When we first step into a building, we often experience an ineffable feeling. This feeling might be a sense of solemnity, an urge to move forward, or a sudden moment of revelation. Such experiences are not coincidental but the result of careful design—every element of a building tells a story, guiding our perception and emotions. This perspective of viewing architecture as a narrative medium is precisely the core of architectural narratology.
Architectural Narratology is an interdisciplinary field that combines the theories of literary narratology with architectural space analysis to explore how architecture, like text, carries, transmits, and constructs meaning. Unlike traditional architectural form analysis or functional analysis, the narratological perspective focuses on the dynamic relationship between architecture and its users—how users enter spaces, experience sequences, interpret the "language" of buildings, and how architects use spatial organization to "tell stories."
The Ontological Foundation of Spatial Narrative
To understand spatial narrative, we must first answer a fundamental question: What makes architecture capable of narration? Or, how can space possess the ability to "tell stories"? The answer lies at the heart of architectural ontology—architecture is not merely inanimate material construction but a system of meaning, a medium for human-environment interaction.
From a phenomenological perspective, architectural space possesses the characteristic of embodiment. Our bodies are not neutral observers but are deeply embedded in space, experiencing it through movement, touch, sight, and breath. This embodied experience forms the foundation of spatial narrative—when we walk through a corridor, turn a corner, or push open a door, spatial changes trigger psychological and emotional responses, and these responses constitute the "grammar" of narrative.
The French philosopher Maurice Merleau-Ponty profoundly elaborated on the relationship between body and space in his work "Phenomenology of Perception." He argued that our understanding of the world is not an abstract cognitive activity but is achieved through the body's movement through the world. This perspective offers significant insights for understanding architectural narrative: architectural space is not an object to be observed from the outside but a place to be experienced from within. What architects design is not merely visible forms but walkable paths, perceptible rhythms, and comprehensible meanings.
Another important theoretical source for architectural narratology is semiotics. Semiotics studies how signs operate and generate meaning; introducing semiotics into architectural analysis means treating architectural elements as "signs"—they point beyond themselves, carrying cultural and meaningful codes. Leon Battista Alberti in the fifteenth century proposed that architecture, like speech (oratio), needs to follow grammatical rules to express ideas; this analogy has been deepened and expanded within contemporary semiotic frameworks.
The Three Elements of Narrative: Narrator, Medium, and Audience
Architectural narratology is built upon a clear analytical framework, borrowing the basic model from literary narratology, consisting of three core elements: the Narrator (who constructs the narrative), the Narrative Medium (through which the narrative is conveyed), and the Narrative Audience (who receives and interprets the narrative). Understanding the relationships among these three elements is key to mastering architectural narratology.
The narrator is the initiator and designer of the architectural narrative, typically including the architect and the client. In traditional architectural practice, the architect is the designer of form and space, responsible for transforming abstract concepts into concrete material forms; the client provides the project's basic framework—functional requirements, budget constraints, cultural expectations, etc. However, the narrator is not a single actor but the result of a complex negotiation process. A building is the product of dialogue between architect and client, architect and technical team, tradition and innovation.
Consider Louis Kahn's Salk Institute for Biological Studies (1965). The narrator is Kahn himself, but his design decisions were profoundly influenced by client Jonas Salk. Salk wished for this research institute to promote exchange and collaboration among scientists, a desire Kahn transformed into the building's core narrative—an open, solemn, contemplative spatial atmosphere. Kahn created an unforgettable central courtyard, its paving extending to the horizon of the Pacific Ocean, establishing dialogue between architecture and nature, science and the cosmos.
The narrative medium is the architectural space itself, encompassing all perceptible architectural elements: material forms, spatial sequences, material textures, and the use of light. Unlike the medium of literary narrative (words), the medium of architectural narrative is multidimensional, embodied, and inseparable from experience. A text can exist independently of its reader, whereas a space only truly "exists" when traversed and perceived by a body. This difference means that the "grammar" of architectural narrative is fundamentally different from literature—architecture "writes" using space, volume, light and shadow, and materials.
The narrative audience comprises the experiencers of architecture—users, viewers, pedestrians—those who interact with architectural space and derive meaning from it. Traditional architectural theory often treats users as passive receivers, but the narratological perspective emphasizes the audience's initiative. The same building may tell different stories to different experiencers; repeated visits to the same space may yield different interpretations depending on the experiencer's mood, knowledge, and experience. This audience initiative does not negate the architect's design intent but rather
