democritus's atomic theory lacked experimental evidence. More than two and a half thousand years ago, experimental science hadn't yet been born, and people understood the world primarily through observation and reasoning. Another more famous philosopher—Aristotle—proposed a completely different viewpoint. He believed that matter was continuous and could be infinitely divided, with no so-called "minimum particles."
Aristotle's authority was so powerful that his views dominated Western thought for nearly two thousand years. During this time, atomic theory was almost forgotten, with only a few people remembering Democritus's spark of wisdom.
However, history is always full of surprises. Let's look at this timeline:

Time flies, and we now arrive in 17th century England. In 1661, a book titled *The Sceptical Chymist* was published by Robert Boyle.
Boyle was born in 1627 in Ireland to a noble family and was one of the most learned men of his time. He was not only proficient in chemistry, physics, and mathematics but also fluent in Latin, Greek, and French. But Boyle's greatest achievement wasn't his family background—it was that he introduced experimental methods into chemical research.
Before Boyle, chemistry (then called "alchemy") was more like a mysterious craft than a science. Alchemists pursued the "art of transmutation" to turn ordinary metals into gold and the "philosopher's stone" to cure all diseases and grant immortality. Their work relied on experience and intuition, lacking systematic theoretical guidance.
Boyle thought this approach wouldn't work. For chemistry to become a true science, it had to be built on repeatable experiments and precise measurements. He demonstrated this viewpoint with practical action.
In *The Sceptical Chymist*, Boyle proposed a revolutionary viewpoint: Elements are the simplest substances that cannot be further decomposed. This definition was already very close to the modern chemical definition of elements!
