What Is Minimalist Living? Little Secrets Kids Can Understand
Have you ever had moments like this: rushing to school in the morning, flipping through your pencil case for 5 minutes just to find a usable pencil, almost crying in frustration? Or when you’re playing with toys, your toy box is so stuffed full that your favorite Ultraman card is buried 10 layers under a toy car, you search for it in a sweat, and by the time you find it, Mom is already calling you for dinner? Don’t worry, today we’re going to talk about a super useful little secret: minimalist living. It can solve all these little troubles for you, and even give you more time to do the things you love!
Lots of kids hear the word "minimalism" for the first time and think of "throwing things away" or "living a hard life", even thinking it’s a "bad idea" grownups came up with to save money. But actually, minimalism is never about throwing away your favorite Lego sets, beloved picture books, or birthday gifts from Mom!
The core of minimalism is just 3 words: keep what you love. You can imagine all the things in your home as a group of kids. Some are your favorite "best friends", like the space Lego set you spent 3 months building, the Coke robot your dad got you for your birthday, or the picture book you drew for a whole month. Of course you’ll keep these "best friends"! Then there are the "acquaintances", like clothes that are too small to wear, pencils with broken leads that can’t be used anymore, or old toys you only played with once. These "acquaintances" don’t need to take up your space. You can give them to kids who need them more, or donate them to children in mountainous areas. That way they can find new owners, and your space will become more spacious too.
Let’s take a super common example: isn’t your backpack often like a little trash can? It’s stuffed with half a semester’s worth of scrap drawing paper, pencils that have broken 3 times, a keychain you don’t like that someone gave you, and even last week’s snack bag that you forgot to throw away? If you clear out all the useless stuff and only keep your favorite 3 pencils, 1 new eraser, 1 anime charm you love, and the textbooks you use every day, your backpack will be half as light. You won’t have to rummage through it messily in the morning to find things, and you might even get to sleep 5 minutes longer!

You might ask: "Besides organizing pencil cases and toy boxes, is minimalism useful for anything else?" Of course! Minimalism actually has 3 little "subordinates", each in charge of one of the worlds you interact with most often: visible physical items, digital content on your phone/tablet, and even your daily time. All three of these little subordinates do the same job: clear out the useless stuff, and make space for what you love.
The first subordinate is the Physical Item Minimalism Manager. This is the one you’re most familiar with—it helps you organize visible things: scrap paper in your pencil case, unused toys in your toy box, clothes that don’t fit in your wardrobe, and useless stickers on your desk. Its job is super simple: find things you don’t use, don’t like, or don’t need, and help you clear them out. Your space will become more spacious, and you’ll find things faster too.
For example, there was a kid named Duoduo whose toy box was so stuffed she couldn’t even close the lid. Every time she looked for her Barbie doll’s shoes, she had to rummage for half an hour, and she often stepped on scattered Lego pieces, crying out in pain. Later, she played a "toy sorting game" with her mom: they divided all the toys into 3 piles: ① Favorites, played with every day; ② Sometimes played with, used once every few weeks; ③ Never played with again. She donated the more than 20 toys in the third pile to younger kids in the community, and the remaining two piles fit perfectly in the toy box, with the lid closing easily. Now she can find her Barbie shoes in 10 seconds, never steps on Lego pieces anymore, and has much more time to build her favorite Frozen castle!
这就是数字 clutter(数字杂物)在捣乱哦!
This little subordinate is in charge of all the digital content on your phone, tablet, and computer: useless apps, useless group messages, food videos you bookmarked but never watch, and learning apps you downloaded but never opened. Have you ever had this experience: when you’re doing homework, your tablet suddenly pops up an ad for a game, you can’t help clicking on it and playing for 10 minutes. By the time you come back to your senses, you can’t finish your homework, and you don’t have time to watch cartoons anymore? That’s digital clutter causing trouble! The Digital Minimalism Guard’s job is to help you clear out all this useless digital content, so you can focus more when using electronic devices, and not waste time.
For example, there was a kid named Guoguo whose tablet had 32 apps before, 20 of which were games. She couldn’t help clicking on them to play when doing homework every day, so she had to finish her homework at 10pm, and didn’t even have enough time to sleep. Later, she played a "digital spring cleaning" game with her mom: they listed all the apps they hadn’t opened in 3 months, deleted the ones they knew they wouldn’t play again, and quit all the useless group chats, only keeping 1 learning app and 1 drawing app. After deleting them, her tablet never lagged anymore, and she didn’t have to spend 5 minutes looking for the learning app. Now she can finish her homework in 40 minutes, and uses the remaining time to draw what she likes, or go to the park with her mom. She used to worry that she wouldn’t be able to play if she deleted the games, but later found out she didn’t want to play those games at all, and she was much happier after deleting them!
This little subordinate is in charge of your daily time: playing with erasers while doing homework, zoning out during interest classes, or spending the whole weekend scrolling through short videos without doing anything meaningful—these are al
