Chapter 1: The Birth of Constantinople: The 330 CE Urban Planning
> > Dear young explorers, if you stand on the European shore of Istanbul, Turkey today and look across the Bosphorus Strait, you can see the domes of the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia shining side by side. But did you know that 1,700 years ago, this was just a small fishing village with only a few hundred households, called Byzantium? It was not until 330 CE that Roman Emperor Constantine I built a brand-new city here, naming it "New Rome". Later, people renamed it Constantinople to honor the emperor. This city not only became the center of the Mediterranean world, but also created the Byzantine civilization that lasted for more than 1,100 years. All the secrets of the Byzantine Empire we are going to explore today start with the birth of this city.
> The 3rd-century CE Roman Empire was mired in an unprecedented crisis: Germanic tribes from the north kept crossing the Rhine and Danube to invade the Italian heartland, while the Persian Sasanian Dynasty in the east continuously attacked Rome’s eastern provinces including Syria and Egypt. Years of war pushed the empire’s finances to the brink, and ordinary people suffered greatly. The emperor at the time, Diocletian, came up with a solution: split the empire into east and west, ruled jointly by two senior emperors (Augusti) and two junior emperors (Caesares), a system called the *Tetrarchy*. It was just like your class selecting 4 group leaders responsible for study, discipline, sports and hygiene respectively – far more efficient than having only one monitor in charge of everything.
> But the Tetrarchy failed to solve the root problem: the two senior emperors often fought each other for supreme power. News of a war in the east took at least 20 days to reach the western capital Rome, as messengers rode more than 2,000 kilometers. By the time western reinforcements set out for the east, the enemy had already won. Rome, located on the Tiber River in central Italy, was more than 3,000 kilometers from the empire’s eastern border and 2,000 kilometers from the northern border – it simply could not respond to crises on both sides in time.
> In 306 CE, Roman troops stationed in Britannia (modern-day UK) acclaimed 25-year-old Constantine I as the western Caesar. At that time, the eastern emperor Licinius controlled the Balkans, Anatolia and Egypt. Constantine’s goal was to unify the entire empire, and the first thing he needed was a capital closer to the east that could mobilize troops quickly.
> In 312 CE, Constantine fought a decisive battle against Licinius’s forces at the Milvian Bridge in northern Italy. Legend has it that before the battle, Constantine saw a cross-shaped symbol in the sky with the words *In Hoc Signo Vinces* (“By this sign, you will conquer”). He immediately ordered his soldiers to paint crosses on their shields, and won the battle against all odds. After this battle, Constantine became the sole ruler of the entire Roman Empire, and immediately launched the construction plan for a new capital.
> Constantine’s engineering team spent 2 years investigating all potential sites on the west coast of Anatolia (modern-day Turkey): the ancient city of Troy had flat terrain but no natural barriers, making it easy to attack; Nicaea was an inland city with no seaport, making trade and transport very inconvenient. Only Byzantium, a small town on the European shore of the Bosphorus Strait, perfectly met all his requirements for a new capital.

> If you look at a map of Istanbul today, you will find that Byzantium’s location is like a natural castle wrapped in seawater: to the north is the Golden Horn, an inland gulf that is one of the safest natural harbors in the world – no matter how big the waves are outside, ships inside the harbor will not shake; to the south is the Sea of Marmara, to the east is the Bosphorus Strait connecting the Black Sea and the Mediterranean, and only the west connects to the Balkan Peninsula in Europe.
> How strong is the defensive advantage of this terrain? Let’s do the math: if the enemy attacks from the sea, they must control three sea areas at the same time – the Golden Horn, the Sea of Marmara and the Bosphorus Strait – to get their ships close to shore. It’s like you have to guard three gates at the same time, so the enemy needs three times as many warships to break through. If the enemy attacks from land, there is only a 5-kilometer-wide land passage to the west. As long as you build a strong city wall at the end of this passage, you can block all land attacks.
> Even more impressive, controlling the Bosphorus Strait means controlling the only trade route between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean. At that time, the Black Sea coast was an important grain-producing area of the Roman Empire: wheat from Egypt, fish from the Black Sea, and wool from Anatolia all had to pass through the Bosphorus Strait to be transported to various provinces of the empire. Constantinople was like a supermarket built at the entrance of a residential area – everyone entering and leaving had to pay a “toll” (customs duty) here. The toll revenue alone was enough to feed all the city’s residents, with plenty left over.
> Constantine gave the new capital the official name *Nova Roma* (“New Rome”), because he wanted to build a hub city connecting the eastern and western parts of the Roman Empire: the west was the traditional Latin-speaking area, with mostly European Roman residents who believed in traditional Roman polytheism; the east was the Greek-speaking area, with mostly Greek and Anatolian residents whose culture was closer to the East. The new capital was right in the middle of the east and west, just like the living room of your house, connecting your bedroom (the west) and study (the east), so people from both sides could communicate and do business here.
(Constantinople
