Have you ever wondered, in ancient times long ago, when there were no phones, no computers, no electricity, not even paper, how did people record wisdom and pass on knowledge? Back then, the ancient Chinese people used a magical method—drawing symbols—to record their observations and thoughts about heaven, earth, and life. These were passed down from generation to generation, eventually forming a remarkable book. This book is the star of our journey—the I Ching (Book of Changes).
Imagine if you could travel back three thousand years, what would you most want to bring with you? A delicious meal? A new set of clothes? Or a gaming console? The Chinese people from three thousand years ago would tell you without hesitation: what they most wanted to bring was a book written on bamboo strips. That book was the I Ching. It's not just any book—it's like a key to the treasure chest of Chinese civilization, containing the ancients' understanding of the world, their wisdom about life, and their ability to glimpse the future.
The Origin Story: A Journey Through Time
To understand the magic of the I Ching, we need to first hear its "birth story." Every great thing has its unique beginning, and the I Ching is no exception. Let's hop into our time machine and travel back to ancient times to see how this book came to be!
Fu Xi Draws the Trigrams—The World's First "Emoji"
Long, long ago, in prehistoric times, there was a great leader named Fu Xi. Back then, humanity was just transitioning from savagery to civilization. Many people didn't know how to farm, build houses, or even read and write. Everyone worked hard every day just to fill their bellies, watching nature's mysterious powers with both fear and curiosity.
Fu Xi was a person who loved to observe and think deeply. Every day, he looked up at the sky and down at the earth, watching the sun rise and set, the moon wax and wane, and the seasons change in their endless cycle. He noticed that clouds in the sky formed various shapes, mountains and rivers on the ground followed their own patterns, and animals had their unique habits.
One day, Fu Xi sat on a high mountain, watching the turbulent Yellow River and Luo River (two great rivers), lost in deep thought. He wondered: "All things in the world seem chaotic, but actually follow rules. If I could discover these rules, wouldn't life be better?"
Just as he was deep in meditation, a miracle happened! From the Yellow River and Luo River, a magical dragon horse leaped out, with an unusual pattern on its back. At the same time, a giant sacred turtle rose from the Luo River, covered with beautiful patterns. Fu Xi studied these patterns carefully and discovered they contained profound truths.
With sudden inspiration, Fu Xi used the simplest symbols to record eight basic phenomena of nature:
Fu Xi's eight symbols are called the Ba Gua (Eight Trigrams). You can imagine them as the ancients' "emojis"—each symbol represents a natural force, a life scene, an emotional state.
Did you know? The symbols Fu Xi created actually contain a super important mathematical principle—the binary system! Although "binary system" sounds modern and high-tech, Fu Xi discovered it over three thousand years ago!
Let's play a game: imagine the yang line (one solid long line `—`) as the number 1, and the yin line (two short lines `--`) as the number 0. Now let's count:
``` 乾卦 ☰ = 三根阳爻 = 111 = 十进制的 7 乾卦 ☰ = three yang lines = 111 = 7 in decimal
坤卦 ☷ = 三根阴爻 = 000 = 十进制的 0 坤卦 ☷ = three yin lines = 000 = 0 in decimal ```
神奇吧?三千年前的伏羲,就已经用符号表达了0到7的所有数字!而现代计算机用的二进制系统,要等到十七世纪才被德国的数学家莱布尼茨正式提出来。更有趣的是,莱布尼茨在发明二进制的时候,正是受到了《易经》的启发呢!
Isn't that amazing? Three thousand years ago, Fu Xi was already expressing all numbers from 0 to 7 with symbols! The modern binary system used in computers wasn't formally proposed until the 17th century by German mathematician Leibniz. What's even more interesting is that when Leibniz invented binary, he was actually inspired by the I Ching!
文王演易——监狱里诞生的伟大智慧
King Wen Completes the Changes—The Great Wisdom Born in Prison
时间从上古时代来到了商朝末年,大约是公元前1100年左右。那时候的天下,有一个叫周文王的人。他是周国的首领,非常聪明、善良,深得百姓爱戴。
Time moved forward from ancient times to the end of the Shang Dynasty, around 1100 BCE. In that era, there was a man called King Wen of Zhou. He was the leader of the state of Zhou, extremely intelligent and kind, deeply loved by his people.
但是,商朝的最后一个皇帝——商纣王,是一个残暴的统治者。他看到周文王这么受欢迎,心里很不舒服,觉得这是一种威胁。于是,他找了个借口,把周文王抓起来,关进了一个叫羑里的监狱里。
But the last emperor of the Shang Dynasty—King Zhou of Shang—was a cruel ruler. When he saw how popular King Wen was, he became uneasy and felt threatened. So, using some flimsy excuse, he arrested King Wen and imprisoned him in a prison called Youli.
普通人被关进监狱,可能会绝望、愤怒、放弃。但周文王不是普通人!他在监狱里没有自暴自弃,而是利用这段时间,静静地思考、深深地研究。他把伏羲留下的八卦,两个两个叠在一起,创造出了六十四卦,并且为每一个卦都写上了详细的解释——这就是后来的卦辞。
An ordinary person thrown into prison might despair, grow angry, or give up. But King Wen was no ordinary person! In prison, he didn't lose hope. Instead, he used this time to think quietly and study deeply. He took the eight trigrams left by Fu Xi, combined them in pairs, creating 64 hexagrams, and wrote detailed explanations for each one—these became the famous judgments (guàcí).
> 你知道什么是“叠”在一起吗? > > Do you know what "combining" means? > > 想象你有两个杯子,每个杯子上画着八卦中的一个符号。把一个杯子放在另一个杯子上面,上面的杯子代表"上卦"(外卦),下面的杯子代表"下卦"(内卦)。这样,就形成了一个新的符号——六爻的六十四卦! > > Imagine you have two cups, each with one of the eight trigrams drawn on it. Place one cup on top of the other—the upper cup represents the "upper trigram" (or outer trigram), and the lower cup represents the "lower trigram" (or inner trigram). Together, they form a new symbol—a hexagram with six lines—making 64 combinations!
文王在监狱里待了整整七年。在这七年中,他不仅完成了六十四卦的创作,还从自己的人生经历中领悟到了很多道理。他把对天道、人道、地道的观察都融入了《易经》之中。
King Wen spent a full seven years in prison. During those seven years, he not only completed the creation of the 64
