Imagine for a moment that you are a tiny explorer, no bigger than a speck of dust. What would you see if you shrank down to the size of a pinhead? You might be surprised to discover that you would find an entire world teeming with life—a world inhabited by countless invisible neighbors. These microscopic residents, so small that millions of them could fit on the period at the end of this sentence, are what scientists call microorganisms.
Microorganisms, also known as microbes, are living organisms that are too small to be seen with the naked eye. The word "micro" comes from Greek and means "small," while "organism" refers to any living thing. Together, microorganisms are small living creatures that require special tools called microscopes to be observed and studied.
To truly appreciate how small microorganisms are, we need to understand a unit of measurement called the micrometer, also written as micron (symbol: μm). One micrometer equals one-thousandth of a millimeter. To put this into perspective, the diameter of a human hair is approximately 70 micrometers. This means you could line up about 70 microorganisms end to end, and they would still be no wider than a single strand of hair!
Let us make some comparisons with everyday objects to help you visualize just how small microorganisms really are:
Number of microorganisms that could fit | |:-------------|:----------|:--------------------------------------| | 句号 Period (.) | 约0.3毫米 about 0.3 mm | 约300个 about 300 | | 针尖 Needle point | 约1毫米 about 1 mm | 约1000个 about 1000 | | 食盐颗粒 Salt grain | 约1毫米 about 1 mm | 约1000个 about 1000 | | 蚂蚁 Ant | 约2-5毫米 about 2-5 mm | 约2000-5000个 about 2000-5000 |
From this table, you can see that thousands of microorganisms could live on a tiny grain of salt! This gives you an idea of just how small these "invisible spirits" are. They live in places we never notice, going about their daily lives quietly and busily.
The microbial family is a vast and diverse community! Scientists have classified microorganisms into several major groups, much like we categorize animals into mammals, birds, and fish. The main members of the microbial family are bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa. Each member has its own unique appearance and way of life. Let us meet them all!
Bacteria are the most numerous and widely distributed members of the microbial world. If we compare the microscopic world to a kingdom, bacteria would be the largest population in that kingdom. Bacteria are single-celled organisms—one single cell contains everything needed for life.
Bacteria come in many different shapes, and scientists have given them interesting names based on their appearances:
Spherical bacteria are called cocci (singular: coccus). Imagine a perfect round ball—that is what a coccus looks like. Cocci often group together in various patterns. Some look like bunches of grapes (Staphylococcus), some resemble necklaces (Streptococcus), and others appear in pairs (Diplococcus).
Rod-shaped bacteria are called bacilli (singular: bacillus). They look like tiny sticks or rods, some straight and some slightly curved. Bacilli are among the most common bacterial shapes. *Escherichia coli* (E. coli) is a rod-shaped bacterium that lives in our intestines, where it usually helps us digest food.
Spiral-shaped bacteria are called spirilla (singular: spirillum). They look like tiny springs or corkscrews. Among them, there is a special group of very thin spiral bacteria called spirochetes, which spin like corkscrews—very interesting indeed!

Although bacteria consist of only one cell, that cell has an exquisite design. Bacterial cells are called prokaryotic cells, which means they lack a true nucleus. Instead, their genetic material (DNA) floats freely in the cytoplasm. Outside the cell is a tough cell wall that acts like armor, protecting the internal structures. Some bacteria even grow flagella—tail-like structures that work like propellers to help them swim through liquids.
Viruses are very special members of the microbial world. What makes them unique is that viruses cannot live independently. They must parasitize the cells of other living organisms to survive and reproduce.
The structure of viruses is extremely simple—so simple that scientists have debated whether they should be considered "living" at all. A typical virus consists of two parts: genetic material (either DNA or RNA) and a protein coat called the capsid that surrounds it. Some viruses also have an additional lipid envelope outside the capsid, like wearing a hat. Viruses come in many shapes: some are spherical, some are rod-shaped, and others have complex structures that look like tiny spacecraft.
Viruses are much smaller than bacteria. Most bacteria have diameters between 0.5 and 5 micrometers, while viruses typically range from 20 to 300 nanometers (nm). One nanometer equals 0.001 micrometer, so viruses can be dozens or even hundreds of times smaller than bacteria! If we enlarged a medium-sized virus to the size of a football field, then a bacterium at the same scale would be about four football fields wide, and your fingertip would be several kilometers long!
