The geological history of the Arabian Peninsula is an epic spanning hundreds of millions of years of Earth's evolution, and Dubai, this modern metropolis in the desert, has risen as a miracle upon this ancient land. When we examine Dubai's geographical location, we must first understand the geological structure and formation process of this region—not only as the foundation for comprehending Dubai's natural environment, but also as the key to grasping why this city can respond to desert challenges in such a unique way. From a geological perspective, the Arabian Peninsula is located at the southeastern corner of the boundary between the African Plate and the Eurasian Plate, and its formation is closely related to the evolution of the Indian Ocean seafloor spreading and the Red Sea Rift. Approximately 25 million years ago, as the African Plate separated from the Arabian Plate, a massive rift began forming between these two plates, which became the prototype of today's Red Sea. This geological movement continues to this day, expanding at an average rate of about 2.5 centimeters per year, causing the Arabian Peninsula to continuously move northward relative to the African continent.
Geological structures have played a decisive role in shaping the Arabian Peninsula's landforms. The western edge of the peninsula along the Red Sea coast features a series of fault-block mountains, the most famous being the Asir Mountains rising toward the sky, with elevations reaching above 3,000 meters. The formation of these mountains is closely related to the expansion of the Red Sea Rift, resulting from the combined effects of crustal uplift and volcanic activity caused by plate movements. Between the mountains and the Red Sea lie narrow coastal plains, where traces of the ancient Tethys Sea's legacy can still be faintly seen. The central and eastern regions of the peninsula are primarily composed of the ancient Arabian Shield, a crustal basement formed during the Precambrian period (approximately 540 million years ago). After long-term weathering and erosion, this has resulted in the relatively flat plateaus and basin terrain seen today.
Dubai's location sits precisely on the eastern coastal plain of the Arabian Peninsula, near the southern entrance to the Persian Gulf (Arabian Gulf). Geologically, Dubai lies within the extension of the Zagros-Hormuz Fold Belt, characterized by thick sedimentary layers, gentle surface undulations, and complex subsurface geological structures. Over the past several million years, the Persian Gulf region has experienced multiple sea level fluctuations—during ice ages, seawater receded exposing vast land areas; during interglacial periods, seawater invaded forming wide shallow continental shelves. The coastal area where Dubai is located today was formed through such反复的海陆交替变迁,沉积物主要由阿拉伯半岛内陆的风沙、河流冲积物和海洋生物遗体堆积而成。
From the perspective of stratigraphic lithology, the surface of the Dubai area is primarily covered by Quaternary Period (approximately 2.6 million years ago to present) loose sediments, including aeolian sand, alluvial soil, and salt marsh deposits. In the subsurface, multiple geological layers exist: the upper layer consists of Neogene Period sandstones and siltstones, the middle layer features Paleogene Period carbonate rocks, and the lower layer comprises pre-Tertiary ancient basement rocks. The varying porosity and permeability of these geological strata create a complex aquifer system, which forms the geological foundation for understanding Dubai's groundwater hydrology and saltwater intrusion issues. Particularly noteworthy is the salt marsh (Sabkha) deposits in this region—a distinctive geological phenomenon formed by highly evaporative conditions in coastal intertidal zones, creating salt-rich clay sediments that form hard salt crusts under dry climatic conditions, significantly impacting engineering construction.
When we shift our focus from geological structure to climatic characteristics, we find that Dubai's climate environment is equally extreme and unique. Dubai experiences a tropical desert climate (BWh type in the Köppen classification), characterized by high temperatures year-round, scarce precipitation, and evaporation far exceeding precipitation. According to data from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the UAE National Center of Meteorology, Dubai's annual average temperature ranges between 26°C and 28°C. Summer temperatures (June to September) have average highs of 40°C to 45°C, with extreme temperatures exceeding 50°C (the extreme maximum temperature of 52.1°C was recorded in July 2002). Even during the so-called "winter" (December to February), Dubai's average highs remain between 20°C and 25°C, and frost is historically rare. This sustained high-temperature environment poses enormous challenges for urban construction and daily life.
Scarce precipitation is one of the most notable features of tropical desert climates. Dubai's annual average precipitation typically ranges between 50mm and 100mm, but the actual figures vary dramatically from year to year—some years may receive less than 20mm, while individual rainy years may exceed 200mm. The seasonal distribution of precipitation is also irregular, mainly concentrated during the winter months from November to March of the following year, appearing as brief torrential rains that often dump most of the annual precipitation within a few hours. This type of rainfall is characterized by high intensity, short duration, and strong locality, often accompanied by sandstorms or thunderstorms, posing severe tests for urban drainage systems. Notably, although precipitation is extremely scarce, air humidity often remains at relatively high levels—summer relative humidity typically ranges between 50% and 80%, and coastal areas can even reach above 90%. The combination of high temperature and high humidity creates an unbearable "sauna-like" feeling, which in meteorology is referred to as exceeding the "Heat Index."
