The Essence of Product Thinking
Product thinking in action: Imagine you're planning a one-week trip to Japan. You need to decide destinations, budget, itinerary, accommodation, transportation... What seems like a simple travel plan actually perfectly simulates the entire process of product management. You act as the product manager, and the "travel experience" is the product you're building. The user is yourself, and your need is "to have a fulfilling, enjoyable, and memorable cultural exploration within limited time and budget." To achieve this, you systematically gather information (such as attraction ratings, seasonal weather, transportation convenience), design solutions (itinerary, budget allocation), execute the plan (book flights and hotels), and flexibly adjust during the trip (like visiting museums on rainy days). This process is essentially a microcosm of applying product thinking to solve problems.
When we expand our perspective from personal travel to the broader world, we find that the concept of "product" has long transcended traditional physical goods. Today, a product can be a smartphone app, an online education service, a banking advisory, or even a public welfare activity or policy design. Anything that systematically addresses a specific group's problems and creates value can be considered a product. Product Thinking is thus a mindset and ability set that penetrates superficial appearances, reaches the core of problems, and finds optimal solutions through structured, iterative approaches. It is not confined to the professional role of a product manager but is a mental model everyone should master to solve problems efficiently and create value.
So, what exactly is a product? What is product thinking? How do they fundamentally differ from the traditional notion of a "project"? And why has mastering this thinking become so crucial in today's world? This chapter, as the opening of the book, will clarify these basic concepts and reveal the core of product thinking's underlying logic—Systematic Problem-Solving. Through everyday cases within reach, combined with necessary theoretical frameworks and data insights, we will build a bridge from "daily experience" to "professional thinking" for you.

Today, in the digital economy, the形态 of products has undergone earth-shaking changes.
From a service perspective, a professional financial consultation, a smooth parcel delivery, and an immersive stage play are all products. They are intangible yet equally solve specific user problems—confusions in wealth management, needs for item delivery, and spiritual-cultural enjoyment.
From the digital realm, apps like WeChat, Taobao, and Douyin are the most representative products today. They use code as a carrier, satisfy people's social, shopping, and entertainment needs through interface interactions. Even a series of public account articles, an online course, or a paid knowledge community can be considered products as long as they are designed to continuously provide value to a specific user group.
Therefore, we can give a broader definition: A Product is any deliverable value carrier designed, developed, and continuously operated to satisfy the needs or solve the problems of a specific target audience in a specific scenario. It can be a physical object, a service, digital content, a system, an experience, or even a relationship or a consensus.
This definition contains several core elements: 1. User & Scenario: A product must target specific people (or organizations) and function in a particular context. Discussing a product without considering user and scenario is like shooting without a target. For example, the value of an umbrella is fully realized only in rainy scenarios. 2. Need & Problem: The starting point of a product is an unmet user need or an ongoing problem. Needs can be functional (e.g., reaching a destination quickly) or emotional (e.g., gaining a sense of security or belonging). 3. Value Carrier: The product is the medium of value. Users gain functional, emotional, or social value through using or consuming the product. Companies, in turn, gain commercial returns (revenue, growth) or social benefits by providing value. 4. Dynamic & Continuous: Modern products are not "items" delivered once and finished; they are "living entities" that require continuous operation and iterative optimization. From launch to retirement, a product evolves through interaction with users and the market.
Who are the real users? What is the core problem they are trying to solve? What is the context? How do we measure success? What are the trade-offs?
With this broad definition of a product in mind, let's look at Product Thinking. It is not a rigid operational process but a cognitive and decision-making framework centered on users, oriented toward problems, using systems thinking as a method, and data validation as a benchmark. People with product thinking instinctively ask questions when facing any complex task: Who are the real users? What is the core problem they are trying to solve? What is the context? How do we measure success? What are the trade-offs? This mindset shifts from "completing tasks" to "creating value" and elevates from "passive execution" to "active definition and exploration."

The underlying logic of product thinking can be summed up in one phrase: Systematic Problem-Solving. It is not linear thinking that addresses issues in isolation or treats symptoms without addressing root causes; instead, it examines problems within a larger, interconnected system, understands the dynamic relationships between elements, and finds leverage points for intervention.
A travel planner lacking product thinking might directly searc
